A Game of Thrones Graphic Novel Publishes Next Month; EW has an Excerpt

A Game of Thrones (The Graphic Novel): Volume One

Next month, the first volume in the A Game of Thrones Graphic Novel series will be published and EW's Shelf Life has an excerpt from it.

Adapted by Daniel Abraham from a story by George R. R. Martin and with art by Tommy Patterson, this volume includes the first six issues of the graphic series that were issued monthly beginning last September. (The sixth issue comes out at the end of February and EW's excerpt includes pages from it.)

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King's Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert's name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen's brothers Jamie and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

We've collected the covers of the first six issues below. The series continues with the seventh issue, which is scheduled to be on sale in April 2012.

Kill Shot by Vince Flynn

Entering the list at number 10 is Kill Shot, the 12th thriller featuring Mitch Rapp by Vince Flynn.

In the year since the CIA trained and then unleashed him, Mitch Rapp has been steadily working his way through a list of men, bullet by bullet. With each swift and untraceable kill, the tangled network of monsters responsible for the slaughter of 270 civilians in the Pan Am Lockerbie attack become increasingly aware that someone is hunting them. Rapp is given his next target, and finds the man asleep in his bed in Paris. In the split second it takes the bullet to leave Rapp's silenced pistol, the trap is sprung and he finds himself in the fight of his life.

The next morning, nine bodies are discovered in one of Paris's finest hotels — among them the Libyan oil minister. Back in Washington the finger-pointing begins in earnest as no one wants any part in what has become an international crisis and potential embarrassment for the CIA. Rapp's handlers have only one choice — deny any responsibility for the incident and pray that their newest secret weapon stays that way.

Rapp must avoid capture or die quietly. One person in the group, however, is not prone to leaving such important things to chance. Rapp has become a liability, and Stan Hurley will not allow Rapp to be taken alive by the French authorities, even if it means killing him. Operating on his own and outside the control of his handlers, it will soon become clear that nothing is more dangerous than a wounded and cornered Mitch Rapp.

Left for Dead by J. A. Jance

Finally, new at number 13 is the 7th mystery featuring Ali Reynolds, Left for Dead by J. A. Jance.

When Santa Cruz County deputy sheriff Jose Reyes, Ali's classmate from the Arizona Police Academy, is gunned down and left to die, he is at first assumed to be an innocent victim of the drug wars escalating across the border. But the crime scene investigation shows there's much more to it than that, and soon he and his pregnant wife, Teresa, both fall under suspicion of wrongdoing.

Ali owes Reyes a debt of gratitude for the help he gave her years earlier when she was dealing with a troubled friend. When she's summoned to his bedside at Physicians Medical Center in Tucson, it's impossible for her to turn away. And knowing Reyes as well as she does, Ali finds it hard to believe that he's become mixed up in the drug trade, despite evidence to the contrary. Upon arriving at the hospital, Ali finds that her good friend, Sister Anselm, is there, too — working as a patient advocate on behalf of another seriously injured victim, an unidentified young woman presumed to be an illegal border crosser, who was raped and savagely beaten.

Ali becomes determined to seek justice in both cases and secure safety for both victims. Together with Sister Anselm and a conscientious officer who won't let the case drop despite pressure from above, Ali digs for clues to find the true culprits.

Copper (BBC America)

Production has begun in Toronto on the upcoming BBC America crime drama Copper. Ten one-hour episodes are being filmed.

Set in 1860s New York City, Copper stars Tom Weston-Jones as Kevin Corcoran, an intense, rugged Irish-American cop working the city's notorious Five Points neighborhood. Corcoran is struggling to maintain his moral compass in a turbulent world, while on an emotional and relentless quest to learn the truth about the disappearance of his wife and the death of his daughter. His friendship with two Civil War compatriots — Robert Morehouse (Kyle Schmid), the wayward son of a wealthy industrialist; and Matthew Freeman (Ato Essandoh), a physician who secretly assists Corcoran with his work — takes him to the contrasting worlds of elegant Fifth Avenue and an emerging black community in rural northern Manhattan. The three men share a secret from their experience on the battlefield that inextricably links their lives forever.

Christina Wayne, President, Cineflix Studios, said: "Copper brings together a team that is truly first class — it is a gripping and fascinating story being told by some of television's most creative voices," said Christina Wayne, President, Cineflix Studios, which is co-producing the series with BBC America. The Silk Train Murder by Sharon Rowse

The Silk Train Murder by Sharon Rowse
A John Lansdowne Granville Mystery
Publisher: Three Cedars Press

About The Silk Train Murder (from the publisher): At the turn of the last century, sleek liners carried a fortune in silk from the Orient to Vancouver. The costly material, insured by the day, was rushed to New York in specially designed silk trains, which became the target of every crook across the continent.

Hungry and broke, adventurer John Lansdowne Granville takes a job guarding silk trains, along with his friend and fellow gold-hunter Sam Scott. When they stumble on a gangster’s corpse, Scott is arrested for murder.

Granville’s hunt for the real killer takes him to the seedy side of Vancouver; to burlesque halls, gambling joints and down along Dupont Street — two blocks of brothels and opium dens along the reeking mudflats. He finds allies in Emily Turner, the emancipated daughter of a very Victorian father and in young would-be train robber Trent Davis.

Can Granville survive the dark side of the city and find the answers he needs in time to save his friend?

New Four-Book Series of Lemony Snicket Books to be Published

Lemony Snicket, All the Wrong Questions

Little, Brown Books for Young Readers today announced an autobiographical series of four books to be written by Lemony Snicket (a pseudonym of Daniel Handler). The first in this series of "All the Wrong Questions" books, Who Could That Be At This Hour?, will be published in October 2012.

"We are thrilled to be publishing this compelling new series by Mr. Snicket, which will at long last reveal the renowned author's mysterious past," said Megan Tingley, Senior Vice President and Publisher at Little, Brown BFYR.

"These books are questionable and contain questions," added Mr. Snicket through his representative. (Due to the world-wide web of conspiracy which surrounds him, Mr. Snicket rarely communicates directly with the general public.) "I, for one, question why anyone would be interested in reading them."
