Emory Crawford, homemaker wife of chemistry and forensic science professor Dr. Jebbin Crawford, doesn't expect the Midwest Anthropological Studies Society's conference to be much different than any of the other conferences held at Twombly College. Sure, she and Jebbin are friends of the guest speaker, ethnomusicologist and best selling author Dr. Archibald Finlay Dawson, and they are on the bill with him Friday as the entertainment after the opening night dinner. But things really change when, after Archie leaves she and Jebbin to handle the meet and greet after the gig, they find Archie's murdered body in a campus garden on their way home. He's been strangled with the strings from his fiddle and has amulets with Devil symbols and small leather pouches lying on his chest.
Jairus Aiden Merriweather Twombly VI, descendant of the founder of both the town of Twombly and the college, is, like his ancestor, the mover and shaker of both. He tells the authorities, the pathologist at the hospital and Jebbin that they will have the case solved and the killer in custody before the suspect pool leaves at the end of the M.A.S.S. conference in six days.
Emory realizes she can be of help. She met some of the conferees while working the Twombly College welcome and information table where everyone registered. She isn't the police, just a friendly professor's wife. People will talk to her about things they won't mention when being formally questioned. Armed with her knitting tote to help her channel the spirit of Miss Jane Marple, and her inherited gift of insight, she heads off to be a crime solving busy body.
