Cinemystery: Production Update on Adaptation of Linwood Barclay's Trust Your Eyes

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

A couple of months ago we reported that Linwood Barclay's stand-alone thriller Trust Your Eyes had been optioned by Warner Bros. for film.

Now we're learning that Halo: Reach writer Peter O'Brien will pen the screenplay for Todd Phillips to direct.

The publisher calls the book "a thrilling story in which two brothers suddenly find themselves pulled into a frightening vortex of power and murder", a storyline that some reviewers have called an updated twist on Hitchcock's classic film Rear Window, itself based on the 1942 short story "It Had To Be Murder" by Cornell Woolrich. Learn more about the book, below.

Telemystery: ABC Family Adapting Barry Lyga's I Hunt Killers for Drama Series

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

ABC Family is developing a television series adaptation of Barry Lyga's young adult novel I Hunt Killers. Akira Mittman (Dexter) will write the screenplay, which (as Deadline wryly points out) is appropriate given that the novel has a similar Dexter-esque twist to it … albeit at a teenaged level.

Lyga has written a sequel to the book, Game, which will be published next Spring by Little, Brown.

Review: Princess Elizabeth's Spy by Susan Elia MacNeal

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Princess Elizabeth's Spy by Susan Elia MacNeal. A Maggie Hope Mystery.

Review summary: This historical mystery is a fascinating look at behind-the-scenes London during the early years of World War II. The story itself is extraordinary but it is Maggie Hope herself that is the star of this show, a smart, strong-willed woman determined to help her country in whatever way she can. The series is being fast-tracked and is expected to premiere in Summer 2013.

MystereBooks: The Messenger of Athens by Anne Zouroudi

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense and Thriller eBooks

Every Saturday we publish an updated list of Kindle mysteries priced $2.99 or less. And we usually do a quick check mid-week as well, to see if any titles have received new discounts from the publisher … or to see what we may have missed from our previous check.

This is one of the latter situations. Indeed, it looks like this title — The Messenger of Athens, the first Hermes Diaktoros mystery by Anne Zouroudi — was discounted some time ago by the publisher to $2.99 and we quite simply missed it. So, rather than wait until Saturday, we thought we'd mention it today.

The author originally conceived "The Mysteries of the Greek Detective" as a series of seven novels, each based on one of the Deadly Sins. (Six have been published to date, though only the first three are available here in the US.) The Messenger of Athens, the first in the series, has at its core the sin of lust. Read more about the book, below, together with purchase options.

MystereBooks: Out-of-Print Crime Fiction, New in eBooks from Bloomsbury

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Bloomsbury has lowered the price on a large number of long out-of-print crime fiction recently re-released as ebooks to just $1.99.

Authors represented include Jane Aiken Hodge, Nicholas Blake — the pen name used by Cecil Day-Lewis for his mystery novels, Edmund Crispin — the pseudonym under which Robert Bruce Montgomery wrote crime novels, Margery Allingham, H. R. F. Keating, and more.

Use this link to see just those Kindle ebooks classified by Amazon as "mystery". Use this more general link to see all "genre" books (as some are clearly crossover titles).

These are almost certainly temporary price reductions, so if any of these authors are of interest to you, we urge you to check out the selection of $1.99 titles soon!

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

FX Networks announced today that the fourth season of Justified would premiere on Tuesday, January 8th, 2012 at 10 PM ET/PT.

Last season, Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) faced off against dirty politics, hidden fortunes, a mysterious criminal ringleader named Limehouse, and Quarles, an ambitious gangster from the underbelly of Motor City. This season, Raylan will start to pick at the thread of a cold case over 30 years in the making, unraveling a riddle that echoes all the way back to his boyhood and his criminal father's bad dealings. Meanwhile, Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins) finds his grip on Harlan loosening due to a Pentecostal preacher with a penchant for theatrics and a knack for manipulation to rival his own.

Justified is based on a character created by crime novelist Elmore Leonard.

We're providing a list of all books below, sorted by author, with a synopsis from one of each.

Telemystery: Two More Jeffrey Archer Novels to be Adapted for Television

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Earlier this year we reported that Jeffrey Archer's 2006 stand-alone crime thriller False Impression was being adapted for film. Now we're learning that New Franchise, which owns the rights to the book, is leaning towards developing a television drama to take advantage of the multiple and intersecting character-driven storylines. (More details on the book, below.)

New Franchise is also looking to adapt the second "Kane and Abel" novel by Archer as a series as well. Published in 1982, The Prodigal Daughter follows a multi-generational family feud involving power and politics.

Neither adaptation is as yet associated with a network.

These projects are separate from another from NBC. The network is adapting the author's 1998 political thriller The Eleventh Commandment, which is in the pilot script stage.

Cinemystery: DreamWorks to Option Film Rights to The Light Between Oceans

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

The film rights to M. L. Stedman's debut psychological novel of suspense — and long-running bestseller — The Light Between Oceans is expected to be won by DreamWorks.

"I was deeply affected by M. L. Stedman's powerful and primal story of human choices and their consequences," said David Heyman, who will produce the film. "It's a novel which tackles grand emotions, but everything is rooted within an intimate yet universal story of marital and parental love."

Set on a remote island off the coast of Australia after the end of World War I, the storyline follows a couple, who find a baby adrift and decide to raise the little girl as their own. (More about the book, below.)

Telemystery: Sherlock Season 3 Production Delayed

Telemystery Prime Time Crime: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the production schedule for the third season of Sherlock has slipped from January to March, suggesting that the earliest the new episodes would air is late Fall 2013 on BBC … and early 2014 here in the US.

Series co-creator Steven Moffat hinted at the three storylines of the new season back in August with these three words: "Rat. Wedding. Bow." However, co-creator Mark Gatiss has already announced that the first episode of Season 3 would be loosely based on "The Adventure of the Empty House", the first story by Arthur Conan Doyle set after Holmes's "death" at the Reichenbach Falls. There is no obvious connection between the three teaser words and this story.
