Mystery Bestsellers for the Week Ending October 05, 2012

Bestselling Crime Fiction: Hardcover Mysteries, Suspense Novels and Thrillers

A list of the top 15 mystery hardcover bestsellers for the week ending October 5th, 2012 has been posted by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books.

We're guessing that had we categorized The Casual Vacancy as crime fiction it would have displaced the stand-alone thriller Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn at the top of the list. (We consider it "literary fiction" so you won't find it here!) Three new titles enter the list (position in parentheses), including one in the top four, a very rare feat, indeed.

The first person they killed was a highway patrolman. The second was a woman during a robbery. Then, hell, why not keep on going?

As their crime spree cuts a swath through rural Minnesota, some of it captured on the killers' cell phones and sent to a local television station, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil Flowers joins the growing army of cops trying to run them down. But even he doesn't realize what's about to happen next.

Live by Night by Dennis Lehane

(8): Live by Night
Dennis Lehane

Boston, 1926. The '20s are roaring. Liquor is flowing, bullets are flying, and one man sets out to make his mark on the world.

Prohibition has given rise to an endless network of underground distilleries, speakeasies, gangsters, and corrupt cops. Joe Coughlin, the youngest son of a prominent Boston police captain, has long since turned his back on his strict and proper upbringing. Now having graduated from a childhood of petty theft to a career in the pay of the city's most fearsome mobsters, Joe enjoys the spoils, thrills, and notoriety of being an outlaw.

But life on the dark side carries a heavy price. In a time when ruthless men of ambition, armed with cash, illegal booze, and guns, battle for control, no one — neither family nor friend, enemy nor lover — can be trusted. Beyond money and power, even the threat of prison, one fate seems most likely for men like Joe: an early death. But until that day, he and his friends are determined to live life to the hilt.

Joe embarks on a dizzying journey up the ladder of organized crime that takes him from the flash of Jazz Age Boston to the sensual shimmer of Tampa's Latin Quarter to the sizzling streets of Cuba.

Harry has come back to prove that Oleg is not a killer.

Barred from rejoining the police force, he sets out on a solitary, increasingly dangerous investigation that takes him deep into the world of the most virulent drug to ever hit the streets of Oslo (and the careers of some of the city's highest officials), and into the maze of his own past, where he will find the wrenching truth that finally matters to Oleg, and to himself.

Telemystery: ABC Orders Killer Women

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

ABC has ordered Killer Women, a crime drama project based on the Argentine series Mujeres Asesinas, which itself is adapted from the trilogy of thrillers by Marisa Grinstein.

It isn't at all clear to us if Mujeres Asesinas, translated as "Killer Women", is non-fiction or fiction. The original books seem to be essentially a collection of short stories, each of which features a different female killer. The drama aired for four seasons in Argentina, winning all sorts of awards.

The project ordered by ABC will be centered on a female Texas Ranger. Modern Family's Sofia Vergara will executive produce a script written by Hannah Shakespeare (The Raven).

The Anatomy of Violence: The Biological Roots of Crime by Adrian Raine

The Anatomy of Violence: The Biological Roots of Crime
Adrian Raine

A leading criminologist, who specializes in the neuroscience behind criminal behavior, Adrian Raine introduces a wide range of new scientific research into the origins and nature of violence and criminal behavior. He explains how impairments to areas of the brain that control our ability to experience fear, make decisions, and feel empathy can make us more likely to engage in criminal behavior. He applies this new understanding of the criminal mind to some of the most well-known criminals in history. And he clearly delineates the pressing considerations this research demands: What are its implications for our criminal justice system? Should we condemn and punish individuals who have little to no control over their behavior? Should we act preemptively with people who exhibit strong biological predispositions to becoming dangerous criminals? These are among the thorny issues we can no longer ignore as our understanding of criminal behavior grows.

Calculating, ruthless, businesslike, and with a shrewd sense of other people's weaknesses, Cogan plies his trade, moving among a variety of hoods, hangers-on, and big-timers, tracking those responsible, and returning "law and order" to the lawless Boston underworld.

Jack Reacher (December 2012)

A new teaser poster with Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher has been released by the studio (right; click for slightly larger image). No tagline. Maybe one isn't necessary.

When a gunman takes five lives with six shots, all evidence points to the suspect in custody. On interrogation, the suspect offers up a single note: "Get Jack Reacher!" So begins an extraordinary chase for the truth, pitting Jack Reacher against an unexpected enemy, with a skill for violence and a secret to keep.

A Jack Reacher Thriller (9th in series)

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me. And sure enough, from the world he lives in — no phone, no address, no commitments — ex-military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. In Lee Child's astonishing new thriller, Reacher's arrival will change everything — about a case that isn't what it seems, about lives tangled in baffling ways, about a killer who missed one shot — and by doing so give Jack Reacher one shot at the truth …

The gunman worked from a parking structure just thirty yards away — point-blank range for a trained military sniper like James Barr. His victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time. But why does Barr want Reacher at his side? There are good reasons why Reacher is the last person Barr would want to see. But when Reacher hears Barr's own words, he understands. And a slam-dunk case explodes. Soon Reacher is teamed with a young defense lawyer who is working against her D.A. father and dueling with a prosecution team that has an explosive secret of its own. Like most things Reacher has known in life, this case is a complex battlefield. But, as always, in battle, Reacher is at his best.

Moving in the shadows, picking his spots, Reacher gets closer and closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. And for Reacher, the only way to take him down is to know his ruthlessness and respect his cunning–and then match him shot for shot …

A Mysterious Review of …

A Cup Full of Midnight by Jaden Terrell. A Jared McKean Mystery.

Review summary: This is an exceptionally well crafted, intricately plotted mystery, with unexpected narrative turns that keep readers both on edge and guessing. Though its final chapters may be considered to be rather bleak, they are touching as well, a strongly written and really quite powerful conclusion to this most remarkable book.
