Alex sets out to convince Mr. and Mrs. Swope — only to find that the parents have left the hospital and taken their son with them. Worse, the sleazy motel room where the Swopes were staying is empty — except for the ominous bloodstain. The Swopes and their son have vanished into the sordid shadows of the city.

Now Alex and his friend, homicide detective Milo Sturgis, have no choice but to push the law to the breaking point. They've entered an amoral underworld where drugs, dreams, and sex are all for sale … where fantasies are fulfilled at any price — even at the cost of a young boy's life.

Summer, 1546. King Henry VIII is slowly, painfully dying. His Protestant and Catholic councilors are engaged in a final and decisive power struggle; whoever wins will control the government. As heretics are hunted across London, and radical Protestants are burned at the stake, the Catholic party focuses its attack on Henry's sixth wife — and Matthew Shardlake's old mentor — Queen Catherine Parr.

Shardlake, still haunted by his narrow escape from death the year before, steps into action when the beleaguered and desperate Queen summons him to Whitehall Palace to help her recover a dangerous manuscript. The Queen has authored a confessional book, Lamentation of a Sinner, so radically Protestant that if it came to the King's attention it could bring both her and her sympathizers crashing down. Although the secret book was kept hidden inside a locked chest in the Queen's private chamber, it has inexplicably vanished. Only one page has been recovered — clutched in the hand of a murdered London printer.

Shardlake's investigations take him on a trail that begins among the backstreet printshops of London, but leads him and his trusty assistant Jack Barak into the dark and labyrinthine world of court politics, a world Shardlake swore never to enter again. In this crucible of power and ambition, Protestant friends can be as dangerous as Catholic enemies, and those with shifting allegiances can be the most dangerous of all.

Trust and feelings have no place in her work, or in her life. And yet there's no denying Jace is a distraction. When an elderly World War II veteran shows up unannounced at Brodie Security begging for protection, the staff thinks he's just a paranoid old man. He offers up a story connected to the war and to Chinese Triads operating in present-day Tokyo, insisting that he and his few surviving army buddies are in danger.

Fresh off his involvement in solving San Francisco's Japantown murders, antiques dealer Jim Brodie had returned to Tokyo for some R&R, and to hunt down a rare ink painting by the legendary Japanese Zen master Sengai for one of his clients — not to take on another case with his late father's P.I. firm. But out of respect for the old soldier, Brodie agrees to provide a security detail, thinking it'll be an easy job and end when the man comes to his senses.

Instead, an unexpected, brutal murder rocks Brodie and his crew, sending them deep into the realm of the Triads, Chinese spies, kendo warriors, and an elusive group of killers whose treachery spans centuries — and who will stop at nothing to complete their mission.

Please Welcome Mystery Author JoAnne Myers

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by JoAnne Myers
with JoAnne Myers

We are delighted to welcome back author JoAnne Myers to Omnimystery News.

Last fall JoAnne published a collection of four novellas in Flagitious (Melange Books; September 2014 trade paperback and ebook formats) and in her guest post for us today she relates the facts about lycanthropes, more commonly known as werewolves.

The study of lycanthropy, derived from the Greek word for "lycan" meaning wolf, and "thrope" meaning man, is a rare condition in which a person has an uncontrollable desire to eat human flesh, or drink human blood. It is vastly scrutinized by psychiatrists.

That was not the case for my hero Detective Nick Difozzio, in "The Tarot Card Murders", one tale in my crime/mystery collection, Flagitious. When young and virginal homicide victims turn up with human bite marks and drained of blood, this ex-Navy man knew he had a gang of lycanthropes in his town.

The perception of a link between mental illness and animalistic behavior has been traced throughout the history of folklore from many different countries.

Centuries ago, persons exhibiting bizarre symptoms were written off as the afflicted being melancholy. Nowadays, some doctors refer to Clinical lycanthropy as a psychotic episode caused by another condition such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or clinical depression.

In "The Tarot Card Murders," Nick is on his own to prove this murderous gang exists. When the Chief of Police, orders him off the case, Nick is left with only his courage, wits, determination and a Voodoo Priestess, to solve these bizarre murders, and save his citizens.

Documented cases of lycanthrope include the afflicted suffering from the same four symptoms; delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech and behavior, such as barking or howling, walking on all fours, and scratching furniture.

In "The Tarot Card Murders", the gang members are connected by their birthdates, of August 24. The birthstone peridot, and the horoscope sign Virgo. Members are kept in line with monetary rewards, intimidation, and threats of death, from the gangs Alfa male and female. The more Nick uncovers, the more personal and dangerous this case becomes.

If you enjoy reading about lust, lies and deceit, you will love "The Tarot Card Murders".

After exposing the killer, Katherine's life is turned upside down and she finds herself fighting for her life. Review: Deadline by John Sandford

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Deadline by John Sandford. A Virgil Flowers Mystery.

Review summary: On balance, this is an enjoyable entry in this series, but editing out one of the subplots, which is completely superfluous, and smoothing out the pacing over the other two, would have made this already good book a far better one. (Click here for text of full review.)

A Virgil Flowers Mystery

Publisher synopsis: In Southeast Minnesota, down on the Mississippi, a school board meeting is coming to an end. The board chairman announces that the rest of the meeting will be closed, due to personnel issues. "Issues" is correct. The proposal up for a vote before them is whether to authorize the killing of a local reporter. The vote is four to one in favor.

Meanwhile, not far away, Virgil Flowers is helping out a friend by looking into a dognapping, which seems to be turning into something much bigger and uglier — a team of dognappers supplying medical labs — when he gets a call from Lucas Davenport. A murdered body has been found — and the victim is a local reporter …
