A New MystereBook: The Liquidator by John Gardner

New MystereBooks (Mystery eBooks)

Here is a mystery, suspense, or thriller ebook that we recently found by sleuthing (as it were) through new or recently reissued titles from independent publishers during November 2013 priced $4.99 or less …

The Liquidator by John Gardner was originally published in hardcover by Viking in June 1964, and is the first in the series of Boysie Oakes thrillers that were so successful they led to John Gardner being chosen to take over the James Bond franchise for books such as License to Kill and License Renewed. The book was made into a film of the same title in 1965 staring Rod Taylor.

For Officer Pete Murphy, K9 duty is as much a punishment as a promotion. When a shaky arrest reignites a recent scandal and triggers a multimillion-dollar lawsuit, all eyes are on Pete as the department braces for another media firestorm.

Meanwhile, Pete's eleven-year-old son Joel feels invisible. His parents hardly notice him — unless they're arguing about his “behavioral problems” — and his older sister, McKenna, has lately disappeared into the strange and frightening world of teenagerdom. About the only friend Joel has left is Butchie, his father's furry "partner".

When Joel and Butchie follow McKenna to a neighborhood bully's party, illegal activity kicks the dog's police training into overdrive, and soon the duo are on the run, navigating the streets of Chicago as they try to stay one step ahead of the bad guys — bad guys who may have a very personal interest in getting some payback on Officer Pete Murphy.

The Staff of Moses by Andrew Linke

The Staff of Moses
Andrew Linke
An Oliver Lucas Adventure
Publisher: Andrew Linke

Oliver Lucas is a professional tomb robber, though he prefers to think of himself as an adventure photographer and gentleman relic hunter. It has been a decade since his previous career fell to pieces in the wake of a discovery that led him to abandon academia and begin scouring the world for clues to an ancient conspiracy.

Now a powerful man wants Oliver to track down a relic from the pages of history: the staff Moses used to call down plagues, part the sea, and lead the Hebrews out of Egypt. Unfortunately, the scroll that points the way to this relic is in hands of a band of renegade military contractors, and the only connection Oliver has to them is through a disgraced Egyptian spymaster.

It's obvious to Oliver that he will need help to complete his quest, so he calls on Diana Jordan, an expert in ancient art and languages, and former lover, who works at the Louvre in Paris. She agrees to help him, despite their tangled history, because his mission unexpectedly dovetails with her own investigation into the origin of a mysterious mural in the museum's Egyptian wing. Together they set off for Egypt, prepared to track down the staff no matter who stands in their way.

It isn't long before Oliver and Diana find themselves in over their heads, confronting undead guardians, ancient cults, and the unleashed power of the staff itself.

A Laura Black Mystery
Publisher: B. A. Trimmer

Laura Black is an investigator for a highly successful Scottsdale law firm run by slightly shady Lenny Shapiro. She's hot on the trail of con-man Alexander Sternwood, the missing grandson of wealthy widow, Muffy Sternwood.

It sounded like an easy case, at least until she was kidnapped by a couple of upset Russian hit-men named Boris and Ivan, then by two seriously psychotic brothers called Smith and Jones, then finally by Tough Tony DiCenzo, head of the largest crime family in Scottsdale. To top it off, she's found a dead body that seems to be a message directed toward her.

Now, with the help of ex-cop Gina Rondinelli, a stripper named Danica, and her best friend Sophie, they need to make sure that a slightly illegal international jewel sale goes smoothly, or else.

All of this pales in comparison, though, with an even greater danger. Laura has decided that now would be the perfect time to get back together with her old boyfriend Jackson Reno, who just happens to be a Scottsdale detective. The only hitch in her plans for romance is Maximilian, a gorgeous crime lieutenant who has his sights set on Laura, a feeling that she can't help but return.

Craziness, romance, and more than a little danger are in store when Laura Black and her Scottsdale friends are on the case!
