A Body in the Backyard
Elizabeth Spann Craig
A Myrtle Clover Mystery
Publisher: Elizabeth Spann Craig

It's just an ordinary day for octogenarian sleuth Myrtle Clover — until her yardman discovers a dead body planted in her backyard. This death isn't cut and dried — the victim was bashed in the head with one of Myrtle's garden gnomes.

Myrtle's friend Miles recognizes the body and identifies him as Charles Clayborne … reluctantly admitting he's a cousin. Charles wasn't the sort of relative you bragged about — he was a garden variety sleaze, which is very likely why he ended up murdered. As Myrtle starts digging up dirt to nip the killings in the bud, someone's focused on scaring her off the case. Myrtle vows to find the murderer … before she's pushing up daisies, herself.

To become part of the Nero Wolfe legend, Archie Goodwin must prove his worth …

Archie Goodwin comes to New York City hoping for a bit of excitement. In his third week working as a night watchman, he stops two burglars in their tracks — with a pair of hot lead slugs. But it’s the kidnapping of Tommie Williamson, the son of a New York hotel magnate, that introduces Goodwin to the man who will change his life.

Young Tommie has gone missing, and only one detective is built for the job: Nero Wolfe, the heavyset genius of West Thirty-Fifth Street. Together they will form one of the most unlikely crime fighting duos in history — but first Goodwin must find Tommie Williamson, and prove to Wolfe that he deserves a place by his side.

Telemystery: Norwegian Television Planning a Mini-Series based on an Original Concept by Crime Novelist Jo Nesbø

Telemystery Prime Time Crime: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Norwegian public television broadcaster NRK has commissioned production company Yellow Bird to develop a 8-part mini-series based on an original concept by crime novelist Jo Nesbø.

Titled Occupied, the storyline is set in the near future and is centered on the invasion of Norway by Russia to secure its oil fields after an international crisis results in a global oil shortage.

"This is a brilliant idea by Jo Nesbø with so many possibilities," said Yellow Bird's Marianne Gray.

Separately, Gray intimated that the production company is also considering a television adaptation of Nesbø's thriller Headhunters, which was adapted into a theatrical film that was released in 2011. Summit Entertainment currently holds the English-language rights, and is planning a remake of the film.

Broken City

Broken City (2013)

Directed by Allen Hughes from an original screenplay by Brian Tucker. Watch a trailer for the film below.

Film Synopsis (from the studio): Mark Wahlberg stars as Billy Taggart, a New York City private eye struggling to get his deadbeat clients to pay when he gets a call from Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe). His honor remembers Billy from seven years ago when, as a cop, the young man shot a rapist who had been exonerated on a technicality. Back then, the Mayor told Billy he was a hero, but Billy was still forced off the job due to the public outcry and some incriminating evidence that never saw the light of day.

Now the mayor needs someone he can trust to find out if his wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is having an affair — a fact that could cause him considerable trouble seeing as Election Day is just a week away. As Billy digs for the truth, he uncovers layers of political corruption, and discovers he himself is nothing more than a pawn in a much bigger game.

Running time: 109 minutes. Rating: Rated R for pervasive language, some sexual content and violence.

Publisher: Atria Books

Read our review of A Fistful of Collars by Spencer Quinn

Hoping to bring some Tinseltown money to the Valley, the mayor lures a movie studio to town to shoot their next production, a big-budget Western in the classic tradition. The star is none other than ruggedly handsome — and notoriously badly behaved — Thad Perry. When the mayor decides that someone needs to keep an eye on Thad so that he doesn't get into too much trouble, Bernie and Chet are handpicked for the job. The money is good but something smells fishy, and what should have been a simple matter of babysitting soon gets more complicated — especially when they discover that Thad has a mysterious connection to the Valley that nobody wants to talk about. What kind of secret could Thad have left behind when he went to Hollywood to seek fame and fortune? The only people who might know the answer have a bad habit of turning up dead before they can talk.

As Bernie's relationship with his longtime girlfriend Suzie goes long-distance, and Chet's late-night assignations appear to have resulted in an unexpected dividend, it's all our two sleuths can do to keep Thad and his motley entourage of yes-men, handlers, and hangers-on in their sights. Worst of all, Thad is a self-proclaimed cat person, and his feline friend Brando has taken an instant dislike to Chet.

An Allegra Fairweather Mystery

Just another typical week in the life of a paranormal investigator.

I had barely arrived in Ireland to investigate a pooka terrorizing the villagers of Dingaleen when I got called to ride the fairy horse myself. When a pooka calls, you answer — and hold on for dear life.

Unfortunately, the beast tossed me into a bog. Fortunately, my gorgeous guardian angel fished me out. Just barely.

You see, Casper is still weak from tangling with an evil spirit on our last case. So he's not even much help to me in the land o' the green. The powers-that-be are even hinting at retirement …

But I won't lose Casper. Not now. Not ever. As luck would have it, I have a chance, albeit a slim one, to save him and get the answers I need to solve the pooka case — if I just take a wee trip through Fairyland. Except angels aren't welcome there, humans can't eat, drink or sleep there, and time is running out.
