Review: Luther: The Calling by Neil Cross

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Luther: The Calling by Neil Cross. A John Luther Mystery.

Review summary: There is a very visual feel to this police procedural-style thriller, which is not surprising given the author's close association with the television series from which this book is derived. The narrative is crisp and descriptive, the dialog rings true. But there's also a rough edge to it. Readers should be advised that this is a very graphic, very violent, indeed very troubling crime novel. (Click here for text of full review.)

This is, putting it as gently as I possibly can, a terrible movie. The acting isn't bad; no, the fault lies partly with the screenwriters for putting so little effort into writing a coherent storyline and arrogantly assuming viewers would simply buy in to it; and more so with the director, who seems to be applying what he's learned from reading chapters in an introduction to directing-style book while filming the script.

Review: Syndrome E by Franck Thilliez

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Syndrome E by Franck Thilliez.

Review summary: This is a fast-paced thriller but a lengthy and rather complicated one all the same. (Some of the subject matter is based on historical fact.) The title refers to a "violent mental contamination starting from a catalyst … a rare, random phenomenon that can strike anywhere, at any time" … and what makes it all the more unsettling to the reader is that it can also strike anyone. MystereBooks: This Week's Update of Kindle Crime Fiction Priced $2.99 or Less

MystereBooks: Mystery, Suspense, and Thriller eBooks

Every month Amazon publishes a list of 100 Kindle books priced $3.99 or less. We thought we'd take that idea and improve on it, publishing a list of 100 Kindle mystery books priced $2.99 or less and updating it every week!

Here is our general criteria for selecting titles to include: books from major or specialty publishers of crime fiction and those written by authors familiar to us. There are far more than 100 to choose from, so we use our best judgment to narrow it down.

And just a reminder … as we add new titles, older ones are removed from the list. These books aren't likely to be repeated, so we encourage you to check in frequently!

Just a couple of notes before we get started …

• Amazon announced a new list of titles for November 2012 this past week. We posted the list of mystery and suspense books on Thursday and have not repeated any of these titles in our own update today.

Perservance Press discounted several of its titles this week to $2.99. We've read most of these and enthusiastically recommend them.
