Dreary, desolate, shrouded. And most unnerving of all, forbidden. Such was the bizarre circumstance surrounding the north wing of Rochester Manor, as Abigail was about to discover …

Late in the summer of 1887, shortly after her 19th birthday, Abigail Parker's life took an unforeseen turn. Although she wasn't looking for love, it found her in the form of a handsome, wealthy stranger who swept her off her feet, and soon she would embark upon a journey filled with the promise of bliss.

Exciting though it was, it was also daunting for her to enter into a lifestyle she was ill-equipped to handle. While this fact was evident, no one could have prepared her for the true challenge she was to face, and the staggering secret waiting to be unearthed in the North Wing.

The not-guilty verdict has left psychological scars. Most of his staff are showing signs of hostility towards him and now even his girlfriend's dumped him.

The bodies of two young women are discovered as a murderer goes on a killing spree. The first is strangled, the next brutally stabbed. When Cowell discovers a matching signature he realises that he and his new partner are searching for the area's first serial killer.

Somehow the local radio station and its presenters are involved in the mystery, but what is that link? What is the motivation? For DCI Cowell this is the lowest point of his life, but can he pull himself together and unravel the strands to track down the killer before it's too late?

When twenty-something journalist Joe Jonas is sent to cover a press conference in Texas he figures it's just another crackpot JFK assassination conspiracy theory. But as he's half-assing through the legwork he stumbles across something that makes him realize this one might be for real. It gets even better when Abby Reno, a saucy reporter from Austin, insists on working on the story with him.

As Jonas and Reno circle closer to the plot they come to realize that the protectors of the secrets are still on the job and they don't take prisoners. The bodies pile up while the reporters look over their shoulders wondering if the story of the century is worth their lives.

Joanna and her daughters, bookish Ingrid and wild-child Freya, are just settling into the newfound peace that has been cast over their small, off-the-map coastal town of North Hampton. With the centuries-old restriction against practicing magic lifted, casting spells, mixing potions, and curing troubled souls has never felt so good for the three witches. That is, until everything gets turned upside down.

It all begins when Freya's twin, Freddie, suddenly returns, professing innocence on a long-ago crime and blaming Freya's fiancé. Torn between brother and lover, Freya doesn't know who to trust. And, for the first time, Ingrid is in love with a charming detective. But can romance work between a virgin witch and a mortal who doesn't believe in magic? To add to the chaos, a dead spirit is attempting to make contact with Joanna — but does it mean to bring harm or help?

As the witches pull together to discover the culprit behind Freddie's imprisonment, everything is thrown into peril. Will the discovery come too late to save those they love most?

Atlanta would be a nice place to live, if it weren't for the magic. When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate's guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta's magic circles.

The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings — and the death of Kate's guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she's way out of her league — but she wouldn't have it any other way.

Review: The Devil May Care by David Housewright

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of The Devil May Care by David Housewright. A Rushmore McKenzie Mystery.

Review summary: The plot of this mystery is generally satisfying, with a nicely structured feel to it and yet one that isn't altogether predictable. Even so, it is probably best suited for fans of the series and not necessarily for first-time readers of it. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

A Rushmore McKenzie Mystery
Minotaur Books (June 2014)

Publisher synopsis: Riley Brodin is the granddaughter of Walter Muehlenhaus — a man as rich, powerful, and connected as anyone since the days of J. P. Morgan. Despite her family's connections, it's McKenzie she reaches out to when her relatively new boyfriend goes missing. Despite his reservations about getting involved with the Muehlenhaus family — again — Mac McKenzie agrees to look for one Juan Carlos Navarre. What he finds, though, is a man who appears to be a ghost.

The house — mansion, really — he told Riley he owned is actually a rental, barely lived in and practically devoid of personal effects. The restaurant he claimed to own is owned by another and Navarre merely an investor. He apparently has no friends, no traceable past, and McKenzie isn't the only one looking for him. Whoever Juan Carlos Navarre is and wherever he's gone, the one thing that is clear is that he's trouble, and is perhaps someone — as Riley's family makes clear — better out of the picture. Unfortunately for everyone, McKenzie likes trouble and trouble likes him.

Zilla Trott is pouring her cat some chamomile tea when the drifter appears in her kitchen. He is grubby and crude — not at all the kind of person you'd usually find in the pleasant town of Lobelia Falls — but something about him intrigues the aging widow. Perhaps it's his rugged good looks, or the way he seems to come from another time and place. Or perhaps it's the fact that he's been dead for nearly a century.

When Lobelia Falls was in its rough-and-tumble frontier infancy, Hiram Jellyby was the best mule driver the town had ever seen, until an argument over a hidden cache of gold left him bleeding to death in a back alley. He returns in spectral form to secure a proper burial, and finds that in modern-day Lobelia Falls, no one knows more about turning the soil than Zilla Trott's gardening buddies — all members of Dittany Monk's fearless Grub-and-Stake Gardening and Roving Club.

It's late July, and Tressa Jayne Turner's summer is as sizzling as Ranger Rick Townsend! But is Tressa in love or lust with the hot ranger? There's not time to find out as Tressa's boss at the Gazette, Stan Rodgers, wants his Ace Cub Reporter to cover TribRide — the state's ginormous bicycle ride across the state — but not from the sidelines. This assignment is a little more...hands on. Hands on the handlebars, that is. Not only that, but Tressa's ticket to ride is on a bicycle built for two! And at the tandem's helm? When you're an agent for the IRS, it's always tax time. And this season, Tara Holloway is up to her neck in work with two very knotty cases. One involves a charismatic minister who's using his mega-church as a tax shelter. The other is a crazy militant who's trying to turn Texas into a separate country. With her boyfriend out of town and her partner reassigned, Tara is on her own — and things are getting hairy.

If dealing with the Lone Star State isn't enough, Tara has other new issues to take into account: There's a sexy new agent named Nick, who's got her head in the clouds … and Tara's boss, Lu, who's having a hair problem of epic proportions: not even her Chinese contraband industrial-strength hairspray is enough to keep her signature strawberry blonde beehive from falling flat. Can Tara help Lu find a wig — and keep from wigging out over Nick? Love, updos, taxes — this time, Tara's got a whole lot of kinks to iron out …

Ex-cop Simon Brenner, as part of his never-ending quest to get as far away from being a cop as he can, takes a job as an ambulance driver in downtown Vienna.

It's a hair-raising job, though, made more so by the tendency of the other EMTs to place bets on how many red lights they can run. Even worse, Brenner's new employer has a problem: its major competitor is somehow listening in on radio communications and beating his unit to every pickup. Knowing his past on the force, Brenner's boss asks him to act like a cop and investigate. Meanwhile, is it Brenner's paranoia or are certain wealthy elderly patients who are essentially healthy dying more quickly than they should?

It isn't long before Brenner's life is in real danger, and once again it will take a certain amount of booze, pills, and bad behavior for our man to survive being a cop one more time.

Now Kathy finds herself the target of a government inquiry and outrage from the dead soldier's platoon mates. Soon she finds herself in the sights of a sniper, as well. When the sergeant is shot outside her farmhouse, Mike joins the hunt to find the mysterious man responsible. To do so, the ex-warden must plunge into his friend's secret past — even as a beautiful woman from Mike's own past returns, throwing into jeopardy his tentative romance with wildlife biologist Stacey Stevens.

As Kathy Frost lies on the brink of death and a dangerous shooter stalks the blueberry barrens of central Maine, Bowditch is forced to confront the choices he has made and determine, once and for all, the kind of man he truly is.
