A Mitchell Tobin Mystery

A disgraced ex-cop takes a job from a bereaved, gentlemanly mobster.

Six months ago, Mitchell Tobin lost his career — and with it, his identity. An honest cop drummed out of the force because of one terrible mistake, Tobin has spent six months watching his savings dwindle and his family fall apart. But no matter how badly he needs work, he doesn't want anything to do with Ernie Rembeck, a crime boss whose mistress has just turned up dead. The killer can only be someone inside the organization, and Rembeck wants him identified. Tobin agrees, under assurances that nothing illegal will be asked of him, but he soon finds that without a badge, right and wrong are nothing but words.

Mitch Tobin is about to take on every heavy in the New York mob scene. He's finally found a purpose, but his safety is in serious jeopardy.

Telemystery: Declan Hill's The Fix to be Adapted as Crime Drama

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Ineffable Pictures plans to adapt Declan Hill's bestselling non-fiction book The Fix into a crime drama for television. (More details about the book, below.)

"Everyone knows that soccer is far and away the world's most popular sport. However, it wasn't until I read Declan's book that I realized that the criminal aspect surrounding it might be even bigger," said Ineffable Pictures CEO Raphael Kryszek. "This will undoubtedly set the framework for a captivating piece of television."

The Fix: Soccer and Organized Crime by Declan Hill

The Fix: Soccer and Organized Crime
Declan Hill

Author Declan Hill comes face-to-face with the multi-billion dollar illegal Asian gambling industry. Over four years, he interviewed more than two hundred people, including professional gamblers, Mafia hitmen, undercover cops, top-level international soccer players, referees, and officials. He met men who claim they have bribed their way into fixing the results of some of the biggest matches in the sport. Initially very sceptical, Hill travelled across four continents to corroborate their stories. He found soccer leagues where mobsters have fixed more than eighty per cent of the games. But most chilling, he met and then was adopted by a small group of match-fixers.

In The Fix, Hill explains the structure and mechanics of illegal gambling syndicates, what soccer players and referees do (or not do) to affect the outcome of their games, why relatively rich and high-status athletes would fix games, how and why club officials would bribe the opposition and how they get referees "on their side". Perhaps most shocking is Hill's discovery that gambling fixers have successfully infiltrated the game, all the way to the top international matches.

The book, however, is not just about match fixing in soccer, the world's most popular sport. Throughout the text, Hill uses examples from other sports — tennis, hockey, even rowing — to show that the credibility of professional sport now lies on a fragile foundation, and it provides enough hints to suspect that all sports above amateur level should look nervously over their shoulder.

ITV's Miniseries Unforgiven to be Adapted for Film

Mystery, Suspense and Thriller Film News

Christopher McQuarrie will write and direct a film adaptation of the 2009 ITV1 miniseries Unforgiven. This is, according to Deadline, McQuarrie's second time around with the project; in 2010 he was attached to write the script but left to direct Jack Reacher, the screenplay of which he also adapted from Lee Child's novel.

Unforgiven tells the story of Ruth Slater, who has spent the past 15 years imprisoned for the murder of two policemen, and now faces the daunting prospect of rebuilding her life after being irresistibly drawn to the place that haunts her, Upper Hanging Stones Farm. In spite of trying to focus on the future and her new boyfriend Brad, Ruth is unable to forget her past and the sister, Katie, who she was forced to leave behind. Outraged to hear that the woman who killed their father has been released, Kieran and Steve Whelan are eager to seek revenge. Believing that life should mean life, the two brothers decide to take the law into their own hands. But just how far are they capable of going? Can they really do to her what she did to their father? As the details about Ruth's past become known, maintaining a job, friendship and a relationship become increasingly arduous. Ruth soon realizes that the ramifications of her release spread further than she could have imagined, with far reaching implications for everyone involved.

Unforgiven was honored as Best Drama Series by the Royal Television Society in 2009.

There is a magic that occurs when we read and whole new worlds are created and revealed. When the story happens to be a mystery or thriller, there are the added dimensions of a puzzle, the unexpected and conflict. Since Edgar Allen Poe published The Murders in the Rue Morgue in 1841 for the masses the public has been chasing bad guys through untold billions of ink smudged pages and pixilated screens. Growing up with Superman, The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Agatha Christie, it's no surprise that when I turned to writing I naturally leaned toward stories with elements of suspense and danger. I am also an artist and I vaguely remember creating my first "masterpiece" with a cover showing a man with a cape riding a horse. That was done on construction paper with crayons. My elementary grade teacher was gushing. So I've been struggling with this impulse to create fiction for a long time. Somewhere along the way, life got in the way. Now that I'm back to it I feel relieved, like rediscovering a familiar path through the woods after being lost. There is a personal satisfaction and release in building a world of characters and places where adventures unfold, lives and loves flourish, and goodness wins. The ability to share this with readers is all the more rewarding.

With many of my projects and work of art, I've been told that the things I do are complicated and involved. My writing and plot development tends to be the same, and I think that adds to the enjoyment and impact for the reader. Writing to me is like cooking, and the addition of intriguing elements is like adding exotic spice. Double Mayhem has a large dose of action, a bit of humor, historical facts, the paranormal, romantic tension, and yes, a pinch of sex. Because of that, this fictional brew purposefully spans literary genres in that it is a mystery, a spy thriller, and a romance, thus appealing to a broad spectrum of audiences.

Different writers approach the creative process in different ways. Some work from detailed outlines, some just start writing, and some have only the beginning and end in mind. Even though I start with a rough outline, I let the characters and plot evolve, taking me places I did not plan to go. It becomes a discovery for me, which is part of the thrill of writing. It's like reading a mystery, but from the inside out. That was the process with Double Mayhem. As I started introducing characters and writing their dialogue, how they reacted to one another and logically demanded responses from one another led me down avenues I had not anticipated. The family of characters in this Seekers Mysteries debut is diverse and extensive, each with their own quirks and unique histories. Each became real to me, and I could see future books revolving around them. I wanted to know more about them myself, but the book of course had to have an ending. This first saga is more than a simple mystery, a story of a hapless heroine sucked into a vortex of crime; it is a chronicle of beginnings for characters and new worlds.

A Jesse Morgan Mystery
Publisher: Tidal Wave

When Jesse Morgan's boss and best friend died, she inherited Private Spies, a private investigation firm that specializes in missing persons. Unfortunately, she knew little about the business aside from her intensive work on the computer. But if Joey thought she could handle it, she felt obligated to at least give it a try. How hard could it be, right?

So Jesse took on her first case. Very straightforward. This guy is missing, find him. Oh but wait, he also kidnapped his own daughter. Find her too. Still not that hard. Except when she ran his report, the picture she found on his drivers license is of another guy. And when she found a guy who matched the first picture, he had another name. And when she found a girl that looked like the daughter, she didn't match anything. Not good.

Enter a retired police officer named Byron (really?) who says before Joey died, he hired him to work for them. Ok. This might be helpful. But then came a stalker, and a dead guy, a dead duck and an increasing list of incidents that all seem confusing to Jesse. Up to her eyeballs in threats and questions, Jesse's outraged when the woman who hired her decides to fire her. Unbelievable! Unable to stop at that point, Jesse is determined to find the guy and solve the case. If only it was as easy as it sounded.

Scarlett Bernard knows about personal space: step within ten feet of her, and any supernatural spells or demonic forces are instantly defused — vampires and werewolves become human again, and witches can't get out so much as a "hocus pocus". This special skill makes her a null and very valuable to Los Angeles's three most powerful magical communities, who utilize her ability to scrub crime scenes clean of all traces of the paranormal to keep humanity, and the LAPD, in the dark.

But one night Scarlett's late arrival to a grisly murder scene reveals her agenda and ends with LAPD's Jesse Cruz tracking her down to strike a deal: he'll keep quiet about the undead underworld if she helps solve the case. Their pact doesn't sit well with Dash, the city's chief bloodsucker, who fears his whole vampire empire is at stake. And when clues start to point to Scarlett, it'll take more than her unique powers to catch the real killer and clear her name.

Review: Norwegian by Night by Derek B. Miller

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Norwegian by Night by Derek B. Miller.

Review summary: This is most certainly not a mainstream crime thriller. Setting aside the murder of a woman and the arguably illegal abduction of her son by the central character, crime is not the central issue here. And the book is not much of a thriller. To be sure, it's nearly impossible to classify this book. Which to some readers will be its great appeal, a cross-genre, whimsically quirky, novel; to others, it is merely an incoherent mess. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 2 of 5 stars

Norwegian by Night
Derek B. Miller
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (May 2013)

Publisher synopsis: Sheldon Horowitz — widowed, impatient, impertinent — has grudgingly agreed to leave New York and move in with his granddaughter, Rhea, and her new husband, Lars, in Norway: a country of blue and ice with one thousand Jews, not one of them a former Marine sniper in the Korean War turned watch repairman, who failed his only son by sending him to Vietnam to die. Not until now, anyway.

Home alone one morning, Sheldon witnesses a dispute between the woman who lives upstairs and an aggressive stranger. When events turn dire, Sheldon seizes and shields the neighbor's young son from the violence, and they flee the scene. But old age and circumstances are altering Sheldon's experience of time and memory. He is haunted by dreams of his son Saul's life and by guilt over his death. As Sheldon and the boy look for a haven in an alien world, reality and fantasy, past and present, weave together, forcing them ever forward to a wrenching moment of truth.

Telemystery: Starz Announces Series Order for Outlander

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Last Fall we reported that Starz had optioned Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series to develop for television. Today the cable network announced that 16 episodes have been ordered, with filming to begin later this year in Scotland from an adapted storyline by Ronald D. Moore.

"We are thrilled to be bringing Outlander to Starz next year," said Chris Albrecht, CEO of Starz. "Diana has created an incredibly compelling heroine, thrust into a very complex world, not to mention, time. The books weave a fascinating tapestry of history, spirituality, love and honor, not to mention plenty of time travel, sex and warfare. With Diana's stories guiding us and Ron's mastery, we hope to bring Claire and Jamie to life for the millions of fans the world over."

Spanning seven books (to date; the eighth is scheduled to be published in Fall 2013), the "Outlander" series crosses several genres and is centered on the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945, who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser, a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire's heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. More about the first book in the series, below.

The year is 1945. Claire Randall is traveling with her husband when she touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is hurled back in time to a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord 1743. Catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, she soon realizes that an alliance with James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, might be the only way to survive.
