Death on a High Floor by Charles Rosenberg

Death on a High Floor by Charles Rosenberg
Publisher: Sliding Hill Press

About Death on a High Floor (from the publisher): When much-despised Marbury Marfan senior partner Simon Rafer turns up dead, with an ornate dagger buried between his shoulder blades, it comes as a surprise to no one. Rafer had recently been on the warpath, clearing out the "dead wood" partners from the firm, not to mention any associate who dared cross him. A thousand attorneys, scattered across four continents, had good reason to want Rafer in the ground, but homicide Detective Spritz has his eye trained on only one — senior partner Robert Tarza, with his shadowy connection to a rare and infamous ancient coin.

Robert and his friend and colleague —and maybe a bit more — Jenna are soon forced to play detective themselves, in a race to find the real killer or killers before Spritz assembles what looks to be an airtight case. But in the end, only Jenna's trial skills will stand between Robert and a free room at San Quentin.

Chequered Justice by John Bartlett

Chequered Justice by John Bartlett
Publisher: Amazing Journeys

About Chequered Justice (from the publisher): Will Middleton lives for motor racing. More than just a sport, more than a hobby, it's his first love, his livelihood, and the centre of all his dreams. Thatcher's Britain is in meltdown, yet despite the deepening recession, Trans-Atlantic, his new racing team, has just pulled off a major coup — sponsors are queuing up, nothing can go wrong now, surely.

The police raid comes out of the blue. Will is questioned under caution and charged with fraud, and finds himself in a Kafkaesque world where his guilt appears to have been decided in advance. How could a riding accident, an insurance claim, a bounced cheque, and a brief moment of temptation all converge into such a nightmare?

Even as his legal team fights for his acquittal, Will knows in his heart that there is a conspiracy, and the roots of it lie deep in the ancient secret society of the Masons. Trans-Atlantic becomes a distant memory as Will encounters a much darker side of life and leaves the glamorous world of motor racing far behind.

Nominees for the 2012 Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction Announced

Mystery Book Awards

The nominees for the Harper Lee Prize for Legal Fiction have been announced by the University of Alabama School of Law and the ABA Journal. This award is new to us, though strictly speaking the winner doesn't have to be a novel of suspense or legal thriller. The inaugural award in 2011 went to John Grisham for his novel The Confession. This year's winner, selected from the finalists below, will be announced in August and honored at a ceremony in September. The selection committee includes: Novelist Linda Fairstein; Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice; Novelist Lisa Scottoline; NPR Legal Affairs Correspondent Nina Totenberg; and FOX News Political Analyst Juan Williams.

The Fifth Witness by Michael Connelly
Murder One by Robert Dugoni
Breach of Trust by David Ellis

(Hat tip to CrimeSpree Magazine — who heard about it from Once Upon a Crime — for alerting us to this award.)

Amazon's Big Deal, 400 Kindle Books $3.99 or Less, is Back!

Amazon Kindle Book Sale: The Big Deal

Earlier today we provided an update to our Kindle Mysteries for $2.99 or less page, and noted at the time that there was an unusually large number of books that fit the parameters.

There is a good reason why; mystery solved, as it were!

The Big Deal is back, now through June 24th, 2012. 400 Kindle ebooks priced $3.99 or less.

Amazon has conveniently sorted the titles by price — $0.99, $1.99, $2.99, and $3.99 — but we've taken that a step further and added the "mystery" keyword to these links: $0.99 mysteries, $1.99 mysteries, $2.99 mysteries, and $3.99 mysteries.

Not unexpectedly, there is considerable overlap between what we posted earlier today and the books listed in The Big Deal. But there are some pleasant surprises as well, books we missed during our early morning scan. If you're looking to stock up on some summer reading at great prices, this is a terrific place to start.

Important Note: The books on these lists are only available at these special prices through June 24th, 2012.

Forensic Firsts Premieres June 17th on Smithsonian Channel

Forensic Firsts (Smithsonian Channel, 2012)

Forensic Firsts, a new series on the Smithsonian Channel, premieres tomorrow, Sunday June 17th, 2012 at 9 PM (ET/PT). (It will repeat at midnight and again at 8 PM (ET/PT) on Monday.)

It's harder to get away with murder. Today, detectives are convicting more criminals than ever before, thanks to forensic science. Fingerprints, bones, even insects, are now forms of indisputable evidence … but that wasn't always the case. Revisit history's dramatic murder cases and see how forensic tools are changing crime solving.

Watch a sneak peak for the series below. And if you can't wait to watch it tomorrow, the entire first episode is available online at the Smithsonian Channel website.

But there's more! A game based on the series, The Deadeye Murders, is also available to play. A hiker shot dead in Colorado. A female jogger found dead in Utah. Then three more deaths: Montana, Oklahoma and Idaho. Each murder took place outdoors. Each victim was killed by a single bullet. It appears to be the work of a serial killer whom investigators have dubbed the Deadeye Killer. Those bullets are the case's only evidence. Until now …

The Bureau chief is demanding results by the end of the month. That give you 25 days. It's your move. Visit the game website to play.
