Bitter End by Chrstine Kling

Bitter End by Chrstine Kling
A Seychelle Sulllivan Mystery
Publisher: Tell-Tale Press

This is the third mystery, of four published to date, featuring the Ft. Lauderdale tugboat operator.

About Bitter End (from the publisher): Since kindergarten, Seychelle and her best friend, Molly, had been as close as sisters. Molly even dated Seychelle’s brother. But it all ended suddenly when Nick Pontus, a slick, older, up-and-coming entrepreneur, came along. A smitten Molly quit school, married her new beau, and never spoke to Seychelle again. After thirteen years, it still stings.

Seychelle didn’t see the sniper who picked Nick off at the helm of his yacht, but she knows that there are plenty of people in South Florida who wanted to see the gambling-boat tycoon dead: the Russian mobsters looking for a piece of his casino action, the Indian gamers who resent his competition, and the ecological activists fighting his plans to develop Fort Lauderdale’s waterfront. But it’s Molly whom the cops zero in on. And despite her bitter feelings and against her better judgment, when her back-from-the-blue friend asks for help, Seychelle can’t just weigh anchor and cruise. She’s got to dive in.

What she finds is a money-skimming scam aboard Nick’s flagship gambling boat, Nick’s new trophy wife turned merry rich widow, and Nick and Molly’s teenage son, a scared kid with a big secret … and a killer on his trail. Protecting the boy, proving Molly’s innocence, and navigating between squalls of gunfire add up to a tall order as salvage jobs go. But like any good captain, Seychelle will never abandon ship. Even if it means risking her life.

Dead but Not Buried by Iain North
Publisher: Amenta Publishing

About Dead but Not Buried (from the publisher): A student is found dead in the Scottish Highlands. Journalist Jim Buchan cuts short his holiday to investigate. He can’t afford not to. His career has been on a downward spiral ever since his nervous breakdown.

The following day the charred remains of a man are discovered in a burned out caravan. In both cases, the evidence points to a teenage runaway fleeing an abusive uncle. When she dies in a road accident, Jim wraps up his front page scoop and prepares to return to his holiday.

But another brutal murder forces him to reassess his original theory. It has all the hallmarks of a revenge killing. But Jim is not convinced and the discovery of an unlicensed drug takes his investigation in a whole new direction.

With his marriage on the rocks and a rebellious teenage daughter to contend with, Jim seeks solace in the arms of a much younger female journalist. But rather than offer him a shoulder to cry on, she forces him face up to some uncomfortable home truths about his own desires.

Drawn into a web of exploitation, manipulation and greed, by those closest to their victims and by others who should be beyond reproach, Jim discovers that it is only a matter of time before secrets long buried start to resurface.

Publisher: Bramagioia Enterprises

About Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes (from the publisher): For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. She's had plenty of visions, usually boring ones like someone's toilet's overflowed, but she's never seen one of herself before. Rose realizes she's wasted twenty-four years of living and makes a list on the back of a Wal-Mart receipt: twenty-eight things she wants to accomplish before her vision comes true. She's well on her way with the help of her next door neighbor Joe, who has no trouble teaching Rose the rules of drinking, but won't help with number fifteen — do more with a man. Joe's new to town, but it doesn't take a vision for Rose to realize he's got plenty secrets of his own.

Somebody thinks Rose has something they want and they'll do anything to get it. Her house is broken into, someone else she knows is murdered, and suddenly, dying a virgin in the Fenton County jail isn't her biggest worry after all.

Two New Trailers for Total Recall

Total Recall (2012)

Sony Pictures released two trailers for Total Recall today, labeling one "Official" and the other "International", but with the exception of a few seconds of additional footage at the end of the "official" one, they seem identical to us. Still, we've embedded both below.

Inspired anew by the famous short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick, the film welcomes you to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life — real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police — controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world — Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

Directed by Len Wiseman from a screenplay by Mark Bomback, James Vanderbilt, and Kurt Wimmer, Total Recall opens in theaters August 3rd, 2012 … and won't have to compete with viewers expecting to see The Bourne Legacy that weekend!

David Handler, Crime Novelist

Earlier today we mentioned that David Handler's "Stewart Hoag" mysteries were now available in ebook format from Mysterious Press.

Now we've learned (also via Mysterious Press) that there is a video profile of the author; we've embedded it below.

"When I sit down to write a murder mystery, I sort of know where I'm going" says Handler, "but what I don't know is how I'm going to get there."

David Handler's current series mysteries feature film critic Mitch Berger and Connecticut police trooper Desiree "Des" Mitry. He is also the author of the stand-alone thriller, Click to Play.

UK Trailer for Looper

Looper (2012)

A UK trailer of time travel crime thriller Looper has been released (via MSN UK); we've embedded it below.

Directed by Rian Johnson from his own original screenplay, the film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a hired gun named Joe, who finds himself the target of his future self (played by Bruce Willis), who travels back from the future to kill him. (It really is remarkable how much Joseph Gordon-Leviltt credibly looks like a younger version of Bruce Willis here.)

Looper opens in theaters September 28th, 2012.

First Photo of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher

Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher (2012)

There really isn't much to see, and it certainly doesn't convey any information about how the actor is portraying the role, but the first image of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher has been released (via EW, right; click for larger image). The photo also shows Reacher's one and only possession, a 1970 Chevelle SS.

Adapted from the novel One Shot by Lee Child, the now titled Jack Reacher is directed by Christopher McQuarrie — who also penned the screenplay — and is scheduled to open in theaters December 21st, 2012.

We don't believe an official synopsis has been released by the studio, but here's the plotline from the book; the action in the film takes place in Pittsburgh:

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.

And sure enough, ex–military investigator Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) is coming. He knows this shooter—a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right—and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.

Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer (Rosamund Pike), moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning—and then beat him shot for shot.
