Ricky picks Ray up in the taxi he has been driving since returning from serving as a Marine in Iraq, but before Ricky can tell Ray what's going on the windows of the taxi explode under a hail of bullets killing Ricky and knocking Ray unconscious as he dives to pull Ricky out of harm's way.
Ray would've done anything to help Ricky out while he was alive. Now that he's dead, he'll go to the same lengths to find out who did it and why. All he has to go on is that Ricky was working with Jack Knight, another ex-cop turned PI. They were investigating the disappearance of a PR giant's daughter who had ties to the same Brooklyn streets that all three of them used to work. Is that what got Ricky killed or was he into something even more dangerous? Was there anything that Ray could've done for him while he was alive? Is there anything he can do for him now?

For the first time in her life, as she recovers from the trauma of the last few months, Lacey begins to feel almost happy.
Then, at dawn one hot summer morning while swimming down the river, Lacey finds the body of a shrouded young woman in the water. Three women have been strangled in their homes, and it appears to be the work of the same sadistic killer. The victims' neighbors and friends don't seem to remember anything unusual or suspicious, and Maeve is almost at a loss about how to move forward with the investigation.
Then the evidence starts to point to a shocking suspect: DCI Josh Derwent, Maeve's partner on the police force. Maeve refuses to believe he could be involved, but how well does she really know him? Secrets Derwent has long kept locked away are coming back to haunt him, and the more Maeve learns about her partner's past, the more difficult it is to dismiss him as a suspect. The Black Hour by Lori Rader-Day
A Novel of Suspense
Publisher: Seventh Street Books
Read our review of The Black Hour by Lori Rader-Day on Mysterious Reviews.
For Chicago sociology professor Amelia Emmet, violence was a research topic — until a student she'd never met shot her.
He also shot himself. Now he's dead and she's back on campus, trying to keep up with her class schedule, a growing problem with painkillers, and a question she can't let go: Why?
All she wants is for life to get back to normal, but normal is looking hard to come by. She's thirty-eight and hobbles with a cane. Her first student interaction ends in tears (hers). Her fellow faculty members seem uncomfortable with her, and her ex — whom she may or may not still love — has moved on.
Enter Nathaniel Barber, a graduate student obsessed with Chicago's violent history. Nath is a serious scholar, but also a serious mess about his first heartbreak, his mother's death, and his father's disapproval. Assigned as Amelia's teaching assistant, Nath also takes on the investigative legwork that Amelia can't do. And meanwhile, he's hoping she'll approve his dissertation topic, the reason he came to grad school in the first place: the student attack on Amelia Emmet.
Together and at cross-purposes, Amelia and Nathaniel stumble toward a truth that will explain the attack and take them both through the darkest hours of their lives.

New on the Mystery Bookshelf during January 2015 …
Sunset Island by Elliott Mackle, A Dan Ewing, Caloosa Club Mystery (3rd in series)
Publisher: Lethe Press
February, 1950. Lee County, Florida. In the freewheeling, celebratory aftermath of World War II, survivors and veterans are starting new lives, resuming old ones, or just picking up the pieces.
Former Navy officer Dan Ewing feels safer than any gay man might expect in a segregated, dry county where the Ku Klux Klan is still strong. Managing an ultra-private club-hotel in Ft. Myers with a mixed-race staff, untaxed alcohol, high-stakes card games and escorts of both sexes, he's been acting like he has nothing to lose: business is good and his romantic life is better. Lee County Detective Bud Wright, a former Marine sergeant and Dan's secret lover, is outwardly strong and brave, but uneasy with the knowledge that, every time he and Dan get naked together, they're breaking laws he's sworn to uphold. It's nothing that a few drinks can't get him past, especially when moonlighting as security for Dan's hotel. Both men have their work cut out for them, however, once a hurricane evacuation brings to the hotel wealthy, well-connected non-members who happen to own Sunset Island, a secluded resort fronting the Gulf of Mexico. Their arrival sets in motion a turnover of hotel staff, sensual and sordid seductions, brutal assaults, the discovery of looted art from Holocaust victims, and, of course, murder. After drowned men start washing ashore on nearby beaches, Dan and Bud must set to work unraveling war-related mysteries and exploring the implications of a rapidly changing society in those postwar years.

The Complete Series
In this immensely popular German comedy, Bjarne Mädel stars as Heiko "Schotty" Schotte — a man whose work begins where others pass in horror. He's a contract cleaner, sent to sanitize crime scenes after the police have finished their investigations. A high school dropout, Schotty accepts his place in life and has dedicated himself to two things: finding a hot girlfriend and being the best crime scene cleaner in Germany. Schotty can tell you the difference between bloodstains, spatters and smears and the most effective chemical mixture to remove them from any surface, but he's not so much an expert on the opposite sex.
An everyman who loves football, fast cars and good beer, Schotty frequently encounters friends, family and acquaintances of the deceased who have a much less pragmatic approach to death than he does. But in the end, no matter the scope of the crime or the size of the mess, Schotty is there to clean it all up!
Ten episodes are included in this set. In German with English subtitles.

Set One
Inspector Marie Brand looks like she could be anyone's friendly aunt, but her nondescript looks belie phenomenal mental abilities. Her thinking is out-of-the-box scary: she sees physical inconsistencies at the crime scene immediately, she's constantly collecting details about everything and she always has a unique take on situations. Add to the mix that she's good at sensing when she's being lied to, and you've got the ideal murder investigator.
But after the death of her policeman father, she said goodbye to homicides — or so she thought. She finds herself back on the murder beat when she's called in to consult on a difficult case, working with the self-described ladies' man, Inspector Jürgen Simmel. Simmel can't wait to be rid of her, but his disdain turns into appreciation. It's a May/December pairing that works; he's tolerant of her eccentricities once he comprehends the scope of her brilliance, and she needs a little protection along with the common sense and physicality he brings to the equation. She's also happy to bring a blast of reality to his overblown perception of himself as the city's finest lady whisperer. Together, they're an entertaining German dream team, catching the murderers, criminals and crooks of Cologne.
This set includes Episodes 1-10. In German with English subtitles.

Volume Two
Paris, 1761. Brilliant young Parisian police commissioner Nicolas Le Floch works under Monsieur de Sartine, the Royal Lieutenant General of Police. Louis XV's kingdom is plagued by conspiracies and murders. With the help of his faithful subordinate Bourdeau, Nicolas solves mysterious disappearances and sorts out awkward scandals. From seedy taverns to the muffled hallways of Versailles, from brothels to the Chatelet prisons, he tracks and stakes out suspects, questions witnesses, gathers evidence, foils traps, and unveils plotters.
Nicolas Le Floch plunges viewers into the mysteries of 18th century Paris, a world teeming with crime, debauchery and theft. The series is a successful blend of police intrigue and melodrama, as well as a portrayal of the period's social customs and humor. All of this is presented in great style. The characters are sensitive, original and deep. They show the eternal nature of man s passions, feelings … and crimes. In the end, no one could be more contemporary than Nicolas Le Floch, Police Commissioner at the Chatelet.
Episodes 7 through 10 are included in this set. In French with English subtitles.
