In the dead of a Michigan winter, pieces of a snowmobile wash up near the crumbling, small town of Starvation Lake — the same snowmobile that went down with Starvation's legendary hockey coach years earlier. But everybody knows Coach Blackburn's accident happened five miles away on a different lake. As rumors buzz about mysterious underground tunnels, the evidence from the snowmobile says one thing: murder.

Gus Carpenter, editor of the local newspaper, has recently returned to Starvation after a failed attempt to make it big at the Detroit Times. In his youth, Gus was the goalie who let a state championship get away, crushing Coach's dreams and earning the town's enmity. Now he's investigating the murder of his former coach. But even more unsettling to Gus are the holes in the town's past and the gnawing suspicion that those holes may conceal some dark and disturbing secrets secrets that some of the people closest to him may have killed to keep.

A Test of Wills by Charles Todd

A Test of Wills by Charles Todd
An Ian Rutledge Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: HarperCollins

In 1914, Ian Rutledge left a brilliant career at Scotland Yard to fight in the Great War. Now, in 1919, he is back, burdened with a heavy secret: he is still suffering from shell shock. With him almost constantly is the cynical, taunting voice of the young Scots soldier he was forced to have executed on the battlefield for refusing to fight.

In a desperate gamble to salvage his sanity, Rutledge takes up his duties at Scotland Yard. But a colleague, jealous of Rutledge's pre-war successes, has learned his secret and maneuvers to have him assigned to a case that promises to spell disaster no matter what the outcome. In a Warwickshire village, a popular retired military officer has been murdered, and the chief suspect is, unhappily for the Inspector, a much-decorated war hero and a friend of the Prince of Wales.

Rutledge, fighting his malady and the tormentor in his head (who is the personification of his own doubts and guilt), doggedly goes about his investigation. He digs into the lives of the villagers: the victim's ward, a young woman now engaged to the chief suspect; a local artist shunned because of her love for a German prisoner; the reclusive cousins whose cottage adjoins the dead man's estate. But the witness who might be able to tell him the most is a war-ravaged ex-soldier who chills Rutledge with the realization that if he loses control of himself, he could become this man.

The Return of Captain John Emmett by Elizabeth Speller
A Laurence Bartram Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Read our review of The Return of Captain John Emmett by Elizabeth Speller

London, 1920. In the aftermath of the Great War and a devastating family tragedy, Laurence Bartram has turned his back on the world. But with a well-timed letter, an old flame manages to draw him back in. Mary Emmett's brother John — like Laurence, an officer during the war — has apparently killed himself while in the care of a remote veterans' hospital, and Mary needs to know why.

Aided by his friend Charles — a dauntless gentleman with detective skills cadged from mystery novels — Laurence begins asking difficult questions. What connects a group of war poets, a bitter feud within Emmett's regiment, and a hidden love affair? Was Emmett's death really a suicide, or the missing piece in a puzzling series of murders? As veterans tied to Emmett continue to turn up dead, and Laurence is forced to face the darkest corners of his own war experiences, his own survival may depend on uncovering the truth.

Dead Man's Gun: Season One

Dead Man's Gun
Season One

This Showtime original series, narrated by Kris Kristofferson, aired for two seasons.

Set in the mythic old West, this first complete season uncovers the legend of a dead man's gun that grants whoever possesses it unforeseen powers, with usually dangerous results. As the pistol passes from person to person, the lives of those who possess it are forever transformed.

Also be released this week, the second and final season of the series. In the ultimate episode, "A Just Reward", the origin of the gun is revealed.

Dirk Gently: The Complete Series

Dirk Gently
The Complete Series

Meet Dirk Gently. He's poorly dressed, perpetually insolvent … and uncommonly good at solving mysteries.

As proprietor of the Holistic Detective Agency, Dirk follows methods that are, in his own words, based on an almost unswerving belief in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. Affably played by Stephen Mangan, Dirk is aided and frequently irritated by his hapless assistant, Richard MacDuff (Darren Boyd). Together, they tackle cases ranging from a missing cat to a murder that may involve the Pentagon.

Based on the novels by Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy), Dirk Gently follows the detective as he spins coincidences into explanations for seemingly unsolvable mysteries. Although he's regarded as a mere con man by some, Dirk often delivers astonishing results with his unusual tactics.

Highway Patrol: Season Two

Highway Patrol
Season Two

Packed with fast motorcycles, powerful patrol cars, helicopters and two-way radios, this syndicated crime drama from the late 1950s screamed onto the scene destined to be one of the most popular television series of all time.

Starring Broderick Crawford as Dan Mathews, the head of a police force in an unidentified Western US state (though clearly set in California), this action packed show filled with harrowing roadway adventures sped its way from the TV screen into pop culture with the catch phrase "10-4".

The Killing: Season Two

The Killing
Season Two

After failing to close the case on "Who Killed Rosie Larson?" in the first season of this murder mystery, a poorly thought-out tactic which nearly cost this series its entire viewership, homicide detectives Sarah Linden and Stephen Holder resume their investigation into murder of a Seattle teenager, only to discover it may be part of a larger, more explosive conspiracy. As the case unfolds, it triggers shocking revelations and stunning twists that will keep you guessing until the riveting season conclusion … when the killer of Rosie Larsen will finally — finally — be revealed.

Based on the Danish television series Forbrydelsen, this season aired on AMC during late Spring 2012. The series was canceled (not surprisingly) by the network, but a complicated arrangement with NetFlix has resulted in an agreement for a third season, which premieres June 2nd, 2013 on AMC.
