A Joe Gunther Mystery
Minotaur Books (Trade Paperback)
Publication Date: September 2012
ISBN-13: 978-1-250-00692-9

About Tag Man (from the publisher): Across Brattleboro, Vermont, rich people (some with dark secrets) are waking up in their high security, alarm-equipped homes to find a Post-it note stuck to their bedside tables reading, "You're it." There is little sign of disturbance anywhere, nothing stolen (that anyone admits,) and only a bit of expensive food eaten as a signature. The Press loves the story and dubs the burglar the Tag Man.

But who is he? And what’s he actually doing? In fact, he’s quickly running for his life, for what he discovers in one of these houses appears to be proof of a heinous string of murders. But is it? Joe Gunther, struggling to recover from a devastating personal loss, leads his VBI team to untangle the many conflicting pieces of evidence, while the burglar himself struggles for survival in the no-man’s-land between the police and the villains. With no one knowing what to believe, or who to trust, with Tag Man running for his life in a way he never imagined possible, as no one knows who’s watching as they sleep, or who truly did what …

Elizabeth George's First YA Novel, The Edge of Nowhere

Find mystery books for the young sleuth in your family at First Clues, Mysteries for Kids

A week or so ago when we posted our list of new series and stand-alone mysteries for kids and young adults to be published in September, we inadvertantly omitted the first in a new series by crime novelist Elizabeth George.

Titled The Edge of Nowhere, it introduces teenager Becca King, who has the ability to hear "whispers" — the thoughts of others. The publisher, Viking, describes the book as having "elements of mystery, the paranormal, and romance." The second in the series, The Edge of the Water, is expected late next year.

Corridors of Death
Ruth Dudley Edwards
A Robert Amiss Mystery (1st in series)

Battered to death with a piece of abstract sculpture titled ‘Reconciliation,' Whitehall departmental head Sir Nicholas Clark is claimed by his colleagues to have been a fine and respected public servant cut off in his prime. Bewildered by the labyrinthine bureaucracy of Whitehall, Scotland Yard's Superintendent Jim Milton recognizes a potential ally in Clark's young Private Secretary, Robert Amiss.

Milton soon learns from Amiss how Whitehall works: that it can be Machiavellian and potentially homicidal, that Sir Nicholas was obnoxious and widely loathed, that he had spent the weeks before his murder upsetting and antagonizing family and associates, and that his last morning on earth had been spent gleefully observing the success of his plan to embarrass his minister and his department publicly. And they still need to discover who wielded the blunt instrument.

Murder in Mykonos
Jeffrey Siger
An Andreas Kaldis Mystery (1st in series)

A young woman on holiday on Mykonos, the most famous of Greece's Aegean Cycladic islands, simply disappears off the face of the earth. And no one notices.

When politically incorrect, hot-shot detective Andreas Kaldis is promoted out of Athens to serve as police chief for Greece's island paradise of Mykonos, he's certain his homicide days are over. Murders don't happen in tourist heaven; at least that's what he's thinking as he stares at the remains of a young woman found ritually bound and buried on a pile of human bones inside a remote mountain church.

Teamed with the canny, nearly-retired local homicide chief, Andreas tries to find the killer before the media can destroy the island's fabled reputation with a barrage of world-wide attention on a mystery that's haunted Mykonos undetected for decades.

Just when it seems things can't get any worse, another young woman disappears and political niceties no longer matter. With the investigation now a rescue operation, Andreas finds himself plunging into ancient myths and forgotten island places, racing against a killer intent on claiming a new victim who is herself determined to outstep him.

Please Welcome Novelist Clive Eaton

Omnimystery News: Guest Author Post
by Clive Eaton

We are delighted to welcome novelist Clive Eaton as our guest.

Clive's debut novel is The Pyramid Legacy (CreateSpace, June 2012 trade paperback and ebook formats), "a thriller, but also has a story of love and deceit deeply woven in."

Clive tells us today about the inspiration for the storyline. And he is giving one of our readers a chance to win a copy of the book; details below.

— ◊ —

One question many people have asked me about my first novel is — "What gave you the idea in the first instance?" Of all the questions I get this one is perhaps the easiest to answer. I was inspired by the Great Pyramid of Giza as a child many decades ago. It was as the result of watching a black and white film on the television, the title I sadly forget, with the story line heavily featuring the Pyramids. I remember how a whole domino effect of doors closing within the pyramid managed to trap unsuspecting robbers. It was such a mystery and there were so many unanswered questions.

My interest was further re-kindled in recent years by the actual discovery of a hidden door within the Khufu Pyramid. A team of Egyptologists and engineers looked to find how they could bypass the structure to see what it protected, if anything. Unfortunately, once passed the door they found the answer was indeed, nothing! But that didn't stop my brain going into overdrive with "What if?" scenarios. I wanted a similar door to protect an image, but something exceptionally unique.

In 2009 my wife and I took a trip to Cairo as part of my research for the book. It was only when I was once inside I realised the image had to be something that would cast doubt over the currently accepted belief, which is the Pyramids of Giza were built by the ancient Egyptians. Climbing up into the Grand Gallery I was able to witness the sheer brilliance of its design. Large stones had been cut to millimetre precision and it was impossible to even slide a thin sheet of paper at the point they butted together. How could ancient Egyptians, without modern day tools, have built something of such unimaginable precision?

On the dusty journey back to my hotel, my mind was seeking an image, which could be found in a hidden chamber, and which would cast serious doubt over the origin of the builders. It had to be something which could not be known to ancient Egyptians, and then it struck me. What was it? Well. I guess you are going to have to read the story to find out.

Is there another book after The Pyramid Legacy? Yes, there certainly is. The sequel Operation Stonehenge is well underway with the view to having it completed before the end of this year.

A prominent young Egyptologist is murdered by a colleague, deep within the bowels of the Great Pyramid of Giza. The authorities are keen to cover it up, but they know they can't achieve total closure whilst English robotics engineer, Ben Anderson, remains in possession of a powerful image.

An image, which suggests the Great Pyramid at Giza was not built by ancient Egyptians. What the Egyptian authorities don't know is that unless the true meaning behind the image can be established, along with other images which will later surface, the future of mankind will face the most serious threat imaginable. Anderson manages to escape Egypt at the earliest opportunity, together with his astrophysicist girlfriend, Samantha Gibson, but the authorities are quickly on their tail when it becomes evident they have arrested the wrong person. Keen to establish who really built the Pyramids, Anderson seeks to gain additional proof to support his theory. As he and Gibson begin to discover a series of seemingly disparate clues, they soon realise that everything is far from straightforward.

Whilst seeking additional resources, Gibson is unwittingly embroiled in the internal politics of the US military, with the result that she becomes a pawn in a vicious power struggle involving a corrupt senior officer. Her path crosses that of an ex-lover and her relationship with Anderson stretches to breaking point. As Anderson begins to see Gibson from a totally different perspective, his focus changes, and he pushes himself well beyond the limits of his comfort zone in an attempt to discover the truth.

Gibson is now prepared to do anything to fulfil a lifetime ambition, but as her objective becomes almost within her grasp a virulent virus threatens to stop her … and Anderson has the antidote … together with a totally different agenda. And so an unprecedented race begins to finally reveal the true legacy of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

ITV Legal Thriller Injustice to be Adapted for US Television

Injustice (ITV, Summer 2011)

Dick Wolf (Law & Order) is adapting the UK legal thriller Injustice for US television.

Written by Anthony Horowitz, and airing as a 5-part mini-series during Summer 2011, Injustice stars James Purefoy as William Travers, a criminal barrister who is recovering from a traumatic series of events that have shaken his belief in the legal system.

On the surface, Travers is a picture of success; an accomplished criminal barrister happily living with his wife (played by Dervla Kirwan) in rural Suffolk.

However, Travers is still recovering from events in his past when he is drawn into a case that involves his old friend Martin Newall (Nathaniel Parker), who faces conspiracy and murder charges while at the same time being investigated by a vicious and vengeful detective DS Mark Wenborn (Charlie Creed-Miles).

The project is in its early stages and it's not clear whether Wolf intends to develop the US version as a series or mini-series.

Injustice was recently released on DVD by Acorn Media; we have a copy that we'll be reviewing soon. A trailer for the series can be seen below.

Black Ice
Colin Dunne

This thriller was first published in hardcover by St. Martin's Press in 1987.

If you've never come to in the middle of the night to find yourself approximately halfway between New York and Moscow, right up on top of the world, standing outside a block of flats wearing nothing other than a ladies' silk dressing-robe — and that decorated with large scarlet kisses — allow me to describe the sensation. Confused. That's the word, I think. Confused, and cold around the knees.

Stranded in Iceland, journalist turned spy Sam Craven wakes up to the greatest adventure of his career.

Sent to Reykjavik to track down the model Solrun, in whom British intelligence have taken a sudden interest, Craven finds himself caught up in a vast power-play between two superpowers on the brink of war - and with only his wits to rely on.

Trying to stay alive, and one step ahead of a band of ruthless killers, Sam is skating on black ice. One slip and he's dead.

CBS Orders Pilot for Series based on Beverly Hills Cop

Beverly Hills Cop

CBS has ordered a pilot for a potential drama (comedy?) series adaptation of the film Beverly Hills Cop. And it gets better: Eddie Murphy, who played titular character Axel Foley in three films, is expected to make an appearance in the pilot … as Axel Foley.

The storyline is expected to center on Foley's son Aaron, who has followed in his father's footsteps as a cop taking down the rich and famous of Beverly Hills, but who longs to establish his own identity separate from that of his father.

Shawn Ryan (The Last Resort, The Shield) will write the pilot screenplay, serve as its showrunner, and co-executive produce with Murphy.

First Trailer for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (January 2013)

The first trailer for the horror thriller Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters has been released by the studio (below).

Fifteen years after the traumatic incident involving a gingerbread house, the siblings — played by Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton — have evolved into vengeful bounty hunters dedicated to exterminating witches. Over the years, the siblings became expert hunters, famous for their proficiency at tracking and taking down their prey. Although still recovering from their ordeal, their work is relatively easy as for an unknown reason harmful spells and curses do not work well against them.

The Mayor of Augsburg recruits them to rid the town and nearby forests of an evil sorceress (Famke Janssen) who is planning to sacrifice many local children at the witches' gathering during the upcoming "Blood Moon" night in two days time. To make things worse, the duo also has to deal with the brutal Sheriff Berringer (Peter Stormare), who has taken power in Augsburg and conducts a very indiscriminate witch-hunt of his own.

Directed by Tommy Wirkola from an original screenplay co-written with D. W. Harper, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters opens in theaters January 11th, 2013.

It took me two weeks to watch this sequel to 2009's Sherlock Holmes, ten to fifteen minutes at a time. That statement alone probably says more about my reaction to the film than anything else. The second half is much better than the plodding first half, but overall this is a missed opportunity of unimagined proportions. What should have been a victory lap for all involved after the success of the first film never really makes it past the first turn.
