Review: Lie In Wait by Eric Rickstad

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Lie In Wait by Eric Rickstad. A Novel of Suspense.

Review summary: This novel is written largely as a police procedural, with a lot of character development on all sides of the murder investigation. The setting, too, is given almost as much attention as the characters, providing a rich backdrop to the proceedings. Overall, an engrossing novel of suspense with a riveting storyline. A serial killer is targeting the women of Mears, Colorado, and so far the police have nothing to go on. Detective Casey O'Toole is assigned to jump-start the investigation, and she discovers two unsettling facts: the victims were all patients of a prominent plastic surgeon, and each of them bears an uncanny resemblance to herself.

Ruled out as a suspect, Dr. Mark Adams offers to assist Casey in any way he can and, despite her resistance, their relationship quickly turns personal. The pressure on Casey to find the killer mounts steadily as terror grips the small mountain community. Then a stunning twist leads Casey to the deadly truth — and to the face of a killer nearly as familiar as her own.

When the decomposing body of a young woman is found, the wounds on her wrists suggest an open-and-shut case of suicide. But Jack Caffery is not so sure. Other apparent suicides are cropping up, and they all have a connection to Elf's Grotto, a nearly bottomless network of flooded quarries just outside the city. Caffery begins to suspect a shadowy and sinister predator, someone — or something — that can disappear into darkness and slip into houses unseen.

Working alongside Caffery is rough-and-tough police diver Flea Marley, but while pursuing her investigation, she stumbles upon something far too close to home that no one — not even Caffery — can help her face.

Emory Crawford, homemaker wife of chemistry and forensic science professor Dr. Jebbin Crawford, doesn't expect the Midwest Anthropological Studies Society's conference to be much different than any of the other conferences held at Twombly College. Sure, she and Jebbin are friends of the guest speaker, ethnomusicologist and best selling author Dr. Archibald Finlay Dawson, and they are on the bill with him Friday as the entertainment after the opening night dinner. But things really change when, after Archie leaves she and Jebbin to handle the meet and greet after the gig, they find Archie's murdered body in a campus garden on their way home. He's been strangled with the strings from his fiddle and has amulets with Devil symbols and small leather pouches lying on his chest.

Jairus Aiden Merriweather Twombly VI, descendant of the founder of both the town of Twombly and the college, is, like his ancestor, the mover and shaker of both. He tells the authorities, the pathologist at the hospital and Jebbin that they will have the case solved and the killer in custody before the suspect pool leaves at the end of the M.A.S.S. conference in six days.

Emory realizes she can be of help. She met some of the conferees while working the Twombly College welcome and information table where everyone registered. She isn't the police, just a friendly professor's wife. People will talk to her about things they won't mention when being formally questioned. Armed with her knitting tote to help her channel the spirit of Miss Jane Marple, and her inherited gift of insight, she heads off to be a crime solving busy body.

England, 1185. John is a prince without prospect of a crown. As the youngest son of Henry II, he has long borne the hated nickname 'Lackland'. When warring tribes and an ambitious Anglo-Norman lord threaten Henry's reign in Ireland, John believes his time has finally come. Henry is dispatching him there with a mighty force to impose order.

Yet it is a thwarted young man who arrives on the troubled isle. John has not been granted its kingship — he is merely the Lord of Ireland, destined never to escape his father's shadow. Unknown to John, Henry has also sent his right-hand man, Sir Benedict Palmer, to root out the traitors he fears are working to steal the land from him.

But Palmer is horrified when John disregards Henry's orders and embarks on a campaign of bloodshed that could destroy the kingdom. Now Palmer has to battle the increasingly powerful Lord of Ireland. Power, in John's hands, is a murderous force — and he is only just beginning to wield it.

Poisonous by Allison Brennan, Amazon Kindle format

Teen-aged Internet bully Ivy Lake fell off a cliff and few people cared … except her mentally-challenged eighteen-year-old step-brother, Tommy. He loved her in spite of her cruelty. He's distraught and doesn't understand why his blended family is falling apart. After a year, the police still have no answers: Ivy could have jumped, could have been pushed, or it could have been an accident. With too many suspects and not enough evidence, the investigation has grown cold.

Tommy thinks that if someone can figure out what happened to his step-sister, everything will go back to normal, so he writes to investigative reporter Maxine Revere. This isn't the type of case Max normally takes on, but the heartbreak and simple honesty in Tommy's letter pulls her in. She travels to Corte Madera, California, with her assistant David Kane and is at first pleased that the police are cooperative. But the more Max learns about Tommy and his dysfunctional family, the more she thinks she's taken on an impossible task: this may be the one case she can't solve.

If Ivy was murdered, it was exceptionally well-planned and that kind of killer could be hiding in plain sight … planning the next act of violence. Max believes the truth is always better than lies, that the truth is the only thing that matters to gain justice for victims and their families. But for the first time, she wonders if this time, the truth will kill.
