Elizabeth George's First YA Novel, The Edge of Nowhere

Find mystery books for the young sleuth in your family at First Clues, Mysteries for Kids

A week or so ago when we posted our list of new series and stand-alone mysteries for kids and young adults to be published in September, we inadvertantly omitted the first in a new series by crime novelist Elizabeth George.

Titled The Edge of Nowhere, it introduces teenager Becca King, who has the ability to hear "whispers" — the thoughts of others. The publisher, Viking, describes the book as having "elements of mystery, the paranormal, and romance." The second in the series, The Edge of the Water, is expected late next year.

A Becca King Mystery

Whidbey Island may be only a ferry ride from Seattle, but it's a world apart. When Becca King arrives there, she doesn't suspect the island will become her home for the next four years. Put at risk by her ability to hear "whispers" — the thoughts of others — Becca is on the run from her stepfather, whose criminal activities she has discovered.

Stranded and alone, Becca is soon befriended by Derric, a Ugandan orphan adopted by a local family; Seth, a kindhearted musician and high school dropout; Debbie, a recovering alcoholic who takes her in; and Diana, with whom Becca shares a mysterious psychic connection.
