A Kay Hamilton Mystery (1st in series)
Publisher: Blue Rider Press

Bold, brash, and beautiful, Kay Hamilton is not your average DEA agent — she's as infuriating as she is irresistible. Having recently been transferred to San Diego after a case in Miami brought her more notoriety than medals, Kay once again finds herself embroiled in an international bust.

Tito Olivera, younger brother of drug czar Caesar Olivera, is within her grasp. If she takes down Tito, Kay is positive that Caesar will follow — and when Caesar falls, so does the largest and most vicious cartel in Mexico.

But when a mysterious stranger shows up on her doorstep, all of Kay's carefully laid plans are thrown out the window. The Olivera case suddenly becomes far more personal — not to mention dangerous — and Kay must be willing to sacrifice everything to get her man.

A Psychlogical Thriller
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer

Holly Troy's mind is a complex maze of myth and reality, multiple personalities vying for time in the spotlight. As an artist, she is creative and compelling. As a witness, she is painfully unreliable, unsure of even which person she was the night of the murder. Even Holly can’t be sure of her own innocence.

Homicide detective Orson Cheever never thought he would find himself playing psychologist to a Greek goddess in a modern-day murder investigation, but many of Holly's personalities come straight from classical mythology, from Cronos and Pandora to the Fates.

As Cheever attempts to unravel truth from myth, he learns that there is even more to Holly than meets the eye. One personality in particular — that of a five-year-old girl — hits a little too close to home, and Cheever is forced to finally pull back the dark curtains of his own past in order to uncover the truth.

Telemystery: Fox Orders Backstrom to Series

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Fox has ordered a 13-episode season of Backstrom, based on a character created by Swedish crime novelist Leif G. W. Persson. The pilot, written by Hart Hanson and starring Rainn Wilson as police detective Evert Backstrom, was originally ordered by CBS, which passed on the project. (The setting has been moved from Stockholm in the books to Portland, Oregon for the television series.)

"Hart Hanson and Rainn Wilson are the perfect combination of creative vision and on-screen talent to bring this one-of-a-kind character and story like Backstrom to Fox," said Fox chairman Kevin Reilly.

Hanson is also the executive producer of Fox's Bones, itself based on a series character created by mystery author Kathy Reichs.

Writing both crime and historical fiction allows me the opportunity to employ a variety of research techniques. In crime writing it's vital to get the facts right, particularly police procedural terminology and hierarchy but equally important to allow the story room to breathe. I use research to underpin the story, but only if it's crucial to the plot. I'm fortunate in having a serving Scene of Crime Officer as a valued friend to offer advice re evidential procedures. I also have many books written by professionals within crime related fields, bought after attending seminars at crime festivals. Being an expert in any field isn't necessary, knowing where to access the information definitely is. The internet is a valuable tool, not only to source up to date information, but you can hop onto Google earth and research your crime scene almost anywhere in the world. My horror, thriller Bedlam begins with the discovery of a particularly gruesome multiple, murder. It was important to understand initial UK murder scene procedure and hierarchy, in order to present it as accurately as possible without the story becoming bogged down in unnecessary detail.

My research for my medieval trilogy "The Wildewood Chronicles" is slightly different. I have an advantage in that I live in an area steeped in history and my own home is built on the foundations of a medieval chapel and crypt. Research in this field is definitely a labour of love. I still use the internet, but there's also a lot of footwork, visiting sites of interest and lots of reading. It's not just about the facts, the historical events; you also have to capture the feel of the period, the language, culture and behaviours. And you have to do it all with a careful hand so that the story, that wonderful creation, isn't swamped by historical data. In the case of my historical novels I create a research document, a timeline to underpin the plot. A skeleton if you like which supports the muscle and flesh of the story. Once it's in place, I'm quite ruthless in removing all but the absolutely necessary. It's a fine balance. The amount of research shouldn't be obvious to the reader, it should in my opinion, be seamless to the story.

Born in the North East of England, B. A. Morton writes across a number of genres including crime, romance, horror and historical fiction. After a twenty year civil service career, she and her family escaped the rat race and relocated to the remote beauty of the Northumberland National Park. She now works part time in the village GP surgery and lives in a cottage built on the remains of a medieval crypt. Her debut novel Mrs Jones, a fast paced, romantic, crime thriller set in New York, was runner up in the Yeovil Literary Prize 2011, published by Taylor Street Publishing and closely followed by the sequel Molly Brown, and the first in a medieval trilogy "The Wildewood Chronicles".

Detective Tess McCrae investigates a grisly crime scene in the ghost town of Credo, Arizona. To an ordinary investigator, the evidence suggests a cartel drug hit. But Tess, with a nearly faultless photographic memory, is far from ordinary, and she sees what others might miss: this is no drug killing. Someone went to gruesome lengths to cover up this crime.

The killer's trail leads Tess from Tucson to California; from anti-government squatters in the Arizona mountains to the heights of wealthy society, including the rich and powerful DeKoven family, who've dominated Arizona commerce and politics since the 1800s. But as Tess follows the trail of gore and betrayal, perfect and indelible in her memory, she uncovers far more than one man's murder, and solves much more than one isolated crime.

Telemystery: HBO's True Detective Promotional Package

True Detective (January 2014)

We received a large package this afternoon and were rather shocked to discover what was inside: a structure of tied twigs placed within a once water-soaked (though now dried) bankers box labeled "Louisiana State Evidence" (image, right; click for larger version).

We immediately recognized the twigs — something similar was hanging from a tree in the trailer for HBO's upcoming series True Detective — and sure enough inside the box lid is stamped "HBO" and "#TrueDetective". Kind of a creepy but also kind of an effective promotion!

Here's a synopsis from the network for the series, followed by the trailer.

In 2012, Louisiana State Police Detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) are brought in to revisit a homicide case they worked in 1995. As the inquiry unfolds in present day through separate interrogations, the two former detectives narrate the story of their investigation, reopening unhealed wounds, and drawing into question their supposed solving of a bizarre ritualistic murder in 1995. The timelines braid and converge in 2012 as each man is pulled back into a world they believed they'd left behind. In learning about each other and their killer, it becomes clear that darkness lives on both sides of the law.

True Detective premieres this Sunday, January 12th, 2014, on HBO.
