Review: Design for Dying by Renee Patrick

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Design for Dying by Renee Patrick. A Lillian Frost and Edith Head Mystery.

Review summary: The murder mystery plot has a few clever twists, but in the end, isn't all that interesting. Rather, it is the series characters who really shine here. Too, the narrative, dialog, and setting are all pitch perfect, taking the reader back to late 1930s Hollywood and making them feel part of the story. It's remarkably well done. Publisher synopsis: Los Angeles, 1937. Lillian Frost has traded dreams of stardom for security as a department store salesgirl … until she discovers she's a suspect in the murder of her former roommate, Ruby Carroll. Party girl Ruby died wearing a gown she stole from the wardrobe department at Paramount Pictures, domain of Edith Head.

Edith has yet to win the first of her eight Academy Awards; right now she's barely hanging on to her job, and a scandal is the last thing she needs. To clear Lillian's name and save Edith's career, the two women join forces.

Unraveling the mystery pits them against a Hungarian princess on the lam, a hotshot director on the make, and a private investigator who's not on the level. All they have going for them are dogged determination, assists from the likes of Bob Hope and Barbara Stanwyck, and a killer sense of style. In show business, that just might be enough.

On a street corner in New York, the scientist is met by a member of 'The Service', Murphy, whose job it is to deliver Kloptik to a secure location — Bermuda. Aboard a plane, Kloptik meets Jack Thornhill, a member of the British Civil Service, and tells his story, delivering worrying news from Eastern Europe: While the West's focus has switched to the Islamist threat, a few old warriors have been continuing their long vigil in Warsaw. A group of academics, who call themselves The Night Watch, after Rembrandt's famous painting, have been observing the secret activities of Soviet Russia in Poland. But when Kloptik is approached by the dangerous and mysterious Golkov, who wants Kloptik to cooperate on a covert and worrying scientific programme, the lives of his fellow academics are threatened. To save his colleagues from harm and morally compromising work, Kloptik agrees to help Golkov in secret.

The scientist is worked to the bone and kept as a prisoner but he manages to disguise an attempt to warn international intelligence of this experiment as a business trip to Hamburg. While Kloptik is away, Golkov trials the drug on 'large mammals' and the potency of the new drug becomes clear: it amplifies human aggression to the point of suicidal carnage. This drug would allow warfare of a new kind.

Aboard the plane, Thornhill and his team, Murphy, Darcy and Morag, assess the likelihood and accountability of Kloptik's story, discussing past organisations who have invested in 'mind control' and human experimentation. Morag believes that whoever is behind Golkov's experiments might be planning to do something at the Global Peace Summit in Geneva because its attempts at peace would make their work impossible. Thornhill thinks that whoever is behind this work must have a huge capital base and access to cutting edge technologies in computers, chemistry, biology and genetics. He believes the USA is the only place in the world where sufficient money and science could be mobilised for a coup like this, and any organisation with that sort of power will also have intimate contacts with government …

Morag believes a billionaire called Aaron November could be the source of this evil and the story moves through the labyrinths of power in Whitehall and Washington, to the Nibelungen of Hamburg's notorious Reeperbahn and out into the deserts of the American South West. There, Helios and Dynamos, huge domed visitor attractions, are showpieces for a future devoid of conflict, but they conceal the price at which such peace is bought.

Will The British Service be able to put an end to Soviet corruption? Will Thornhill and his team be able to discover who the orchestrator of such destruction is? Will they be able to save millions of innocent lives caught in the balance?

For eighteen years Jack has been a "transplant tourism director," sending wealthy Americans and Europeans in need of kidneys and other organs to third world countries where they would buy them from transplant centers on the take. The death of a client and a newfound relationship lead to a crisis of conscience as he is forced to choose between a two million dollar commission — and participating in a murder. Jack races to South Africa, Brazil, and beyond, just one step ahead of his adversary and the FBI, in search of one small act of redemption.

As a disaffected youth in the late eighties, Jack Trayner entered the criminal world, selling coke when he needed money to pay his way through college. Although he later graduated from law school, an opportunity to earn easy money eventually seduced him into the bizarre and illegal black market for organs — a business that some consider horrendous and a small number of others deem to be heroic. The dual nature of this business assuaged Jack's guilt and allowed him to flourish, yet the death of a client makes what he is doing all too real.

"If you were a man, you'd make a good detective."

Ellie is sure that Sgt. McKeever meant that as a compliment, but that identity-a girl wanting to do a man's job-has throttled her for too long. It's 1960, and Ellie doesn't want to blaze any trails for women; she just wants to be a reporter, one who doesn't need to swat hands off her behind at every turn.

Adrift in her career, Ellie is back in New York City after receiving news that her estranged father, a renowned Dante scholar and distinguished professor, is near death after a savage bludgeoning in his home. The police suspect a routine burglary, but Ellie has her doubts. When a second attempt is made on her father's life, in the form of an "accident" in the hospital's ICU, Ellie's suspicions are confirmed.

Then another professor turns up dead, and Ellie's investigation turns to her father's university colleagues, their ambitions, jealousies, and secret lives. Ellie embarks on a thorny journey of discovery and reconciliation, as she pursues an investigation that offers her both a chance at redemption in her father's eyes, and the risk of losing him forever.

When outspoken radio talk show host Philip Long is kidnapped and murdered, Detective Macy Greeley leaves her young son in the care of her mother and heads up to remote Walleye Junction, Montana to take charge of the investigation. It is initially believed that Long's murder is the result of a controversial radio show he's done on the rise of far right militias in the state. Within days the two kidnappers are found dead following a massive heroin overdose, and the authorities are hopeful the investigation is finished. But there are too many discrepancies for Macy to settle for obvious answers. The kidnapper's bodies have been moved, their son is on the run and a series of anonymous emails point investigators toward the murky world of prescription painkiller abuse. Macy soon finds herself immersed in small town intrigues as she races to find who's really responsible for Philip Long's murder.

Meanwhile, Philip Long's daughter Emma is dealing with her own problems. It's been twelve years since she left Walleye Junction after her best friend died from a drug overdose. Emma finds that little in Walleye Junction has changed in her absence. She is also becoming increasingly uneasy as the familiar surroundings stir up memories that are best forgotten.

The morning after an open-house showing in a posh Stockholm suburb, a father is found dead by his six-year-old daughter Astrid. There are no signs of a break-in, and the murder weapon is one of the family's own kitchen knives. The only hint that someone from the outside might be involved is that Astrid claims a strange man stroked her cheek during the night.

Police Inspector Emma Sköld takes up the case. She suspects that the man's wife could be the culprit, but when more murders occur tied to open-house showings, her theory is turned on its head. What's the truth behind the events in the ostensibly idyllic and prosperous residential area? And what is the connection between the victims?

Here you are in New Jersey, but not Soprano-land New Jersey, this is central Jersey, the edge of the Pine Barrens, where the everydayness of life is interrupted by devils and angels, murderers and saviors, cheaters and music fans.

Bobby Kovacki adores his married girlfriend but is compelled to search for Janine, his hard-partying former classmate who has gone missing. Metalhead Marty, odd-looking and shy, has the chance of a lifetime when he joins the band Dark Beast. Tyrell Colton uses a two-foot-long pipe to avenge himself from a bully. Eleanor Webb, eighty-four, deals with her low blood pressure and a violent neighbor. In the title story, scrappy soccer player, Jade, veers down a path in the woods and stumbles upon a trio of terrifying drifters. And in several different tales, police officer Andrea Vogel, widowed and quietly brokenhearted, attempts to rescue the elderly, help an old boyfriend out, and connect with a young rape victim.

Brutal and fierce, the characters in these linked stories search for meaning in their lives but more importantly, they search for the humanity in themselves.
