Thick as Thieves by Peter Spiegelman

Thick as Thieves by Peter Spiegelman
Vintage (Trade Paperback)
Publication Date: July 2012
ISBN-13: 978-1-4000-9705-0

About Thick as Thieves (from the publisher): Carr — ex-CIA — is the reluctant leader of an elite crew planning a robbery of such extraordinary proportions that it will leave them set for life. Diamonds, money laundering, and extortion go into a timed-to-the-minute scheme that unfurls across South America, Miami, and Grand Cayman Island. Carr's cohorts are seasoned pros, but they're wound drum-tight — months before, the man who brought them together was killed in what Carr suspects was a setup. And there are other loose ends: some of the intel they're paying for is badly inaccurate, and one of the gang — lately, Carr's lover — may have an agenda of her own. But Carr's biggest problems are yet to come, because few on his crew are what they seem to be, and even his own past is a lie.

A Hetta Coffey Mystery
Publisher: Treble Heart Books

This is the second mystery in this series.

Miffed that vacation plans with her chronically absent boyfriend Jenks Jenkins have gone awry, Hetta Coffey accepts a job in Baja. So what if she and her friend Jan are spectacularly unqualified to take her yacht on a thousand mile cruise in the eastern Pacific Ocean in the middle of hurricane season? Hiring a handsome, if somewhat fishy captain for the trip might keep them off the rocks, but probably won't do the same for her future with Jenks. Meanwhile, a little eye candy on board can't be all bad.

Hetta's unmanageable independence impels her to tackle the very profitable, if environmentally and politically incorrect project south of the border. True to form, her irreverent nature and disregard for danger soon swamps her in a sea of inconvenient bodies, illegal aliens, a pesky whale, and a menacing Mexican machinator. And without her usual arsenal of firepower.

A Trevor Joseph Mystery
Publisher: Accent Press

Compton Castle is a Victorian psychiatric hospital long overdue for demolition. Its warrens of rooms and acres of grounds, originally designed as a sanctuary for the mentally ill, now provide the ideal stalking ground for a serial killer.

Physically and mentally battered after his last case, Sergeant Trevor Joseph is a temporary inmate — but the hospital loses all therapeutic benefit when a corpse is dug out of a flowerbed. Then more bodies are found; young, female and both linked to the hospital. Everyone within the mouldering walls is in danger while a highly unpredictable malevolence remains at large. And, as patients and staff are interrogated by the police, the apparently motiveless killer watches and waits for the opportunity to strike again …

Review: Going to the Bad by Nora McFarland

Mysterious Reviews: Reviews of New Mysteries, Novels of Suspense, and Thrillers

A Mysterious Review of …

Going to the Bad by Nora McFarland. A Lilly Hawkins Mystery.

Review summary: This is a fast-reading mystery, with a good mix of characters: good guys, bad guys, and the ones that could be either — or both. There's a fair amount of humor here as well, which is used to balance the sometimes dark narrative as Lilly pursues her risky investigation. (Click here for text of full review.)

Our rating: 3 of 5 stars

Teaser Trailer for Ripper Street

Copper (BBC America, August 2012)

A teaser trailer for the BBC One/BBC America co-production of Ripper Street aired yesterday in the UK; we've embedded it below. It is, however, more like a trailer for a trailer, since we've read that the full trailer for the historical crime drama is expected to be released on August 12th; two days from now.

The 8-episode series will focus on the H Division of the Metropolitan police, who had to try to calm a panicked capital after the gruesome Jack the Ripper murders of 1888, as well as searching for the elusive culprit.

We can't nail down a premiere date, either in the UK or US, for the series, though it is expected to be sometime this Fall.

New Poster, Trailer for Crime Thriller Deadfall

Deadfall (December 2012)

A new poster (right; click for slightly larger image) and trailer (below) have been released by the studio for the crime thriller Deadfall.

Siblings Addison (Eric Bana) and Liza (Olivia Wilde) are on the run from a casino heist gone wrong. When a car accident leaves their wheel man and a state trooper dead, they split up and make a run for the Canadian border in the worst of circumstances a near whiteout blizzard. While Addison heads cross-country, creating mayhem in his wake, Liza is picked up by ex-boxer Jay (Charlie Hunnam), en-route for a Thanksgiving homecoming with his parents, June (Sissy Spacek) and retired sheriff Chet (Kris Kristofferson). It’s there the siblings are reunited in a terse and thrilling showdown that pushes the bonds of family to the limit.

Directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky from an original screenplay by Zach Dean, Deadfall opens in limited released December 7th, 2012. (It premiered earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival.)

A Ryan Lock Thriller
Publisher: Sean Black Digital

This is the fourth book in this series, published in hardcover in the UK last week and not yet available in print in the US.

Convicted of a series of horrific crimes against young women in the up-market California town of Santa Barbara, wealthy playboy Charlie Mendez has fled across the US border into Mexico. As one bounty hunter after another meets a grisly end at the hands of the murderous drug cartel his family have hired to keep him safe, it seems that Mendez is one fugitive destined to remain beyond the reach of the law.

Or at least that's how it looks until one determined victim persuades high-end security specialist Ryan Lock and his partner, retired Marine Ty Johnson, to take on the case.

Plunged into a nightmare world where no one can be trusted, least of all the authorities, the two men discover a city more deadly than any war zone. Worse still, when an attractive young American tourist is snatched from the streets, it appears that Mendez has returned to his old ways. But in order to stop him before he claims another victim, will Lock and Ty have to pay the Devil's Bounty?
