Telemystery: The Killing, Season Two, Premieres Sunday April 1st on AMC

The Killing Season 2 (AMC)

Tomorrow, Sunday April 1st, the second season of The Killing premieres on AMC with a two-hour episode starting at 8 PM (ET/PT).

Of course we all know that last season ended without a resolution to the only question asked by everyone all season, Who Killed Rosie Larson? And we all know based on all the pre-season publicity that the answer won't be coming until the final episode of this second season. Which almost begs the question, why bother tuning in until the season finale?

Still, for those who may be interested, in the aftermath of the shooting at City Hall and Linden's discovery that the photo leading to Councilman Darren Richmond's arrest was forged, Sarah returns to Seattle to investigate a possible cover up and wonders if she can trust her partner.

Get a 3-plus minute summary of the first season and a brief preview of this season below.

Production Underway for Film Adaptation of A Single Shot by Matthew F. Jones

A Single Shot by Matthew F. Jones

Here's some news that surprised us a bit. Production has begun on the film adaptation of Matthew F. Jones's thriller A Single Shot. The news itself isn't surprising, just the timing.

We first heard about the adaptation in 2010, and then there was a news items from mid-2011 that production had begun in Vancouver. But apparently that was a false start.

Jones has adapted his own book for the film screenplay, which is being directed by David M. Rosenthal. A Single Shot was originally published in 1996 by Farrar Straus & Giroux and recently reissued by Mulholland Books. Here's the synopsis from the book:

After the loss of his family farm, John Moon is a desperate man. A master hunter, his ability to poach game in-season or out is the only thing that stands between him and the soup kitchen line. Until Moon trespasses on the wrong land, hears a rustle in the brush, and fires a single fateful shot.

Following the bloody trail, he comes upon a shocking scene: an illegal, deep woods campground filled with drugs, bundles of cash and the body of a dead young woman, killed by Moon's stray bullet.

Faced with an ultimate dilemma, Moon has to make a choice: does he take the money and ignore his responsibility for the girl's death? Or confess?

But before he has a chance to decide, Moon finds himself on the run, pursued by those who think the money is theirs. Men who don't care about right and wrong and who want only one thing from John Moon: his body, face down in a ditch
.

Starring Sam Rockwell as John Moon and co-starring Jason Isaacs and Willilam H. Macy, the film is expected to be released during 2013.

Anathem by Neal Stephenson

Anathem by Neal Stephenson
Publisher: HarperCollins

This long — very long at almost 1000 pages — novel defies simple categorization, but is possibly best described as a near-future thriller.

About Anathem (from the publisher): Fraa Erasmas is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting influences of the outside "saecular" world by ancient stone, honored traditions, and complex rituals. Over the centuries, cities and governments have risen and fallen beyond the concent's walls. Three times during history's darkest epochs violence born of superstition and ignorance has invaded and devastated the cloistered mathic community. Yet the avout have always managed to adapt in the wake of catastrophe, becoming out of necessity even more austere and less dependent on technology and material things. And Erasmas has no fear of the outside — the Extramuros — for the last of the terrible times was long, long ago.

Now, in celebration of the week-long, once-in-a-decade rite of Apert, the fraas and suurs prepare to venture beyond the concent's gates — at the same time opening them wide to welcome the curious "extras" in. During his first Apert as a fraa, Erasmas eagerly anticipates reconnecting with the landmarks and family he hasn't seen since he was "collected." But before the week is out, both the existence he abandoned and the one he embraced will stand poised on the brink of cataclysmic change.

Powerful unforeseen forces jeopardize the peaceful stability of mathic life and the established ennui of the Extramuros — a threat that only an unsteady alliance of saecular and avout can oppose — as, one by one, Erasmas and his colleagues, teachers, and friends are summoned forth from the safety of the concent in hopes of warding off global disaster. Suddenly burdened with a staggering responsibility, Erasmas finds himself a major player in a drama that will determine the future of his world — as he sets out on an extraordinary odyssey that will carry him to the most dangerous, inhospitable corners of the planet … and beyond.

Paramount Options Film Rights to French Thriller Syndrome E by Franck Thilliez

Le Syndrome E by Franck Thilliez

Paramount has acquired the film rights to the French thriller Syndrome E by Franck Thilliez. This first in a series was originally published in late 2010 in France, and has its US debut in August — the first of the crime novelist's works to be translated into English.

The story is of beleaguered detective Lucie Hennebelle, whose old friend has developed a case of spontaneous blindness after watching an extremely rare — and violent — film from the 1950s. Embedded in the film are subliminal images so unspeakably heinous that Lucie realizes she must get to the bottom of it — especially when nearly everyone who comes into contact with the film starts turning up dead.

Enlisting the help of Inspector Franck Sharko — a brooding, broken analyst for the Paris police who is exploring the film's connection to five murdered men left in the woods — Lucie begins to strip away the layers of what is perhaps the most disturbing and powerful film ever made. Soon Sharko and Lucie find themselves mired in a darkness that spreads across politics, religion, science, and art while stretching from France to Canada, Egypt to Rwanda, and beyond. And just who is responsible for this darkness will blow readers minds, as Syndrome E forces them to consider: what if the earliest and most brilliant advances and discoveries of neuroscience were not used for good — but for evil.

New Book Trailer for Unholy Night by Seth Grahame-Smith

Unholy Night by Seth Grahame-Smith

Seth Grahame-Smith has been in the news a lot lately, what with two movies coming out for which he wrote the screenplays — Dark Shadows and an adaptation of his own novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter — and he has a new book, a biblical thriller, being published in April, Unholy Night. The publisher, Hachette Book Group, has now uploaded a trailer, which we've embedded below. Word of caution: it's not for the faint of heart.

They're an iconic part of history's most celebrated birth. But what do we really know about the Three Kings of the Nativity, besides the fact that they followed a star to Bethlehem bearing strange gifts? The Bible has little to say about this enigmatic trio.

In this new telling of the story, the so-called "Three Wise Men" are infamous thieves, led by the dark, murderous Balthazar. After a daring escape from Herod's prison, they stumble upon the famous manger and its newborn king. The last thing Balthazar needs is to be slowed down by young Joseph, Mary and their infant. But when Herod's men begin to slaughter the first born in Judea, he has no choice but to help them escape to Egypt.

It's the beginning of an adventure that will see them fight the last magical creatures of the Old Testament; cross paths with biblical figures like Pontius Pilate and John the Baptist; and finally deliver them to Egypt. It may just be the greatest story never told.

Elegy for Eddie by Jacqueline Winspear

Four places lower at number 10 is the 9th Maisie Dobbs mystery, Elegy for Eddie by Jacqueline Winspear.

Early April 1933. To the costermongers of Covent Garden — sellers of fruit and vegetables on the streets of London — Eddie Pettit was a gentle soul with a near-magical gift for working with horses. When Eddie is killed in a violent accident, the grieving costers are deeply skeptical about the cause of his death. Who would want to kill Eddie — and why?

Maisie Dobbs' father, Frankie, had been a costermonger, so she had known the men since childhood. She remembers Eddie fondly and is determined to offer her help. But it soon becomes clear that powerful political and financial forces are equally determined to prevent her from learning the truth behind Eddie's death.

Plunging into the investigation, Maisie begins her search for answers on the working-class streets of Lambeth where Eddie had lived and where she had grown up. The inquiry quickly leads her to a callous press baron; a has-been politician named Winston Churchill, lingering in the hinterlands of power; and, most surprisingly, to Douglas Partridge, the husband of her dearest friend, Priscilla.

As Maisie uncovers lies and manipulation on a national scale, she must decide whether to risk it all to see justice done.

One-Sheet Poster, Viral Website for Total Recall

Total Recall (2012)

It's been a busy week for Total Recall. First there was the trailer for the trailer. Then there was the banner poster. Then the motion banner poster. And now today, the standard one-sheet poster (right; click for slightly larger version). The poster's tagline: "What is real?"

And there's more!

Sony has a new viral website, separate from the film's website, that offers you the opportunity to "escape from your world to ours. Come to Rekall for the memory of a lifetime." Enter your phone number and a Rekall representative will contact you when experience packages are available. (It doesn't seem to be much more than that for now.)

In the meantime, welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life — real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police — controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world — Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

Directed by Len Wiseman from a screenplay adaptation of Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Mark Bomback and Kurt Wimmer, Total Recall opens in theaters August 3rd, 2012.
