Perfect Killer by Lewis Perdue

Perfect Killer
Lewis Perdue
Publisher: Sudden Pacific Publishing

Set against the backdrop of the violent and gothic scenes of the American South, this fact-based thriller begins when a prominent Mississippi civil rights attorney asks renowned neurosurgeon Bradford Stone to help her save the life of a white racist condemned to death for the cold case murder of a black man.

Stone, a former elite Marine Recon operative has no idea that he is about to be dragged through a deadly past he thought he had escaped once and for all.

The mystery centers on a top-secret military project on military head injury cases and which has now used that data to create the ultimate human killing machine.

For more than seventy years, the Pentagon has sought the Holy Grail of combat medicine: a chemical compound that would turn ordinary soldiers into weapons of mass destruction, the Perfect Killers. Now, after decades of covert trial and error which have resulted in troubling side effects such as the My Lai massacre, Enduring Valor is ready to be implemented on a massive scale — despite devastating side-effects.

Before he knows it, Stone himself in the sights of the Project's director, a retired general and war hero turned presidential candidate. To get back his life, and expose the truth, Stone must struggle with the South's racist legacy, the demons of his past and penetrate the very heart of the lethal conspiracy.

Die By Wire by Lewis Perdue

Die By Wire

Publisher: Sudden Pacific Publishing

When guardian sniper Mira Longbow arrives in Amsterdam to take out the head of a global child-smuggling ring, she quickly stumbles across a diabolically creative, high-tech jihad that will bring the West to its knees.

Problem is, she also crosses paths with Jackson Day, an unexpected visitor, and would-be lover from her turbulent past in Iraq.

Day is a deadly effective loner assigned to the Army's Asymmetric Warfare Command whose motto (and his) is "Never Fight Fair."

So, when Day shows up to enlist her gift for languages to decipher a tangle of voices recorded of a high-level terror meeting at a remote Iranian safe house, she wants nothing to do with him or his distractions from her mission.

But, after the heat of their first encounter, they put aside their simmering differences when it's clear that Khan Nasiri — the same wealthy shipping tycoon behind the child bride smuggling operation -- is a terror mastermind who has discovered that every modern fly-by-wire passenger aircraft is a disaster waiting to fall out of the sky.

And Nasiri intends to demonstrate to the world just how easily fly-by-wire can become die-by-wire. Cyber-jihad everywhere, anywhere. Death on demand.

The countdown begins.

And they are the only two people on the planet who can stop it in time.

Catherine Bailey has been enjoying the single life long enough to know a catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic and spontaneous, Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell.

But what begins as flattering attentiveness and passionate sex turns into raging jealousy, and Catherine soon learns there is a darker side to Lee. His increasingly erratic, controlling behaviour becomes frightening, but no one believes her when she shares her fears. Increasingly isolated and driven into the darkest corner of her world, a desperate Catherine plans a meticulous escape.

Four years later, Lee is behind bars and Catherine—now Cathy—compulsively checks the locks and doors in her apartment, trusting no one. But when an attractive upstairs neighbour, Stuart, comes into her life, Cathy dares to hope that happiness and love may still be possible … until she receives a phone call informing her of Lee's impending release. Soon after, Cathy thinks she catches a glimpse of the former best friend who testified against her in the trial; she begins to return home to find objects subtly rearranged in her apartment, one of Lee's old tricks. Convinced she is back in her former lover's sights, Cathy prepares to wrestle with the demons of her past for the last time.

Teaser Poster for Carrie

Carrie (March 2013)

The first teaser poster for the remake of the 1976 thriller Carrie has surfaced (right; click for larger image). The tagline: "You will know her name."

We don't have an official synopsis from the studio yet, though we're assuming it won't stray too far from either Stephen King's novel or the first film. We do know that Chloë Grace Moretz is starring as Carrie White, with Julianne Moore playing her mother; Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie played those parts in the original, both earning an Oscar nomination for their respective performances.

Directed by Kimberly Peirce from an adapted screenplay by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Carrie opens in theaters March 15th, 2013.

Carrie by Stephen King

Carrie
Stephen King

In one way or another, everybody abused Carrie. Her fanatical mother forbade this sixteen-year-old misfit everything that was young and fun. She was teased and taunted by her classmates, misunderstood by her teachers, and given up as hopeless by almost everyone.

But Carrie had a secret: she possessed terrifying telekinetic powers that could make inanimate objects move, a lighted candle fall, or a door lock. Carrie could make all kinds of startling bizarre, and malevolent things happen. And so she did one night, when feeling scorned and humiliated … and growing angrier and angrier … she became the vengeful demon who let the whole town feel her power.

Review: Broken Harbor by Tana French

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Broken Harbor by Tana French. A Dublin Murder Squad Mystery.

Review summary: This part psychological thriller, part police procedural is a solid, if flawed, entry in this series. Beautifully written, the story takes far too long to cover what is, in effect, a narrow, self-contained investigation with just a handful of characters, and concludes on an ambiguous note. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

A Dublin Murder Squad Mystery
Viking (July 2012)

Publisher synopsis: Mick "Scorcher" Kennedy plays by the book and plays hard. That's what's made him the Murder squad's top detective — and that's what puts the biggest case of the year into his hands.

On one of the half-built, half-abandoned "luxury" developments that litter Ireland, Patrick Spain and his two young children are dead. His wife, Jenny, is in intensive care.

At first, Scorcher and his rookie partner, Richie, think it's going to be an easy solve. But too many small things can't be explained. The half dozen baby monitors, their cameras pointing at holes smashed in the Spains' walls. The files erased from the Spains' computer. The story Jenny told her sister about a shadowy intruder who was slipping past all the locks.

And Broken Harbor holds memories for Scorcher. Seeing the case on the news sends his sister Dina off the rails again, and she's resurrecting something that Scorcher thought he had tightly under control: what happened to their family one summer at Broken Harbor, back when they were children.

A Madeline Carter Mystery
Publisher: Mira Books

This is the third mystery in this series.

It's been years since former stockbroker Madeline Carter bothered thinking about her gastronomically gifted ex-husband, Chef Braydon Gauthier. Between quitting her soul-sucking career and discovering what life is like during daylight hours she's been kind of busy. But when Madeline learns Braydon took his own life, she drops everything and hightails it to the funeral.

It doesn't take long to realize Braydon's death is more murder than suicide. Madeline knows her ex would never have prepared himself a poison-laced dinner of duck a l'orange — let alone pair it with a big, beefy Shiraz! The culinary star would have eaten fast food first.

So who's responsible? Madeline definitely has her suspicions, but one thing's clear: in the pressure-cooker world of high cuisine and higher stakes, a reputation is worth killing for.

Take Our Poll: Full or Abbreviated RSS Feed for Omnimystery News

Omnimystery News: Site News

We are planning on making some (minor and mostly behind-the-scenes) changes to our blog come 2013, but one change we're considering may not be so minor.

Over the past few years we've expanded the reach of Omnimystery News into almost all areas of mystery-related or -themed entertainment. As a result, we now average more than ten posts a day, and see that only growing in number in the future. We syndicate our blog via RSS and have thousands of subscribers, for which we are very grateful.

RSS syndication takes two general forms: a summary of our day's posts e-mailed to you overnight; and posts when they are published available within an RSS reader. Both are currently sent as "full", meaning you see everything in the post as it is published. However, we have the option to send abbreviated content, just the first 400 characters or so, unformatted and without images, with the option to click over to the post itself if you're interested in reading more.

Right now we're sending "full" posts via RSS. But we think it might be beneficial, and possibly preferable, to our subscribers to send "abbreviated" posts.

(If you're one of our Twitter followers, you already get a very abbreviated version of our post, just the title as a tweet. That will not change.)

We don't want to make any major changes without your input, so we've placed a poll on our blog's sidebar, asking you to vote for what you would like us to do: Retain the current "full" format in our RSS feeds, or switch over to an "abbreviated" format. You can also vote as having "No opinion".

We would sincerely appreciate if you would take the time to register your vote on how you would like to receive our RSS feed in the future. We will definitely take into consideration your input when we make our decision. In the meantime, we thank you so very much for reading Omnimystery News and for being a subscriber to our RSS feed.
