Would you ruin your career for a man you know is guilty?

On the cusp of realizing her dream as a career military attorney, Captain Tracy Keener is ordered to defend Captain Adam Burke, a Special Operations officer accused of abandoning his team and leaving them to die. Everyone knows he's guilty and defending him will cost Tracy her career, but she has no choice.

Captain Burke swears he was framed. Swears he'd acted under orders. Swears things that can't possibly be true: breaches requiring corruption at the highest levels, the deliberate sacrifice of an entire military team. Impossible!

Until they're proven fact. Under cease and desist orders and then threats to drop the case and let Burke go down, Tracy and Adam rebel, push for truth … and are targeted for assassination. To their horror, they discover others too are marked for death — millions of Americans Adam and she swore an oath to defend at any cost, including their own lives.

Yet to succeed, Tracy and Adam must risk more than their lives. They must risk their hearts. That proves far harder when trapped in an intricate web of duplicity.

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by Warren Adler
with Warren Adler

We are delighted to welcome back novelist Warren Adler to Omnimystery News.

Earlier this month we had a chance to catch up with Warren, whose first Fiona Fitzgerald mystery, American Quartet, was recently reissued in a new digital format.

We asked him to tell us a little more about the character, and he titles his guest post for us today, "The Women Behind the Fiona Fitzgerald Mystery Series".

Detective Fiona Fitzgerald is an unlikely force for justice in Washington D.C's predominantly male police force. As a prominent senator's daughter and top investigator in the homicide division of the Metropolitan Police Department, Fiona maneuvers between two vastly different worlds, moving quickly from opulent State galas to gritty crime scenes. Born into the elite social circles of the nation's capital, and with privileged access to what lurks behind the pristine façade of the political establishment, Fiona is determined to expose the chicanery buried under prim rose bushes and concealed within the highest echelons of the American political aristocracy.

It was the early eighties and mass media consensus on gender was undergoing a massive change. Women were on the march, and the emphasis was on upward mobility and equality on all fronts, especially in the workplace.

In the culture of literary fiction, the concept of the heroic figure was becoming "genderized;" the notion of the cop, soldier, firefighter, construction worker, and other jobs once considered male turf only, was swiftly transforming.

Although I had never tackled the mystery genre, growing in popularity at the time, my agent persuaded me to take the plunge. I lived in the Washington metropolitan area where I had been well connected with the political and social scene; I had previously served as the White House correspondent during the Korean War, was the co-owner of Washington Dossier Magazine, as well as worked as a campaign strategist to President Richard Nixon. I decided to use the police department that covered the nation's Capitol as my focal point. In casting around for a knowledgeable member of the force who could give me some insight into the inner workings of the department and their own psyche, I was lucky to find an experienced female homicide detective who happened to be no stranger to attending glittery dinner parties with a revolver tucked in her evening bag. Her name was Judy Roberts and she led me deep into the entrails of the mindset and procedure of police work.

When I first suggested that she would make a terrific character in my novel, Ms. Roberts replied, "You've got to be kidding." But, with ten years of experience with the local police force under her belt, she had done it all — chased burglars, investigated murders, witnessed one too many autopsies, and attended Ronald Reagan's inaugural with her shoulder holster strapped under her evening gown. With a little persuasion, Roberts was on board. Because I was familiar with the political and social circles of the power elite in Washington, I conceived the idea of Fiona working solely on cases involving the Washington upper crust but as seen through the lens of a woman used to straddling opposite worlds socially and politically.

The first title in the series was American Quartet, a New York Times Notable Crime Book. A string of inexplicable murders has Fiona charging through the shadows of a mysterious conspiracy. Her reputation and career blunder, however, through an investigation with no leads. At the brink of her professional demise, an encounter with the eccentric yet charismatic Thaddeus Remington III at his museum-like mansion sends Fiona hurtling through a whirlwind of clues. Where once the desperate detective rummaged through traceless footsteps of a triple murderer, the key to solving her case is now whispered to her from the bloodstained graves of fallen Presidents.

In the following books, American Sextet, Death of a Washington Madame, The Witch of Watergate, Senator Love, Immaculate Deception, The Ties that Bind, and Washington Masquerade, Detective Fiona Fitzgerald continues to be ensconced in the heady precincts of elite Washington with each new predicament more riddled than the former. The ninth and newest addition to the series, Red Herring, is slated to be released this year.

When a string of inexplicable murders rocks the hallowed streets of central D.C., Fiona finds herself charging through shadows of a mysterious conspiracy. A curmudgeon. An iconoclast. A loner. That's how people describe Garrison Gage, and that's when they're being charitable.

After his wife's brutal murder in New York, and Gage himself is beaten nearly to death, the crippled private investigator retreats three thousand miles to the quaint coastal town of Barnacle Bluffs, Oregon. He spends the next five years in a convalescent stupor, content to bide his time filling out crossword puzzles and trying to forget that his wife's death is his fault. But all that changes when he discovers the body of a young woman washed up on the beach, and his conscience draws him back into his old occupation — forcing him to confront the demons of his own guilt before he can hope to solve the girl's murder.

And, for the first time, Ingrid is in love with a charming detective. But can romance work between a virgin witch and a mortal who doesn't believe in magic? To add to the chaos, a dead spirit is attempting to make contact with Joanna — but does it mean to bring harm or help?

Review: The Devil May Care by David Housewright

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of The Devil May Care by David Housewright. A Rushmore McKenzie Mystery.

Review summary: The plot of this mystery is generally satisfying, with a nicely structured feel to it and yet one that isn't altogether predictable. Even so, it is probably best suited for fans of the series and not necessarily for first-time readers of it. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

A Rushmore McKenzie Mystery
Minotaur Books (June 2014)

Publisher synopsis: Riley Brodin is the granddaughter of Walter Muehlenhaus — a man as rich, powerful, and connected as anyone since the days of J. P. Morgan. Despite her family's connections, it's McKenzie she reaches out to when her relatively new boyfriend goes missing. Despite his reservations about getting involved with the Muehlenhaus family — again — Mac McKenzie agrees to look for one Juan Carlos Navarre. What he finds, though, is a man who appears to be a ghost.

The house — mansion, really — he told Riley he owned is actually a rental, barely lived in and practically devoid of personal effects. The restaurant he claimed to own is owned by another and Navarre merely an investor. He apparently has no friends, no traceable past, and McKenzie isn't the only one looking for him. Whoever Juan Carlos Navarre is and wherever he's gone, the one thing that is clear is that he's trouble, and is perhaps someone — as Riley's family makes clear — better out of the picture. Unfortunately for everyone, McKenzie likes trouble and trouble likes him.

Zilla Trott is pouring her cat some chamomile tea when the drifter appears in her kitchen. He is grubby and crude — not at all the kind of person you'd usually find in the pleasant town of Lobelia Falls — but something about him intrigues the aging widow. Perhaps it's his rugged good looks, or the way he seems to come from another time and place. Or perhaps it's the fact that he's been dead for nearly a century.

When Lobelia Falls was in its rough-and-tumble frontier infancy, Hiram Jellyby was the best mule driver the town had ever seen, until an argument over a hidden cache of gold left him bleeding to death in a back alley. He returns in spectral form to secure a proper burial, and finds that in modern-day Lobelia Falls, no one knows more about turning the soil than Zilla Trott's gardening buddies — all members of Dittany Monk's fearless Grub-and-Stake Gardening and Roving Club.

There's not time to find out as Tressa's boss at the Gazette, Stan Rodgers, wants his Ace Cub Reporter to cover TribRide — the state's ginormous bicycle ride across the state — but not from the sidelines. This assignment is a little more...hands on. Hands on the handlebars, that is. Not only that, but Tressa's ticket to ride is on a bicycle built for two! And at the tandem's helm? Sleazy rival reporter Drew Van Vleet, aka, "the missing link."

Could things get any worse? You decide. Tressa's parents are on the outs. Her sister is on the warpath. Van Vleet's insisting on a Star Trek theme. And Tressa is the number one suspect in a series of SO-not-funny pranks targeting reality TV star Keelie Keller. Talk about strange new worlds! Tressa is about to go where no "Calamity" has gone before — and where the ultimate wedgie is bound to be the least of this uneasy rider's worries! Hang on, folks. It's gonna be a bumpy ride. (I am a Vulcan. I feel no pain.)

When you're an agent for the IRS, it's always tax time. And this season, Tara Holloway is up to her neck in work with two very knotty cases. One involves a charismatic minister who's using his mega-church as a tax shelter. The other is a crazy militant who's trying to turn Texas into a separate country. With her boyfriend out of town and her partner reassigned, Tara is on her own — and things are getting hairy.

If dealing with the Lone Star State isn't enough, Tara has other new issues to take into account: There's a sexy new agent named Nick, who's got her head in the clouds … and Tara's boss, Lu, who's having a hair problem of epic proportions: not even her Chinese contraband industrial-strength hairspray is enough to keep her signature strawberry blonde beehive from falling flat. Can Tara help Lu find a wig — and keep from wigging out over Nick? Love, updos, taxes — this time, Tara's got a whole lot of kinks to iron out …

More about our featured title, below …

Ex-cop Simon Brenner, as part of his never-ending quest to get as far away from being a cop as he can, takes a job as an ambulance driver in downtown Vienna.

It's a hair-raising job, though, made more so by the tendency of the other EMTs to place bets on how many red lights they can run. Even worse, Brenner's new employer has a problem: its major competitor is somehow listening in on radio communications and beating his unit to every pickup. Knowing his past on the force, Brenner's boss asks him to act like a cop and investigate. Meanwhile, is it Brenner's paranoia or are certain wealthy elderly patients who are essentially healthy dying more quickly than they should?

It isn't long before Brenner's life is in real danger, and once again it will take a certain amount of booze, pills, and bad behavior for our man to survive being a cop one more time.
