Universal Studios has officially optioned the "Locke & Key" series of graphic novels by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez for film. (More about the first book in the series, below.) The news isn't completely unexpected; last November co-producer Roberto Orci seemed to confirm the studio's option in a tweet. (Orci is expected to co-write the screenplay with Alex Kurtzman.)
An adaptation of the series has been in various stages of development for some time now, with Fox ordering a pilot for a television series several years ago (also co-written and co-produced by Orci and Kurtzman).
The first issue of "Locke & Key" was published in 2008, with the overall story arc structured to unfold in three "acts", and each act consisting of two 6-part storylines. The authors are currently writing the final storyline of the final act, with the series drawing to a close later this year.
