The Holland Taylor Trilogy by David Housewright

The Holland Taylor Trilogy
David Housewright
The Holland Taylor Mysteries (Books 1 through 3)

Holland Taylor is comfortable in interrogation rooms. For years the cold, dark cells of the Minneapolis homicide squad were his turf, and with the help of his partner he wrung confessions out of countless killers. But that was long ago.

In Penance, Taylor is on the other side of the desk. Tonight he is the suspect.

Taylor's career in the department ended after his wife and daughter were killed in a drunk driving accident. The culprit, John Brown, was sentenced to a measly six years for vehicular manslaughter, and Taylor vowed bloody vengeance in front of open court. After a few months of freedom, Brown is shot dead, and Taylor, now a private investigator, is called in as the obvious suspect. He didn't kill Brown, but he will find out who did — even if it means tearing Minneapolis apart from the inside out.

In Dearly Departed, Holland Taylor discovers a recording made by a woman named Alison Emerton explaining that if she is missing, it is because Raymond Fleck killed her. Fleck, a convicted rapist, lost his job at a kennel after Alison accused him of sexual harassment and stalking. She vanished soon after, leaving behind her wallet, coat, and boots, on a night when twenty-three inches of snow fell on Minneapolis. Her lawyer has hired Taylor to find her. But as Taylor digs into Alison's past, he learns that Fleck was not the only person who wanted her dead.

In Practice to Deceive, Florida widow and retiree Irene Gustafson is rich and alone. Following the advice of Ann Landers, Gustafson hands her money over to an investment manager. The returns are steady until he starts investing in Willow Tree, a low-income housing development on the fringes of the Twin Cities. The money vanishes, and the widow is destitute. That's where Holland Taylor, Minneapolis private detective, comes in. His recently retired parents are her neighbors, and they want Taylor to recover the old lady's money. It seems impossible, but as he investigates Willow Tree he finds a twisted real-estate conspiracy with deep roots in city politics — and a vicious killer hired to protect the secret.

The Jack LeVine Trilogy by Andrew Bergman

The Jack LeVine Trilogy
Andrew Bergman
The Jack LeVine Mysteries (Books 1 to 3)

Stocky, sweaty, and bald, LeVine is a Jewish private detective who makes a living by being polite. But underneath his smile lies a bulldog.

In The Big Kiss-off of 1944, fledgling actress Kerry Lane comes to Jack LeVine when a blackmailer demands a payoff to keep a series of stag films from her past out of the public eye. Lured by long legs and a roll of crisp twenties, LeVine takes Kerry's case. But before he can speak to the blackmailer, the crook turns up dead. As LeVine hunts for Kerry's old films, he finds that the heart of this case is even uglier than greed, lust, or murder. It's politics.

In Hollywood and LeVine, screenwriter Walter Adrian seeks the advice of high school buddy Jack LeVine. Studio execs suspect that Adrian is a Communist, and they're lowballing his salary as a result. Though he insists he isn't a Red, Adrian has no way of proving it. LeVine is broke, and has no sympathy for his wealthy friend, but he agrees to fly west to investigate his old classmate's trouble. When he arrives, Adrian hangs dead from the gallows at the Western set on the Warners' backlot. Behind his friend's death, LeVine finds a shadowy Cold War conspiracy, and a city far darker than anything Hollywood puts on screen.

In Tender Is LeVine, Jack LeVine is just emerging from a vicious funk after the 1948 death of his father. His first client is a German violinist, who visits LeVine out of concern for his maestro, Toscanini, the famous conductor of the NBC Symphony Orchestra. The maestro's memory is slipping, his conducting style has changed, and his eyesight is suddenly vastly improved. The violinist suspects that the conductor has disappeared and been replaced by a double. It's an outlandish suspicion, but LeVine takes the case. After all, somebody has to pay for his new office. Soon enough, LeVine finds out that organized crime is playing the tune …

Cinemystery: James Ellroy's Blood's a Rover Optioned for Film

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

The film rights to James Ellroy's novel Blood's a Rover have been optioned for film.

"My most recent novel is — not surprisingly — also my best," said Ellroy. "The story is no less than the psychic inventory of America from 1968 to 1972. I have no doubt that [producers] Clark Peterson and Vincent Sieber will fashion a splendid motion picture from this noir epic."

Blood's a Rover is the third and final book in the so-called "Underworld USA" trilogy by the author, each featuring triple narration, three characters, which have their own point-of-view in the story. The first two books in the trilogy are American Tabloid (1995) and The Cold Six Thousand (2001).

Martin Luther King assassinated. Robert Kennedy assassinated. Los Angeles, 1968. Conspiracies theories are taking hold.

On the horizon looms the Democratic Convention in Chicago and constant gun fire peppers south L.A. Violence, greed, and grime, are replacing free-love and everybody from Howard Hughes, Richard Nixon and J. Edgar Hoover to the right-wing assassins and left-wing revolutionaries are getting dirty. At the center of it all is a triumvirate: the president’s strong-arm goon, an ex-cop and heroine runner, and a private eye whose quarry is so dangerous she could set off the whole powder keg.

Review: The All-Star Joker by David A. Kelly

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

The All-Star Joker by David A. Kelly. The Ballpark Mysteries.

Review summary: This is an entertaining entry in this series, if not a very clever one, mystery-wise. The kids decide early on who the culprit is, and devote their energies to pinning the blame on him. It might have made for a better story had there been clues for them to follow, leading to the true identity of the "all-star joker". (Click here for text of full review.)

Telemystery: USA Networks Orders Pilot Adapted from Elmore Leonard Short Story

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

USA Network has picked up a project from its sister network NBC, ordering a pilot from the Elmore Leonard short story collection When the Women Come Out to Dance. Reportedly the storyline will center on a Miami businessman who is contemplating a run for political office and tries to increase his chances of being elected by marrying a Columbian woman who is on the run from her troubled past. What starts as a marriage of convenience quickly escalates into much more as his new wife proves to be more resourceful at "fixing" any problem the corrupt, South Miami political scene throws at her husband.

When we first reported on the project a year ago, we couldn't pin down the specific story in the collection from which the pilot will be adapted and still can't. It may be the the title story — we have read that — but it would be a very loose adaptation, indeed. This collection does feature two characters that have already made the transition to television: US Marshal Raylan Givens in Justified and Karen Sisco in the 2003 crime drama Karen Sisco.

When the Women Come Out to Dance by Elmore Leonard

When the Women Come Out to Dance
Elmore Leonard
Short Story Collection

In this short fiction collection, Leonard demonstrates the superb characterizations, dead-on dialogue, vivid atmosphere, and driving plots that have made him a household name — and once again illustrates that the line between the law and the lawbreakers is not as firm as we might think.

Federal marshal Karen Sisco, from the bestselling novel Out of Sight, returns in "Karen Makes Out," once again inadvertently mixing pleasure with business. In "Fire in the Hole," Raylan Givens, last seen in Riding the Rap and Pronto, meets up with an old friend, but they're now on different sides of the law. In the title story, "When the Women Come Out to Dance," Mrs. Mahmood gets more than she bargains for when she conspires with her maid to end her unhappy marriage.

All nine stories are Elmore Leonard at his vivid, hilarious, and unfailingly human best.

Adele to Write, Sing Skyfall Theme Song

Skyfall, 2012

Somewhat unique to this franchise, the theme song for a James Bond film can generate as much attention as — and in many cases, probably be remembered better than the plot of — the film itself.

Long rumored, and now apparently confirmed, Adele will write and perform the theme song for Skyfall. The film has its worldwide premiere in just over a month — it doesn't open here in the US until November 9th — so there isn't much time for the singer/songwriter to get it together. And all in the final weeks (days?) of her pregnancy.

Recent Bond film songs have been less than memorable, but there is certainly some promise for this one.

New US Poster for Skyfall

Skyfall (November, 2012)

A new US poster for the "James Bond" film Skyfall has been released by the studio (right; click for larger image). It's basically a variant of the international posters that have previously been released. It's a dramatic image for the character, and nicely mirrors the "007" logo.

This is the 23rd film to feature 007, and the third with Daniel Craig in the role of James Bond. Craig has been confirmed for at least two more films in the series after this one.

Still no update to the short film synopsis from the studio: "Bond's loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost."

Skyfall opens in theaters November 9th.

Once Upon a Time Season 2 Poster

Once Upon a Time Season 2 (ABC, September 2012)

A new poster for the second season of ABC's Once Upon a Time has been released by the network (right; click for larger image). The tagline: "Magic is coming."

This is Fairy Tale Land. It's filled with magic, monsters and all of the characters we all know from stories growing up. It's real, and so are the people in it. But unlike the "happily ever after" you may have heard about, their stories continued, and The Evil Queen cast a Dark Curse over the land …

This is Storybrooke, a quiet, little, New England town filled with people who go about their everyday lives with no idea who they really are. Storybrooke is a place where magic has been forgotten — but is still powerfully close — and happily ever after seems just out of reach. In order to understand where the fairytale world’s former inhabitants came from, and what ultimately led to the Evil Queen’s wrath, you’ll need a glimpse into their previous lives. But it might just turn everything you’ve ever believed about these characters upside-down.

Once Upon a Time returns on Sunday, September 30th at 8 PM (ET/PT). What a 30-second promo for the series below.
