Telemystery: James Patterson's Private Thrillers to be Adapted for Television

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Though James Patterson — with all due credit to his stable of co-authors — has achieved great success with publishing what seems like a book a month, the transition of his novels to television has been, well, uneven. That's doesn't stop studios from trying.

The latest is Sonar Entertainment via Tribeca Productions, which is planning an adaptation of Patterson's "Private" thrillers. Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer, Runner Runner) is set to direct a two-part pilot written by John McLaughlin (Black Swan, Coma, Hitchcock, Parker). The project doesn't yet have a home on network or cable television.

More about the first book in the series, below.

A Jack Morgan, Private Thriller (1st in series)

Former Marine helicopter pilot Jack Morgan runs Private, a renowned investigation company with branches around the globe. It is where you go when you need maximum force and maximum discretion. The secrets of the most influential men and women on the planet come to Jack daily--and his staff of investigators uses the world's most advanced forensic tools to make and break their cases.

Jack is already deep into the investigation of a multi-million dollar NFL gambling scandal and the unsolved slayings of 18 schoolgirls when he learns of a horrific murder close to home: his best friend's wife, Jack's former lover, has been killed. It nearly pushes him over the edge. Instead, Jack pushes back and devotes all of Private's resources to tracking down her killer.

But Jack doesn't have to play by the rules. As he closes in on the killer and chooses between revenge and justice, Morgan has to navigate a workplace love affair that threatens to blow the roof off his plans.

Please Welcome Novelist J.T. Riggen

Omnimystery News: Guest Post by J.T. Riggen
with J.T. Riggen

We are delighted to welcome novelist J.T. Riggen to Omnimystery News.

J.T.'s debut thriller is Uptown (Dog Ear Publishing; May 2013 trade paperback and ebook formats), and today he introduces us to the book by providing a backstory to the characters and the storyline.

My debut novel tackles the issue of sex trafficking head on, with an irresistibly-captivating and thought-provoking narrative.

The story is told from multiple simultaneous perspectives creating complex feelings of attachment to each character including the hero, the villain, and the victim, and will keep readers guessing as to which character fits into each role all the way to the fast-paced and breathtaking conclusion.

It is a book based on opposite/opposing perspectives as well as how far people are willing to go to achieve "true justice", and to what degree an act can be "just" when the path to get it becomes so twisted and sinister.

It also raises some deeper and more profound gray-area questions regarding our perception of ethics, morals, and the current system. Rachel Davis' story will captivate and inspire while the juxtaposition of the other characters will force people to think about where their morals and ethics lie.

I want my readers to have something totally new to sink their teeth into. Sex trafficking is a very real problem in our country, yet few books will fictionalize it for fear of offending victims. I'm certainly trying to push the boundaries in a way that highlights the problems we face with this reprehensible illegal trade, while staying respectful of those living the life for themselves.

Writing Uptown has been the most fun and rewarding experience I have ever had. When I first started writing this novel it was simply because I was in-between jobs at the time and wanted to keep myself busy by pursuing a lifelong passion in writing. After a couple weeks my mind began to race faster and faster with bigger and better ideas. It came to a point where I had to slow myself down and start the process from the beginning with a bit more intention and focus.

I decided to tackle this book starting with the characters. I knew that this would be a multiple POV novel, and I wanted the content to force the reader to empathize and sympathize with everyone's story. Jose Ortega, a famous Spanish philosopher wrote, "Yo soy yo y mi circunstancia," which translated means, "I am I plus my circumstances." This holds true within each character's presentation and plays to the reader's emotional connection to each individual. A book can have the best, most original and fast paced action sequences ever written, but without extreme investment in characters, those scenes become worthless. So I started by writing down every single character's deepest and most deep-rooted personality traits/strengths/and flaws as if writing their autobiography from a psychotherapist's point of view.

For example here is a look at my actual, original pass at the characterization of the main character, Mark Kennedy:

Mark Kennedy is a hyper-motivated, highly trained, intelligent individual that is overrun with complex and often conflicting attitudes, morals, and perspective. He wants desperately to make a difference and help those who are truly in need. He wants desperately to do right by his colleagues, friends, and family. However, he often finds himself on the razor's edge between behaviour that is truly ethical (despite its legality) and behaviour that is certainly not, especially when it comes to his investigations. Burdened by the system and personal loss, he finally takes his first step down a dark path that leads him to commit a brutal crime for which he is sentenced to life in prison without parole. Completely disenfranchised, the line between right and wrong blur and fade. His ability to be icy-calm in high stress situations, coupled with his developing superficial confidence and anxiety during day-to-day life spreads his psyche thin, and makes him as much an invaluable asset as it does a dangerous liability to all he comes into contact with.

From this point in the process, once the character profiles were complete, I envisioned that the story I was about to tell was simply a retrospective documentary on a series of individual events that collided; a series of "truths" that converged and compiled to create the story, Uptown. I hope you all enjoy!

Jim Riggen hails from Montpelier, Vermont. After graduating from the University of Vermont, he moved to Miami, Florida, where he attended Barry University's Physician Assistant Master's program. The sharp contrasts between his hometown and Miami fascinated him. Especially intriguing was the idea that so many individual life-changing events can occur simultaneously — a birth and a death, a wedding and a kidnapping — and how these different paths can collide unexpectedly, leading Jim to write Uptown, a book founded on these stark contrasts.

Uptown by J.T. Riggen

A Crime Thriller

Ex-Detective Mark Kennedy was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for his part in a vicious, mob-related crime. He does what he must to survive prison life, and when he suddenly finds himself free — back amongst old friends and enemies-he is drawn into a life he never thought he would lead again.

Rachel Davis is a capable young woman, ready for college and the beginning of her new life, yet she is unprepared for the terror that awaits her on an innocent night out on the town.

Detective Will Sutherland thought he had escaped the corruption of his previous job when he moved to Brattleboro, Vermont, but with the sudden rise in local violent crime, he is forced to face his past-and his dangerous obsession with his own investigation.

Set against the backdrop of a luxurious, state-of-the-art casino that attracts both high rollers and the lowest of criminals, these characters' individual stories are woven into a dark tapestry. It's a world where manipulation means control, and the concept of trust is the difference between life and death.

Who is willing to go the furthest and break the rules to achieve justice? And to what degree is justice served when the path to attain it turns sinister and twisted?

New Poster for Suspense Thriller Oldboy

Oldboy (October 2013)

A new poster has been released by FilmDistrict for the suspense thriller Oldboy (right; click for larger image). The tagline: "Ask not why you were imprisoned. As why you were set free."

An advertising executive (Josh Brolin) is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and ultimately to an illusive man (Sharlto Copley), who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.

This remake of a 2003 Japanese film of the same title is directed by Spike Lee from an adapted screenplay by Mark Protosevich and (loosely) based on the manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. Oldboy opens in theaters October 25th, 2013. A trailer is expected later this week.

Review: Claire DeWitt and the Bohemian Highway by Sara Gran

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of Claire DeWitt and the Bohemian Highway by Sara Gran. A Claire DeWitt Mystery.

Review summary: The narrative of this novel is comprised of a random stream of (often drug-induced) consciousness on the part of the titular character. There is some measure of continuity to the story, but it's tenuous. It's oddly compelling in a way, but ultimately disappointing because the murder mystery itself is so thinly developed and plotted. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (June 2013)

Publisher synopsis: When Paul Casablancas, Claire DeWitt's musician ex-boyfriend, is found dead in his Mission District home, the police are convinced it's a simple robbery. But Claire knows nothing is ever simple.

With the help of her new assistant, Claude, Claire follows the clues, finding hints to Paul's fate in her other cases — especially that of a missing girl in the gritty 1980s East Village and a modern-day miniature horse theft in Marin. As visions of the past reveal the secrets of the present, Claire begins to understand the words of the enigmatic French detective Jacques Silette: "The detective won't know what he is capable of until he encounters a mystery that pierces his own heart." And love, in all its forms, is the greatest mystery of all — at least to the world's greatest PI.

A Conversation with Thriller Writer Tom Wood

Omnimystery News: Author Interview with Tom Wood
with Tom Wood

We are delighted to welcome novelist Tom Wood to Omnimystery News today.

Tom's latest thriller is The Enemy (Signet; May 2013 mass market paperback and ebook formats).

We recently had the opportunity to talk to Tom about his book and series.

— ♦ —

Omnimystery News: The Enemy is the second book to feature assassin-for-hire Victor. What prompted you to bring him back for a second assignment?

Tom Wood
Photo provided courtesy of
Tom Wood; Photo credit
Michael Hinshelwood

Tom Wood: I don't think I consciously set out to write about a recurring character. I had an idea for my protagonist — Victor, a ruthless professional assassin — and the story I wanted to tell. By the time I finished that first book it seemed obvious that Victor's adventures were not over and I had a strong desire to write what happened to him next. Thankfully, readers wanted to find out too and so a series was born. I don't really set out to either keep Victor unchanged from book to book or to develop him over time. If he grows and changes I want it to be organic and logical, not forced to match a preset agenda.

OMN: We introduced the book as a thriller. Would you agree?

TW: Thriller, definitely. Specifically: action thriller. My books feature lots of peril and excitement.

OMN: If you were tweeting the synopsis of the book, what you would say?

TW: Professional assassin Victor has three dangerous targets to kill, an employer he can't trust, and powerful enemies hunting his every move.

OMN: Describe your writing process for us.

TW: I always start with a rough idea of where I want the book to go and have a few key scenes that I know I'll write. But the plot tends to develop and expand exponentially as I write, and I usually end up with a far longer book than I intended. As for characters, I don't create biographies but I try to have a mental picture of who they are. Not necessarily a picture of what they look like, but of their personalities and goals. Though like the plot, they will develop and change as I write. Sometimes just writing a certain line of dialogue will transform the entire nature of the character.

OMN: How do you go about researching the storylines for your books?

TW: If I haven't got any first-hand experience of what I'm writing about then I'll use the internet and read appropriate books and magazines, but talking with an expert is usually the most fruitful way of learning about something. Technology is usually the hardest area to research and understand, but can also be the most interesting. I'm not sure research is ever exciting — at least in my case — but learning how to crack a safe or how a Stinger missile works isn't exactly dull.

OMN: Tell us about the settings for the books.

TW: My books are set in lots of different places around the world, and though I try to stay faithful to such locations, I'm happy to take the occasional liberty if absolutely necessary. The story is the most important thing, and there's no benefit in being true to a location at the expense of the plot or characters.

OMN: Action thrillers often make for great screenplays. Any thoughts on who you'd like to see play Victor?

TW: People often ask me this question and it's something that I try my best to avoid thinking about as I don't want to picture a specific actor when I'm writing. I see that as an unnecessary restriction to the process. I also don't want to my readers to have their own mental image distorted by me arbitrarily naming an actor to play Victor. That said, some names are often suggested to me by my readers, which I'm happy to share here (in no particular order): Christian Bale, Liev Screiber, Adrien Brody, Michael Fassbender.

OMN: What kinds of questions do you get from readers?

TW: I feel very lucky to have such wonderful readers who take the time to email me or send messages to me through Facebook or Twitter. I love hearing from them and I don't think there are any questions I least enjoy, but as I mentioned earlier I try to avoid answering who I would want to play Victor in a film adaptation — which is probably the question I get asked the most.

OMN: Where might we find you when you're not writing? And do any of your outside activities find their way into your books?

TW: Writing takes up so much of my time and energy that I'm not sure there's any room left over for hobbies! That said I try to keep fit and I enjoy watching boxing — which did find its way into The Enemy: There's a scene where an arms dealer is sparring with a professional boxer.

OMN: What books do you read for enjoyment?

TW: At the moment I'm reading a lot of historical fiction, which is suitably far removed from my own genre. My favorite authors in that genre are: Bernard Cornwell, Giles Kristian and Ben Kane.

OMN: Do you have any favorite series characters?

TW: Everyone loves Jack Reacher and I guess I'm no different. It's very satisfying to follow him as he sets things right and gives the bad guys what they deserve.

OMN: What's next for you?

TW: My third book featuring Victor is called The Game and is out in November.
