When Private Eye John Denson is sent to the town of Sixkiller, Washington, it seems to be a straight-forward investigation. The Harkenriders have been found with fifty marijuana plants on their property, and they claim they have no idea how they got there.
John's attention is momentarily distracted from his investigation, however, when he meets the beautiful ornithologist Jenny MacIvar on his drive into Sixkiller. She's there to perform a controversial endangered owl count, one which sets out to prove that the surrounding forests should be protected from the logging which employs many of the locals. Jenny's also on the trail of an owl killer, determined to find out who wrung the endangered creature's neck, and why. John finds himself in the midst of a turf war between the loggers and the environmentalists, and things are rapidly getting nasty.
When Jenny's body turns up in the river, a shotgun-hole through her chest, John suspects there's more to her apparently senseless murder than meets the eye. Could the Harkenrider case, the MacIvar murder and the strange killing of an endangered owl all somehow be linked? And can John find out what — or who — is at the root of Sixkiller's troubles before anyone else gets hurt?
