The Apprentice by Tess Gerritsen

The Apprentice by Tess Gerritsen
A Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles Mystery (2nd in series)
Publisher: Ballantine Books

The TNT crime drama Rizzoli & Isles is based on these series characters.

It is a boiling hot Boston summer. Adding to the city's woes is a series of shocking crimes, in which wealthy men are made to watch while their wives are brutalized. A sadistic demand that ends in abduction and death.

The pattern suggests one man: serial killer Warren Hoyt, recently removed from the city's streets. Police can only assume an acolyte is at large, a maniac basing his attacks on the twisted medical techniques of the madman he so admires. At least that's what Detective Jane Rizzoli thinks. Forced again to confront the killer who scarred her — literally and figuratively — she is determined to finally end Hoyt's awful influence … even if it means receiving more resistance from her all-male homicide squad.

But Rizzoli isn't counting on the U.S. government's sudden interest. Or on meeting Special Agent Gabriel Dean, who knows more than he will tell. Most of all, she isn't counting on becoming a target herself, once Hoyt is suddenly free, joining his mysterious blood brother in a vicious vendetta.

Graphic Novel News: Moriarty by Daniel Corey and Anthony Diecidue to be Issued as Deluxe Hardcover

Moriarty Graphic Novel by Daniel Corey and Anthony Diecidue

Image Comics has announced that the Moriarty series of comics will be released as a single, deluxe hardcover volume in May, 2013.

Written by Daniel Corey and Anthony Diecidue and based on a character created by Arthur Conan Doyle, the 9-issue series is divided into two parts: "The Dark Chamber" and "The Lazarus Tree" (already available separately as trade paperbacks).

It is the dawn of World War I, and Sherlock Holmes has been dead for 20 years. Professor James Moriarty is a lost man, but he's called back into the fray when MI5 blackmails him into finding Holmes' long-lost brother, Mycroft. What at first appears to be a routine case leads to a web of intrigue that involves a psychic box and its creator, a woman from Moriarty's past, and a new villain that threatens to be greater than Moriarty ever was.

Last year, Corey announced he was teaming up with Raymond Schnurr to bring the first story arc — "The Dark Chamber" — to the stage as a musical along the lines of Les Misérables, Sweeny Todd and Phantom of the Opera. However, we haven't heard much about this project recently so aren't quite sure at what stage, as it were, it may be in.

The festival opens with another film adapted from a novel, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, with Leonardo DiCaprio as the 1920s millionaire Jay Gatsby, played by Robert Redford in the 1974 version of the film.

As a child, Ali Neuman ran away from home to escape the Inkatha, a militant political party at war with the then-underground African National Congress. He and his mother are the only members of his family that survived the carnage of those years and the psychological scars remain.

Today, Neuman is chief of the homicide branch of the Cape Town police, a job in which he must do battle with South Africa's two scourges: widespread violence and AIDS. When the mutilated corpse of a young white woman is found in the city's botanical gardens, Neuman's job gets even more difficult. He is chasing one false lead after another when a second corpse, again that of a white woman, is found. This time, the body bears signs of a Zulu ritual. A new evil has insinuated itself into this recently integrated city. And a new drug: traces of an unknown narcotic have been found in the blood of both victims.

The investigation will take Neuman back to his homeland, where he will discover that the once bloody killing fields have become the ideal no-man's land for unscrupulous multinationals, and that the apparatchiks of apartheid still lurk in the shadows and the back rooms of a society struggling toward reconciliation.

Review: Murder Below Montparnasse by Cara Black

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Murder Below Montparnasse by Cara Black. An Aimée Leduc Investigation.

Review summary: The storyline in this murder mystery is really quite interesting but takes a long time to get started and is wildly overcomplicated once it does, taking the most serpentine path possible to get from point A to point B. It's a journey worth taking, but does get rather tiring along the way. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

Murder Below Montparnasse Cara Black

Murder Below Montparnasse
Cara Black
An Aimée Leduc Investigation
Soho Crime (March 2013)

Publisher synopsis: When Aimée's long-term partner and best friend René leaves their detective agency for a new job in Silicon Valley, Aimée knows she can handle the extra workload. At least, that what she tells herself. Repeatedly.

But all bets are off when Yuri Volodya, a mysterious old Russian man, hires Aimée to protect a painting. By the time she gets to his Montparnasse atelier, the precious painting has already been stolen, leaving Aimée smelling a rat. The next day, Yuri is found tortured to death in his kitchen. To top it all off, it looks like Aimée isn't the only one looking for the painting. Some very dangerous people are threatening her and her coworkers, and witnesses are dropping like flies. Now Aimée has to find the painting, stop her attackers, and figure out what her long-missing mother, who is on Interpol's most wanted list, has to do with all this — fingers crossed she wasn't Yuri's murderer, despite clues pointing in that direction.

Obviously, René doesn't need to worry. Aimee has things under control.
