Cards & Caravans by Cindy Spencer Pape

Cards & Caravans

The Gaslight Chronicles (5th in series)

Belinda Danvers isn't a witch. But that won't stop them burning her at the stake …

Connor McKay can tell at a glance that Belinda's magickal powers are minimal at best. She can't be guilty of murdering village children. There's something suspicious about her arrest and lightning-quick sentence. Unfortunately, telling anyone how he knows would mean revealing his own powers. He's been sent by the Order of the Round Table to help and he can't just let her die.

Escaping from jail and running from vindictive villagers in her grandfather's steam-powered caravan is more excitement than Belinda's had in years. And despite the danger — or maybe because of it — she loves the time spent with her sexy rescuer. But there's more to his magick than he's letting on …

There's something going on that's bigger than the two of them. It's time for good to make a stand.

A Mind to Kill: The Complete Series

A Mind to Kill
The Complete Series

Philip Madoc delivers an unforgettable performance as brooding detective Noel Bain in this atmospheric Welsh drama. An old-fashioned and kindhearted cop, Bain solves crimes with his unerring instinct, keen intelligence, and passion for defending the innocent. He also struggles to protect his daughter, Hannah (Ffion Wilkins), from the crime-filled world he knows too well.

Set in a Wales more bleak than picturesque, this acclaimed series is known for its gritty realism and no-holds-barred storytelling. The complete collection includes all three series of feature-length episodes.

We've seen — and Mr. E. has reviewed — all three seasons of this series. "The mystery plots are sophisticated and solidly plotted, not so much whodunits but more along the lines of police procedurals. The stories are often grim, the outcomes not always positive — much like real crime in real life." (Read Mr. E.'s reviews of Season One, Season Two, and Season Three.)

Telemystery: Rainn Wilson Cast as Evert Backstrom in CBS Pilot

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

Rainn Wilson (The Office) has been cast to play Evert Backstrom in Backstrom, a television pilot for CBS, based on a character created by Swedish crime novelist Leif G. W. Persson. Bones creator Hart Hanson will write and executive produce.

Stockholm police inspector Evert Bäckström was introduced in 2005 in Linda … som i Lindamordet (Linda … as in the Linda Murder), the first English translation of which was published last month in the UK. We don't have a US publication date, yet.

Linda, as in the Linda Murder by Leif G. W. Persson

Linda, as in the Linda Murder
Leif G. W. Persson
An Evert Bäckström Mystery

In the middle of an unusually hot Swedish summer, a young woman studying at the Vaxjo Police Academy is brutally murdered. Police Inspector Evert Backstrom is unwillingly drafted in from Stockholm to head up the investigation.

Egotistical, vain and utterly prejudiced against everything, Bäckström is a man who has no sense of duty or responsibilty, thinks everyone with the exception of himself is an imbecile and is only really capable of warm feelings towards his pet goldfish and the nearest bottle of liquor. If they are to solve the case, his long suffering team must work around him, following the scant few leads which remain after Backstrom's intransigence has let the trail go cold.

Telemystery: Sherlock Season 3 Episode 1 Title — The Empty Hearse

Sherlock (BBC)

Filming on the third season of Sherlock got underway today, with series co-creator Mark Gatiss tweeting a photo of the clapperboard marking the first take of the first scene of the episode.

He also confirmed the title of the episode: "The Empty Hearse", which has been adapted from the original story "The Adventure of the Empty House". This is consistent with the chronology of the canon, with this being the first story published after Holmes "died" in "The Final Problem", which was the basis for the final episode of Season Two, "The Reichenbach Fall".

Last August co-creator Steven Moffat teased fans with three words that he suggested would be associated with this third season's three episodes. None of the words — "Rat. Wedding. Bow." — seem to us to have an obvious connection to storyline being filmed, but maybe we're just missing something. Moffat later said, however, that the three words "may be misleading, are not titles, are only teases or possibly clues, but might be deliberately designed to get you into a lather."

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Holmes, recently confirmed that there will be a fourth season of the series.

The game is on!

A Robert Langdon Thriller
Publisher: Random House

Adapted for the 2006 film The Da Vinci Code starring Tom Hanks.

While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. While working to solve the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci, clues visible for all to see, yet ingeniously disguised by the painter.

Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion, an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others.

In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless powerbroker who seems to anticipate their every move. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priory's ancient secret, and an explosive historical truth, will be lost forever.

Review: Little Elvises by Timothy Hallinan

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Little Elvises by Timothy Hallinan. A Junior Bender Mystery.

Review summary: What seems to be lacking here in this second book of the series is energy, on the parts of both the character and the narrative. Maybe the problem is one of comparison to the previous book, which had edgier humor, more dynamic action, and fewer predictable twists. It is agreeable entertainment as a stand-alone, but disappointing as a sequel. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

A Junior Bender Mystery
Soho Crime (January 2013)

Publisher synopsis: LA burglar Junior Bender has (unfortunately) developed a reputation as a competent private investigator for crooks. The unfortunate part about this is that regardless of whether he solves the crime or not, someone dangerous is going to be unhappy with him, either his suspect or his employer.

Now Junior is being bullied into proving aging music industry mogul Vinnie DiGaudio is innocent of the murder of a nasty tabloid journalist he'd threatened to kill a couple times. It doesn't help that the dead journalist's widow is one pretty lady, and she's trying to get Junior to mix pleasure with business. Just as the investigation is spiraling out of control, Junior's hard-drinking landlady begs him to solve the disappearance of her daughter, who got involved with a very questionable character. And, worst news of all, both Junior's ex-wife and his thirteen-year-old daughter, Rina, seem to have new boyfriends. What a mess.

This action thriller has much going for it, including a spectacular opening chase sequence. The performances save one are uniformly excellent, the exception being the villain, who I found weakly developed, flat and largely uninteresting. Still, a fine film, one definitely worth seeing.
