London's wiliest detectives, Arthur Bryant and John May, are on the case in this fiendishly clever mystery. And when a cemetery becomes the scene of a crime, neither secrets — nor bodies — stay buried …

Romain Curtis sneaks into St. George's Gardens one evening with his date, planning to show her the stars. A centuries-old burial ground, the small, quiet park is the perfect place to be alone. Yet the night takes a chilling turn when the two teenagers spy a strange figure rising from among the tombstones: a corpse emerging from the grave. Suffice it to say that wherever there's a dead man walking, Bryant and May and the Peculiar Crimes Unit are never far behind.

As the PCU investigates the sighting, a second urgent matter requires their unusual brand of problem-solving. Seven ravens have gone missing from their historic home in the Tower of London, and legend has it that when the ravens disappear, England will fall. Bryant has been tasked with recovering the lost birds, but when Romain is suddenly found dead, the two seemingly separate mysteries start to intertwine and point to a plot more sinister than anyone could ever imagine.

Soon Bryant and May find themselves immersed in London's darkest lore, from Victorian-era body snatchers, to arcane black magic, to the grisly myth behind Bleeding Heart Yard, a courtyard long associated with murder. And as the body count spikes and more coffins are unearthed, they will have to dig deep to catch a killer and finally lay these cases to rest.

An Excerpt from The Madness of Mercury, a Zodiac Mystery by Connie di Marco

Omnimystery News: An Excerpt courtesy of Connie di Marco

We are delighted to welcome back author Connie di Marco to Omnimystery News today.

Earlier this week we spoke with Connie about her new Zodiac mysteries, the first book of which is The Madness of Mercury (Midnight Ink; June 2016 trade paperback and ebook formats), and we are so pleased that she decided to share an excerpt of it with us.

— ♦ —

AS I STOOD IN LINE AT the checkout counter of the bookstore an uncomfortable feeling stole over me. Was I being watched? I turned slowly and surveyed the customers in line behind me. No one looked suspicious. No one turned away suddenly. Just holiday shoppers focused on their own business. As I turned back, my eye caught someone standing at a table close by, separated by a metal bar from the line of shoppers. A man, dark hair, black jacket, seemingly immersed in a book he was holding in his hands. No shopping bags in sight. Something about him … I mentally shook myself, pushing the thought out of my mind. I was being paranoid. Nerves were getting the better of me.
When I reached the street, the wind had picked up. Shoppers were doing their best to hang onto their packages and hats and scarves. I pulled up the hood on my coat and, protecting my few finds, headed back to the square. I climbed the steps to the top of Union Square and took cover inside the small coffee shop. The aroma of freshly ground beans filled the space. I ordered a cappuccino and carried it gingerly to a stool near the window where I could watch the skaters on the ice rink under the tree. Maybe this was picking at old wounds. Maybe I just wanted to remember a happier time.
The windows were completely fogged. I rubbed the condensation away with the sleeve of my coat and peeked out. The top of the seventy foot tree and its huge bulbs swayed back and forth in the chilly gusts. Michael and I used to skate here. He was hopeless on his rented skates and wouldn't believe me when I told him it wasn't his ankles, his skates were too large. We'd manage a few passes around the rink, before we'd collapse, laughing on the ice. For a split second I saw his smile and felt the warmth of his hands, remembering how safe I felt when he put his arms around me. An aching so acute swept over me I didn't trust myself not to burst into tears. What is it about the holiday season that brings our missing pieces into such sharp focus? Loss and pain may be there at other times, but somehow it doesn't hurt quite so acutely. Maybe stopping here wasn't such a good idea. I needed to quit feeling sorry for myself. Michael would have been disgusted with me. I was pathetic. I snuffled and rummaged in my purse for a tissue, blowing my nose and wiping my eyes, hoping anyone watching would think I was down with the flu. Suck it up, Julia.
Bundling up against the cold, I retraced my steps and approached the garage entrance. Two people, a man and a woman, doing their best to stay warm under the overhang of the garage were handing out flyers. One stepped in front of me, blocking my path and shoved a flyer at me. Annoyed, I grabbed it and walked briskly into the garage. I glanced down at an announcement of services at the Prophet's Tabernacle. I sighed, and crumpling the paper up, tossed it in a nearby trash can.
I took the elevator down to the lowest level where I had parked. I stepped out and glanced around. In contrast to the crowds of people above on the streets, not a soul was in sight. I felt a frisson of fear. Why was it so deserted? My nerves were just on edge, I decided. I was imagining threats where there were none. I took a deep breath and hurried to my car. I unlocked the door and threw my bags onto the passenger seat. Before I could turn the key in the ignition I glanced in the rearview mirror. A face in a ski mask stared back at me, the eyes bright in the ambient lighting. A gasp caught in my throat. My heart raced as a gloved hand pulled my head back and covered my mouth. I felt the sharp prick of a knife point at my neck. I froze. I couldn't move. I couldn't speak.
"Forget about the Prophet. Make sure you keep your big mouth shut or my next visit won't be so nice," he growled. He pulled the knife away, let go of my jaw and jumped out of the car.

Mercury retrograde wreaks havoc on astrologer Julia Bonatti …

San Francisco astrologer Julia Bonatti's life is turned upside down when she becomes the target of the city's newest cult leader, Reverend Roy of the Prophet's Tabernacle. Driven out of her apartment in the midst of a disastrous Mercury retrograde period, she takes shelter with a client who's caring for two elderly aunts. One aunt appears stricken with dementia and the other has fallen under the spell of the Reverend Roy. To add to the confusion, a young man claiming to be a long-lost nephew arrives. The longer he stays, the more dangerous things become. Is the young man truly a member of the family? Can astrology confirm that? Julia's not sure, but one thing she does know is that Mercury wasn't merely the messenger of the gods―he was a trickster and a liar as well.

A Conversation with Mystery Author Gayle Leeson

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Gayle Leeson

We are delighted to welcome back author Gayle Leeson to Omnimystery News today.

Earlier this week she asked Aunt Bess of her new 1st in series mystery The Calamity Café (NAL; June 2016 mass market paperback and ebook formats) to introduce herself to us, and we wanted to follow up with her to talk more about her work.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: The Calamity Café features the young owner of a small town eatery. Tell us a little more about her.

Gayle Leeson
Photo provided courtesy of
Gayle Leeson

Gayle Leeson: Amy Flowers is a young woman trying to make her dreams come true while living in a rural area. I can identify with that because when I first began writing — in an era prior to the popularity of the Internet — people told me that to become a successful writer, you must live in New York or Los Angeles. I persisted, and so does Amy. The difference is that Amy is trying to give her café patrons the foods they've always loved while introducing them to new dishes they might enjoy … even though she knows that people in her small town are pretty set in their ways and reluctant to try new things.

OMN: How do you see her developing over the course of the series?

GL: I enjoy watching the characters and relationships grow, and I believe my readers do too. For example, in the first embroidery mystery book (The Quick and the Thread, written as Amanda Lee), we were introduced to Vera Langhorne. Vera was a secondary character in the book, and she could have easily been a one-book character. But she showed up in the second book and every book since (the tenth book in that series — Better Off Thread — is coming in December). It has been a lot of fun watching Vera grow from a mousy, browbeaten wife into a sophisticated, vibrant widow. I don't think my main characters change as much as those around them, but of course, cozies are written in first person and we usually don't see changes in ourselves.

OMN: You've written both series books and stand-alones. When starting a new project, how do you decide which it will be?

GL: I usually know when I'm writing a series or a stand-alone but not always. For example, I wrote a stand-alone book (The Flame) about a woman who played a superhero on a children's television show and was also an IRS auditor. The woman and a man she met began investigating a shady attorney who was defrauding estate accounts. But, as I was writing the characters, I really fell in love with them; and I realized that I could easily do a sequel or maybe an entire series around them. In that case, it would depend on whether or not readers of the book would want that. In most cases, my publishers tell me ahead of time that they want the book to be a series and I begin knowing that I want to develop some relationships more slowly, leave some backstory to come out later, etc.

OMN: Suppose Amy were to interview you. What would her first question be?

GL: If Amy, her opening question would be, "Gayle, what's your favorite dish?" And my answer would be, "It's so hard to choose just one! But I think I'd have to go with chicken Alfredo."

OMN: Your mysteries are cozies. Do you find that limiting in any way?

GL: Cozy mysteries are sort of the kinder, gentler, Mayberry-meets-Wisteria Lane mysteries. Most of the time, I think that's great — I don't need to "show" my victim getting his head bashed in or delve into the murderer's thoughts as he committed the crime. But there are things that are simply taboo in the cozy mystery genre. For instance, no aspect of the book should be too much of a downer. I had a series proposal once which was rejected because the mother had early-onset dementia. I thought the dementia — and the heroine's seeking ways to slow down the process — would be interesting for those who had aging parents or caregivers with patients who suffered from dementia. But the publisher at this particular house disagreed. I've been lucky with the café series in that the publisher has allowed me to introduce the reader to some really quirky characters. There's 82-year-old Aunt Bess who's addicted to the Internet; Homer, a bachelor in his late sixties who chooses a new "hero" each day; and Dilly, a woman who comes into the café each day to get a biscuit for the raccoon who comes to her house each evening at sundown. (And I took that character from real life!)

Gayle Leeson is a hybrid author. That means she's half author, half mom, half entrepreneur — okay, not true … plus, she doesn't have that many halves. It means she's both traditionally and self-published. Her cozy mystery series are written under the names Gayle Trent, Amanda Lee, and Gayle Leeson. She has has stand-alones written under Gayle Trent and G. V. Trent.

She lives in Virginia with her family: husband, two children — who are, incidentally, boy/girl twins, two feral cats, one indoor/outdoor cat, and a Great Pyrenees named Cooper who tries to shepherd them all. When not writing or reading, she can be found binge watching shows on Netflix and Amazon Prime.
