Adapted from the popular "Stephanie Plum" mysteries by Janet Evanovich, this film is a prime example of why so many viewers believe they could make movies better than the so-called — or self-proclaimed — professionals. Or maybe it really does take talent to make a film this bad.

Savages Interrogation Videos, Week Three

Savages, adapted from the crime novel by Don Winslow (2012)

With less then two weeks to go before Savages opens in theaters, the studio has released its third week of "interrogation videos".

Rather than post them individually here, we're providing a link to the Savages Movie YouTube Channel, where you can watch them all — 15 to date — if you're so inclined. (We thought this was a clever marketing idea at first, but the concept seems to be quickly wearing thin.)

Savages is adapted from the crime thriller of the same title by Don Winslow and is directed by Oliver Stone from a screenplay co-written with Winslow and Shane Salerno. It opens in theaters July 6th.

The Screwball King Murder by Kin Platt

The Screwball King Murder by Kin Platt
Publisher: Prologue Books

About The Screwball King Murder (from the publisher): Big, brash, good-looking Hondo Kenyon is one of the Los Angeles Dodgers' best pitchers, a southpaw screwballer with the necessary skills and fastball to keep the opposition from tearing his head off, and the team is counting on the ex-small town Pennsylvania boy for help in their pennant run. On the other hand, Kenyon rates as a screwball in more ways than one. He has a long track record as a scoring jock with the ladies and his antics on or off the field are flamboyant and daffy, executed with lunatic fervor, sometimes funny of bordering on the ludicrous, always certain of coverage by the media.

With a reputation like that, it's no big surprise to a lot of people when Hondo turns up dead in the electrically charged water of a condominium swimming pool. Slip Masters, the team's public relations man, calls on his private investigator friend Max Roper to look into the case and find out for sure whether it was a legit accident or perhaps a crafty and ingenious murder. The Los Angeles cops have crossed off Hondo's death as a weird accident, but Slip isn't so sure. Neither is Max Roper, especially when he gets in closer and starts kicking things around and his investigations turn up some odd circumstances and a string of other murders. As Detective Lieutenant Camino of Homicide says, “On a Roper case they die on the hour, like flies. Death follows Max like a plague."

Roper has plenty of leads to follow: disgruntled ballplayers, jealous boyfriends, discarded lovers, the dead man's new-breed agent, a psychiatrist, a pool-maintenance person, a hippie plastic surgeon, condominium neighbors, some gangland types, a rock musician and a pineapple heiress ex-wife, among others. His travels take him from the baseball locker room to the seedy areas of Venice, a factory turned nightclub, exclusive watering holes, a chic tennis club, a new high-rise office complex—in short, a cross section of Los Angeles. Along the way to solving the case, Roper get shot at, arrested, beaten up, held at gunpoint and hit over the head, not necessarily in that order.

Mark Williams Cast as Father Brown in New BBC Crime Drama

The Complete Father Brown Mysteries Collection by G. K. Chesterton

Late last year BBC commissioned a 10-episode crime drama based on the character of Father Brown, an amateur sleuth created by crime novelist G. K. Chesterton.

Now we're learning (via In Reference to Murder) that Mark Williams — Arthur Weasley in the "Harry Potter" films — has been cast as Father Brown. Sorcha Cusack will play his housekeeper.

Chesterton wrote 52 short stories featuring the parish priest — a short, stumpy Catholic priest, formerly of Cobhole in Essex, and now working in London — which were collected into a number of volumes that were published between 1911 and 1935. The character has been played in film and on television by numerous actors, but possibly the best known is Kenneth More's portrayal in a 13-episode British TV series, with each episode based on a short story by Chesterton. A pilot for a US crime drama, Sanctuary of Fear with Barnard Hughes as Father Brown living in Manhattan, aired in 1979 but was not developed further.

Filming has begun in the Cotswolds. Father Brown will air on BBC One in early 2013.

Damages: Season Four, a Telemystery Crime Series

Glenn Close stars as high-powered attorney Patty Hewes — a role for which she has won two Emmy Awards — in Damages.

Two years after the Tobin case, Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) has moved on with her life. When she discovers her high school sweetheart has been through a traumatic experience while working for High Star, a private security firm hired by the U.S. government to carry out special missions in Afghanistan, she suspects foul play and asks Patty for help. Patty knows that trying a case against High Star can make Ellen's career. Or ruin it.

John Goodman stars this season as Howard Erickson, the CEO of the company being sued.

Damages: Season Four is available on DVD and consists of episodes that originally aired on DirecTV during the summer of 2012. The fifth and final season of the series premieres July 11th.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent: Season Seven, a Telemystery Crime Series

Squad Detectives Robert Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio), Alex Eames (Kathryn Erbe), Mike Logan (Chris Noth) and Megan Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson) are back for another season of looking through the window of the criminal mind in Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

The Seventh Year includes episodes featuring high-profile criminal cases ripped from contemporary headlines. Investigations range from the murder of a modern-day pirate to the execution of three college freshmen and Goren going undercover at a mental hospital.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent: Season Seven is available on DVD, Amazon Instant, and iTunes, and consists of episodes that originally aired on USA Network — its first season on the NBC-owned cable channel — during the Fall of 2007 and Summer of 2008.

— ◊ —

Poirot: Series Five, a Telemystery Crime Series

David Suchet returns as Agatha Christie's peerless Belgian privated detective Hercule Poirot in Poirot.

Poirot calls upon his famous little grey cells to crack cases that no one else could, aided by cohorts Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser), Chief Inspector Japp (Philip Jackson), and Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran). The elegant world of 1930s Europe sparkles anew in these remastered adaptations, with guest stars including Anna Chancellor, Hermione Norris, and Jeremy Northam.

Poirot: Series Five is available on DVD and Blu-ray disc and consists of eight episodes that originally aired in their original broadcast order on ITV in early 1993.

— ◊ —

Foyle's War: The Best of Foyle's War: Michael Kitchen's Favorite Episodes, a Telemystery Crime Series

Also this week is a collection of episodes specifically selected by Michael Kitchen from the first six seasons of the series, who brilliantly plays DCI Christopher Foyle in Foyle's War.

Created by crime novelist Anthony Horowitz and set against the backdrop of World War II, this award-winning British series is a favorite with mystery buffs. Foyle is a methodical detective chief superintendent investigating crimes that plague his once quaint English coastal community.

We have seen every episode of this series — at least twice — and highly recommend it.

And the best news yet is that it isn't over. ITV has confirmed it has commissioned three more episodes to air in 2013.

Foyle's War: The Best of Foyle's War: Michael Kitchen's Favorite Episodes is available on DVD and consists of the following episodes: "The German Woman", "Eagle Day", "Fifty Ships", "Among the Few", "The French Drop", and "Bad Blood".

A Dangerous Harbor by R. P. Dahlke

A Dangerous Harbor by R. P. Dahlke
Publisher: Dead Bear Publishing

About A Dangerous Harbor (from the publisher): Bleary-eyed and sleep deprived after a long overnighter into Mexico, solo sailor and SFPD police detective, Katrina Hunter, thinks the mermaid twenty yards behind her thirty-two foot Westsail is nothing more than a sailor’s hallucination But everything she knows about floaters convinces her to turn her boat around for another look.

Now, alone and isolated in the Mexican port’s police station for six hours she’s convinced that reporting a floater to authorities was a mistake. Even the arrival of a handsome, if somewhat dour, Mexican/Italian investigator does nothing to dispel her growing anxiety that she’s about to be charged with the murder.

Chief Inspector, Raul Vignaroli, is as surprised by the attractive solo-sailor as he is to find that she’s a respected member of the San Francisco police force, and after some well-placed phone calls he’s sure that he’s found the perfect partner to help him solve a murder, if not the cure for his broken heart.

Released, she's free to go. But leaving the police station hits a snag when two policemen march in, dragging a listless prisoner between them. But before Katy can dodge them for the exit, the prisoner raises his head and a startling pair of aquamarine eyes meet hers.

He straightens his back, wincing at the angle of his cuffed wrists. "What the … Whisper?"

Suddenly, the sound of the ceiling fan is terribly loud. Blood pounds in her ears, her mouth goes dry, her palms are damp and her feet are nailed to the floor. In a knee jerk reaction, she hisses, "Don’t call me that!"

The Test by Patricia Gussin
Publisher: Oceanview Publishing

About The Test (from the publisher): Renowned philanthropist and billionaire Paul Parnell had reached the pinnacle of monetary success, but not without cost. Had he put too much emphasis on work and spent too little time with his family?

Determined to leave something far more valuable than money to his six children, Paul instructs his lawyers to create an unusual last will and testament. This unorthodox will, which stipulates that the lion's share of Paul's two billion dollar estate be given to the heirs who pass "the test", was Paul's last hope of creating an enduring legacy by inspiring his children to give back to society and embrace a code of moral values.

The six children — Rory, Frank, Dan, Monica, Carla and Ashley — have only one year to make a difference. But what a difference one year will make. Before these six very different siblings can complete the test, they'll be forced to face their personal demons and the incredibly evil influence that could claim one of their own.

Me and the legendary Zimmerman twins — it's a friendship made in geek heaven. And it all started back when I worked for the NSA …

My best friend Basia dragged me to the beach for her idea of a vacation. All those annoying people, sand in embarrassing places — not exactly R & R for a girl who doesn't like the sun, the ocean or bathing suits. I couldn't wait to get back to work.

But things started looking up when I ran into Elvis and Xavier Zimmerman. We discovered we had a lot in common: gaming, anchovies, hacking. After that, the vacation was perfect--until I accidentally broke some poor guy's fingers. Then Broken-Fingered Guy disappeared, and things got really dicey. With the Secret Service and a bunch of thugs suddenly after me, all I wanted was to solve the mystery and enjoy what was left of my vacation — preferably alive.

But it's true what they say, there's no rest for the wicked. We'd barely unpacked when the maid started having dreams of being tortured on the rack--dreams my intuition tells me are something more than your average terrifying nightmare. After all, we are in the land of the infamous inquisition, and she does have those unexplained marks …
