When Quinn is found abandoned on the streets, the child is placed in a temporary foster home until Child Protective Services can complete an assessment. It should only take a few days.

But a lot can happen in a few days.

Review: White Ghost by Steven Gore

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of White Ghost by Steven Gore. A Graham Gage Thriller.

Review summary: The basic plot here is simplicity itself, but its execution is wildly complicated. What makes the book so readable despite the convoluted scheme that the series character has devised is how transparent he is with his trusted colleagues, and by extension the reader. Exciting and tense, this well-structured novel is recommended. (Click here for text of full review.)

Publisher synopsis: For over thirty years Graham Gage has faced down enemies both near and far, but now he faces one from within.

Diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, Gage must delay treatment in order to repay the woman who saved his life in San Francisco's Chinatown thirty years earlier when he was homicide detective. She has come out of hiding after her troubled teenage son was ensnared and killed in a multimillion dollar microchip robbery executed by the United Bamboo Triad.

With the FBI straight-jacketed and despite his plaguing symptoms, Gage heads to Hong Kong, then on to Thailand, and finally to China to untangle a fast moving and brilliantly orchestrated deal bartering the chips for a billion dollars of China White heroin. Racing ahead of the disease, he puts in place a scheme to tie the conspiracy directly to the US-based godfather behind her son's death.

With his plan in place, Gage returns to the US, hands off the case to the FBI and begins a highly toxic treatment, but is soon drawn into a deadly confrontation with the godfather himself.

Outside the local women's health clinic, the Reverend Jimmy Aldridge waving his protest sign is a familiar sight. But that changes early one morning when someone shoots the beloved Reverend Jimmy dead. Sheriff Shelby Mitchell knows the preacher's murder will shock the good people of Jackson — and the pressure to find the killer is immediate and intense, which is why Shelby calls in detective Darla Cavannah.

When police detective Darla moved from Philadelphia to Jackson with her husband — hometown football hero Hugh "the Glue" Cavannah — she never imagined the culture shock that awaited. Then after Hugh dies in a car crash, Darla enters a self-imposed exile in her Mississippi home, taking a leave of absence from the sheriff's department. Now she's called back to duty — or coerced, more like it, with Shelby slathering on his good-ole-boy charm nice and thick, like on a helping of barbecue.

Reluctantly partnered with a mulish Elvis impersonator, Darla keeps a cool head even as the community demands an arrest. The court of public opinion has already convicted the clinic's doctor, Stephen Nicoletti, but Darla is just as sure he's not guilty — even as she fights her growing attraction to him. From the genteel suburbs to a raunchy strip club, Darla follows a trail of dirty money and nasty secrets — until the day of judgment comes, and she faces down an ungodly assassin.

Kate is strong willed and outspoken — two qualities that often put her at odds with her bosses within the LAPD. There is one thing that Kate lives for, it's her job. Working as a homicide detective is what she loves. It's who she is. It defines her.

Someone is killing shifters in the city, and as the body count continues to rise, Kate and Brennan, her new Shape shifter partner, must find a way to work together as the city tears itself apart out of fear and bigotry — the very same things Kate and Brennan are struggling to overcome.

From the outside, Mill River looks like any sleepy little Vermont town where everyone knows everyone and people never need to lock their doors. There are newcomers for whom this appeals, from police officer Kyle Hansen and his daughter Rowen, who are starting over after heartache, to Claudia Simon, the schoolteacher who is determined to reinvent herself.

But on closer inspection, there are those in Mill River — including a stealthy arsonist, a covetous nurse, and a pilfering priest — who have things they wish to hide. None more than the widow Mary McAllister, who for the past sixty years has secluded herself in her marble mansion overlooking the town. Most of the residents have never even seen the peculiar woman. Only the priest, Father O'Brien, knows the deep secrets that keep Mary isolated — and that, once revealed, will forever change the community.

In 1933, America is at a crossroads: Prohibition will soon be history, organized crime is rampant, and President Roosevelt promises to combat the Great Depression with a New Deal. In these uncertain times, former-Pinkerton-detective-turned-bestselling-author Jake Donovan is beckoned home to Manhattan. He has made good money as the creator of dashing gumshoe Blackie Doyle, but the price of success was Laura Wilson, the woman he left behind. Now a Broadway star, Laura is engaged to a millionaire banker — and waltzing into a dangerous trap.

Before Jake can win Laura back, he's nearly killed — and his former partner is shot dead — after a visit to the Yankee Club, a speakeasy dive in their old Queens neighborhood. Suddenly Jake and Laura are plunged into a conspiracy that runs afoul of gangsters, sweeping from New York's private clubs to the halls of corporate power and to the White House itself. Brushing shoulders with the likes of Dashiell Hammett, Cole Porter, and Babe Ruth, Jake struggles to expose an inconspicuous organization hidden in plain sight, one determined to undermine the president and change the country forever.

For the first time, more than two dozen crime and mystery authors have joined together to use the strongest weapon at their disposal — words — in a call for reasonable gun control in the U.S.A. In this collection you get all the thrills and excitement you come to expect from a great crime story, but without any guns.

From best sellers and writing legends to the brightest stars of the next generation of crime writers, the twenty-five authors here have taken pen in hand to say enough is enough. Gun violence has got to stop and this is our way of speaking out — by showing that gun violence can be removed from the narrative, and maybe from our lives.

It's not anti-gun, it's pro-sanity. And above anything else, these are thrilling crime stories that will surprise and shock, thrill and chill — all without a gun in sight.

The writers are from both sides of the political aisle and many of the authors are gun owners themselves. But everyone felt it was time to speak out. Featuring the talents of J.L. Abramo , Patricia Abbott, Trey R. Barker, Eric Beetner, Alec Cizak, Joe Clifford, Reed Farrel Coleman, Angel Luis Colón, Hilary Davidson, Paul J. John Wells is the only American CIA agent ever to penetrate al Qaeda. Since before the attacks in 2001, Wells has been hiding in the mountains of Pakistan, biding his time, building his cover.

Now, on the orders of Omar Khadri — the malicious mastermind plotting more al Qaeda strikes on America — Wells is coming home. Neither Khadri nor Jennifer Exley, Wells's superior at Langley, knows quite what to expect.

For Wells has changed during his years in the mountains. He has become a Muslim. He finds the United States decadent and shallow. Yet he hates al Qaeda and the way it uses Islam to justify its murderous assaults on innocents. He is a man alone, and the CIA — still reeling from its failure to predict 9/11 or find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq — does not know whether to trust him. Among his handlers at Langley, only Exley believes in him, and even she sometimes wonders. And so the agency freezes Wells out, preferring to rely on high-tech means for gathering intelligence.

But as that strategy fails and Khadri moves closer to unleashing the most devastating terrorist attack in history, Wells and Exley must somehow find a way to stop him, with or without the government's consent.

Cinemystery: New Poster, Trailer for Jason Bourne

Jason Bourne (Universal)

Universal Pictures has released a new poster (right; click for slightly larger image) and trailer (below) for the fifth Bourne film simply titled Jason Bourne. It is the fourth to feature Matt Damon as the character created by Robert Ludlum; he skipped the most recent release, The Bourne Legacy, which starred Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross.

Little is known about the plotline of Jason Bourne. The official announcement simply states that the film "finds the CIA's most lethal former operative drawn out of the shadows." Last year Damon said, "Without giving too much of it away, it's Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy."

With an original screenplay (not based on any of Ludlum's books) by Paul Greengrass (who also directed) and Christopher Rouse, Jason Bourne opens in theaters on July 29th, 2016.
