The Daily Mail Begins Serialization of Lost Agatha Christie Poirot Story Today

Agatha Christie

Unseen for 60 years, the Daily Mail begins today the serialization of a lost short story by Agatha Christie featuring her Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. Titled "The Capture of Cerberus" (which was also the title the author used for another, completely different story published in 1947), it features a Russian femme fatale, a crazed tyrant, and an assassination that shakes the world.

Her story notes had lain undiscovered for decades, gathering dust in a battered cardboard box. There were shopping lists and jottings, hastily scribbled notes, and page after page of virtually indecipherable handwriting in blue-lined notebooks. But author and dedicated Christie enthusiast John Curran painstakingly threaded together the notes and handwritten ingredients of an unseen story that eventually became a typed script.

The story is unusual in that Christie ventures into (then) contemporary politics, surely one of the reasons the story wasn't accepted for publication at the time, and it includes a hint of sex: Poirot is stirred into excitement by feminine beauty.

Curran writes of his discovery in a new book, Agatha Christie's Secret Notebooks: Fifty Years of Mysteries in the Making, to be published in the UK next month. In the meantime, visit the Daily Mail to read a serialized version of "The Capture of Cerberus" now.

Mystery Book Review: Leaden Skies by Ann Parker

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of Leaden Skies by Ann Parker. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

Review: Former President Ulysses S. Grant's visit to the mining town of Leadville, Colorado, sets off a cascade of events that start with the murder of a prostitute in the town's "red light" district in Leaden Skies, the third mystery in this series by Ann Parker.

The dead woman is Lizzie, one of the girls who worked for Florence "Frisco Flo" Sweet, a woman striving to provide exclusive and discreet services for discriminating clients willing pay a little more than what her competitors are charging. Lizzie didn't quite fit in, being a little too forward and a little too indiscreet, but it is still a shock when she turns up dead. Meanwhile, Silver Queen Saloon owner Inez Stannert, concerned about the future of her establishment, strikes a private deal with Flo that should benefit both parties. But there are other secrets in this small town and clearly someone is afraid one of them will be exposed. Inez believes she must solve the mystery of Lizzie's death lest her own secret arrangement become public knowledge.

Leaden Skies seems to have all the right ingredients for a rousing mystery yet in the end it seems incomplete, somewhat unsatisfactory. The characters are interesting and well drawn, the sense of time and place outstanding. The murder of Lizzie is well staged and a credible list of suspects presented. The narrative is colorful and entertaining, and exceptionally well written. And yet there isn't a sense of urgency or suspense, of engaging the reader in the investigation as to who murdered Lizzie and why.

There's really quite a lot here to appeal to mystery readers, with its historical background, colorful characters, and well plotted story, but Leaden Skies is ever so slightly disappointing nonetheless.

Special thanks to Poisoned Pen Press for providing an ARC of Leaden Skies for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): In the summer of 1880, the siren song of a lucky silver find in the mining boomtown of Leadville, Colorado, isn't the only thing that leads folks into temptation. Although possible investment in Leadville's silver mines is a main reason that former president and Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant is now touring this city at the top of the Rockies, others in his retinue and in town are enticed by other visions. Political aspirations fuel the dreams of young John Quincy Adams Wesley and his mother, while itinerant fire insurance mapmaker Cecil Farnesworth struggles against the seductive call of State Street, Leadville's red-light district.

As part owner of the Silver Queen Saloon, Inez Stannert has often observed the ruination that comes from yielding to temptation. Still, that knowledge hasn't stopped Inez from taking Reverend Justice Sands as her lover, in the absence of news of her missing husband. Nor does it stop her from striking a backroom deal with upscale brothel madam Frisco Flo, a deal that Inez gambles will make her financially independent.

But when the body of Lizzie, one of Flo's women, is discovered and Inez learns that Flo has another silent business partner, whose identity she will not divulge, Inez begins to have second thoughts. Inez, in a race against time to untangle the dealings of the high and the low during Grant's visit, must also face her own demons from the past, even as she fights to save her reputation and her life.

Paramount Moves Release Date of Shutter Island to February 2010

Shutter Island

Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Paramount is pushing back the release of Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island from November 2009 to February 2010, effectively eliminating it from any award consideration this year. The reason given: Paramount can't afford the tens of millions of dollars needed to promote the movie at this time. Also, star Leonardo DiCaprio won't be available to promote the film this fall.

Shutter Island is adapated from the thriller of the same name by Dennis Lehane. The film takes place in the year 1954 with U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and his new partner, Chuck Aule (played by Mark Ruffalo) arriving on Shutter Island, home of Ashecliffe Hospital for the Criminally Insane, to investigate the disappearance of a patient. Multiple murderess Rachel Solando is loose somewhere on this remote and barren island, despite having been kept in a locked cell under constant surveillance. As a killer hurricane bears relentlessly down on them, a strange case takes on even darker, more sinister shades -- with hints of radical experimentation, horrifying surgeries, and lethal countermoves made in the cause of a covert shadow war. No one is going to escape Shutter Island unscathed, because nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. But then neither is Teddy Daniels.

Mystery Bestsellers for August 21, 2009

Mystery Bestsellers

A list of the top 15 for the week ending August 21, 2009 has been posted on the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books website.

Just a bit of shuffling among the top 7 bestsellers this week with The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson retaining the top spot again this week. One new title and two that debuted last week move into the top 15 this week.

The Eleventh Victim by Nancy Grace

Moving up 16 places to number 8 is The Eleventh Victim, the debut thriller by Atlanta Fulton County District Attorney Nancy Grace. As a young psychology student, Hailey Dean's world explodes when Will, her fiancé, is murdered just weeks before their wedding. Reeling, she fights back the only way she knows how: In court, prosecuting violent crime ... putting away the bad guys one rapist, doper, and killer at a time. But dedicating her life to justice takes a toll after years of courtroom battles and the endless tide of victims calling out from crime scene photos and autopsy tables. Just as she grows truly weary, a serial killer unlike any other she's encountered begins to stalk the city of Atlanta, targeting young prostitutes, each horrific murder bearing his own unique mark. This courtroom battle will be her last. Hailey heads for Manhattan to pick up the pieces of the life she had before Will's murder, training as a therapist. In a vibrant new world, she finally leaves her ghosts behind. But then her own clients are brutally murdered one by one by a copycat using the same M.O. as the Atlanta killer she hunted down years before. As the body count rises across Manhattan, Hailey is forced to match wits not only against a killer, but the famed NYPD. Unless she returns to her former life and solves the case, still more innocent people will die at the hands of a killer who plans to get her, before she can get him!

Blindman's Bluff by Faye Kellerman

Jumping from 26 to 13 this week is 18th mystery in the Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus series, Blindman's Bluff by Faye Kellerman. As a lieutenant in the LAPD, homicide detective Peter Decker doesn't get many calls at 3 a.m. unless a case is nasty, sensational—or both. Someone has broken into the exclusive Coyote Ranch compound of billionaire developer Guy Kaffey and viciously gunned him down, along with his wife and four employees. A well-known figure on both the business and society pages, Kaffey, with his sons and his younger brother, Mace, built most of the shopping malls in Southern California and earned a reputation for philanthropy, donating millions to worthy causes. It doesn't take long for Peter, his trusted detectives Scott Oliver and Marge Dunn, and the rest of his homicide team to figure out that the gruesome killings must be an inside job. Things become even more entangled when they discover that Kaffey's largesse had included organizations that extended second chances to delinquents, many of whom Kaffey had hired for his personal security. But was the job pure murder/robbery or something even more twisted? A developer of Kaffey's magnitude doesn't make billions without making more enemies with blood grudges. With leads taking the team across L.A., up and down the Golden State, and into Mexico, Decker is plenty busy—and plenty thankful not to have to worry about his wife, Rina Lazarus, getting caught up in this deadly case. Rina is out of harm's way, serving on a jury at the courthouse. But then a chance encounter with a court translator who needs her help leads Rina into the terrifying heart of her husband's murder investigations—and straight into the path of a gang of ruthless killers. To protect Rina, Decker must find his prey before death unites his two worlds.

Vanished by Joseph Finder

Debuting in 15th position is Vanished, a new series featuring Special Forces intelligence investigator Nick Heller by Joseph Finder. Nick Heller is tough, smart, and stubborn. And in his line of work, it's essential. Trained in the Special Forces, Nick is a high-powered intelligence investigator--exposing secrets that powerful people would rather keep hidden. He's a guy you don't want to mess with. He's also the man you call when you need a problem fixed. Desperate, with nowhere else to run, Nick's nephew, Gabe makes that call one night. After being attacked in Georgetown, his mother, Lauren, lies in a coma, and his step-dad, Roger, Nick's brother, has vanished without a trace. Nick and Roger have been on the outs since the arrest, trial, and conviction of their father, the notorious "fugitive financier," Victor Heller. Where Nick strayed from the path, Roger followed their father's footsteps into the corporate world. Now, as Nick searches for his brother, he's on a collision course with one of the most powerful corporations in the world--and they will stop at nothing to protect their secrets.

New Sherlock Holmes Movie Viral Website

Sherlock Holmes Movie

Warner Bros. has launched a new viral website for its upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie using only an IP address to identify it: 94.236.57.221.

It opens requesting a password, which is I-R-E-N-E (after Irene Adler, the only woman who ever impressed Sherlock Holmes). A short video follows, then the omninous statement "Do not underestimate the gravity of coming events" and a request for your e-mail address. (The Warner Bros. privacy policy is in tiny print at the bottom of the screen.)

That's all there is for now, but presumably games or puzzles will be presented in the future, and given this is Sherlock Holmes, maybe a mystery to solve. The film opens in theaters Christmas Day.

New Mystery Prize Package Giveaway! To Know Evil by Stephen Gaspar

Mystery Book Contests

is thrilled to announce a new mystery book prize package giveaway! Stephen Gaspar is giving away a prize package including his medieval mystery To Know Evil, a CD of Gregorian chant, and more!

To Know Evil by Stephen Gaspar

In the year 999, on the eve of the millennium, a mysterious evil falls upon an isolated Benedictine monastery in the north of Italy. First one, then two more monks are found dead, apparently the victims of accidents. The abbot insists on ruling them as such, despite the arguments of Brother Thomas of Worms, a respected scholar, who prides himself on his learning and reason.

It is against the Rule to question the abbot’s authority, but Brother Thomas chafes against the Rule. He values knowledge too much. A discovery of an ancient Gnostic codex by his young protégé, Brother Nicholas, has made him question his very vows. An ancient Christian sect, the Gnostics were deemed heretical, for they proclaimed knowledge as the basis of faith. To a scholar like Thomas, this is a seductive idea, especiallly when the abbot refuses to allow him to investigate what he knows to be a series of murders.

The monastery conceals a greater secret that threatens to shake the very foundation of the Roman Catholic Church. But is the Judas codex somehow linked to the killings, and if so, how?

It has been said, “There is no sin but ignorance,” but Thomas learns there is a much greater evil in the heart of one of his fellow monks. As the millennium approaches and the monks brace themselves for the final confrontation between Darkness and Light, Thomas confronts the murderer and truly begins to know evil.

Enter daily! Provide your name and e-mail address on the To Know Evil giveaway entry form and correctly answer the contest question for a chance to win a prize package that includes a copy of To Know Evil, an official To Know Evil CD of Gregorian chant, a feather quill like the one used by the main character in the book, a reproduction of a page from an medieval manuscript, a Benedictine medal and cross, and bookmarkers, courtesy of author Stephen Gaspar. Estimated prize package value: $35.

Mystery Book Review: Floodgates by Mary Anna Evans

A Faye Longchamp Mystery

ISBN-10: 1-59058-591-7 (1590585917)
ISBN-13: 978-1-59058-591-7 (9781590585917)

Review: Archaeology graduate student Faye Longchamp has her first professional opportunity to manage other archaeologists while excavating an early 19th century plantation and battlefield outside New Orleans in Floodgates, the fifth mystery in this outstanding series by Mary Anna Evans.

But it isn't what's discovered on the battlefield that shocks the team, but the body found in a nearby house that suffered damage from Hurricane Katrina. It's clear almost from the moment she is found that the dead woman didn't die as a result of the hurricane but was placed there at some point later. Faye and her fiancé Joe Wolf Mantooth are hired by the local police to assist in the investigation, which becomes even more pertinent when it's learned the woman, Shelly Brousssard, was an archaeologist herself. Faye's naturally inquisitive mind, and the questions she asks, soon make her a target as well. What secrets did someone try to hide by burying a woman amid the rubble of a hurricane?

As is typical of the books in this series, Floodgates is equal parts character study, murder mystery, and history lesson, all of which are exceptionally well presented here. Faye's character continues to develop as she balances personal and professional issues. Joe, for example, is pressing her to set a date for their wedding (she's approaching 40 and he wants to start a family as soon as possible). But she also wants to finish her graduate program and detours such as this assignment, which she readily admits she accepted more for the money than for the line item on her resume, aren't helping her achieve that goal. And though she enjoys her work, she's drawn to murder investigations when they intersect her path. The police detective who hires Faye and Joe, Jodi Bienvenu, has this wonderful observation about Faye: "This was a woman whose intuition was so engrained into her being that she didn't even know it was there. This was also a woman of an uncommonly brilliant mind, and Jodi knew that she, by comparison, was simply smart."

The author cleverly incorporates centuries-old history with years-old history in the mystery plot by outlining how the levees that protect New Orleans were originally designed and constructed and how they ultimately failed in the aftermath of Katrina. In a somewhat refreshing manner, she focuses more on what went right than what went wrong, what people did during the crisis as opposed to what people did not. That it was a catastrophe is never disputed nor is the fact that there were many who took advantage of the situation, but there were also a lot of unsung heroes who get to play a role in the book here.

Finally, another comment by Jodi on Faye that seems perfectly apt for not only this book, but the series as a whole: "That's what I like about you, Faye. You never stop being an archaeologist. You never stop digging. And you never fail to look at facts, even when you don't like them much."

Special thanks to Poisoned Pen Press for providing an ARC of Floodgates for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Legend and romance drip from the lacy balconies of New Orleans as surely as Spanish moss drips from the branches of the city's ancient oaks. In New Orleans, Faye Longchamp is happy just to get up in the morning and go to work. But centuries of tragedy shadow the city--wars, slavery, and a monumental flood that killed a thousand people and still threatens to wash all that history away.

Faye and her team of archaeologists, fighting to save New Orleans' past, are horrified when a corpse surfaces that's far too new to be an archaeological find. The police presume it's just another dead body in a long, sad sequence of dead bodies left by Hurricane Katrina, until Faye shows them a truth that only an archaeologist could see: the debris piled on top of the dead woman is all wrong. It was no flood that killed her and covered her body.

Faye knows that this is not a drowning victim whose life was snuffed out by Katrina. Someone brought the woman, dead or alive, to this flooded-out house and left her dead body behind. Presumably, that someone killed her.

Faye and her fiance Joe Wolf Mantooth are drawn into the investigation by a detective who believes their professional expertise is critical to the case. They quickly learn that trouble swirled around the victim, Shelly Broussard, like winds around the still, quiet eye of a hurricane. Does Shelly's heroic rescue work in the aftermath of Katrina the key to her death? Or does the sheaf of photos in her work files hold the answer? Will Faye and Joe be the next innocents engulfed in this deadly deception?

Games of Mystery: Still Life 2, New for PC

Games of Mystery

, your source for mystery-themed electronic and board games, parties for kids and adults, and getaway vacations including murder mystery weekends, is pleased to announce the availability of a new game for Windows PC.

Still Life 2

Still Life 2 reveals the long-awaited ending of Still Life and spells a new investigation for Agent Victoria McPherson.

Victoria is sent to Maine where Audrey Dunnigan's body has just been found. The modus operandi and the video sent to the police and press leave them in no doubt as to the killer's identity: the East Coast Killer has struck again! No clues are picked up during the autopsy, as the serial killer painstakingly washed the body. Once again, the killer has not committed any errors.

From her motel room, Victoria comes across a report by Paloma Hernandez, the journalist covering all the crimes bearing the East Coast Killer's signature. Hernandez has been highly critical of the FBI's and Victoria's lack of progress. That does not stop Hernandez from phoning and asking Victoria to meet her later that evening. Hernandez claims to have some so-called clues on the killer in her possession. Victoria flatly refuses. Just moments later, Paloma is kidnapped by the killer ...

Still Life 2 remains true to the spirit of its first installment and continues to allow gamers to play and manage two characters bound by the same fate. This time, the aim is for gamers to control two heroines, see the game from two complementary viewpoints and experience two different gameplays. Depending on whether they are playing the victim being hunted by the killer (Paloma Hernandez) or the FBI agent tracking him down (Victoria McPherson), gamers can alternate between survival and investigation.

Still Life 2 is currently scheduled for release for Windows PC platforms on August 22nd, 2009, and may be pre-ordered now.

Review: Kjell Eriksson crafts a complex tale of international drug trade, illegal aliens, single parenting, greed and murder in The Demon of Dakar, the third mystery featuring Uppsala Police Inspector Ann Littell.

Much of the story revolves around the activities of two restaurants, Alhambra and Dakar, which are owned by drug lords Slobodan Andersson and his partner Armas. But it all begins with the Alavez brothers, Manuel, Angel and Patrico, whose simple meager lives in Mexico are now in ruin. After crossing from Mexico into California and waiting for someone to hire them for the day, they are approached by two men, the “tall one” Armas and the “fat one” Slobodan Anderson. All the brothers had to do was carry a bag from one place to another–overseas. Manuel refused, but his younger brothers, especially Patrico, who was always prepared to go just a little further to see what was concealed behind the next curve, hill or street corner, jumped at the chance to make more money with less work. So it was that Angel and Patrico began their lives as international drug runners. They were told if the drugs were delivered and if they were caught, they would still be given $10,000 for their efforts. Angel was killed while trying to escape arrest in San Sebastian, Spain. Patrico was arrested at the airport between Spain and Germany and was sentenced to fifteen years in a prison in Sweden. As the oldest, Manuel felt responsible for his brothers, even though they, too, could have said “No”, but he felt he should have done something to stop them. Now, he is going to the Swedish prison to visit his young brother and get the full story of what has happened.

When an almost naked body is discovered in the local river, Inspector Ann Lindell and her brain squad are given the case. The man had been killed before entering the water by a slash across his throat. On one arm a patch of skin had been cut out. Lindell suspects that a tattoo has been removed. She cam think of only two reasons for the deletion: to make the identification more difficult or that the tattoo could be a direct link to the murderer. The dead man is finally identified as Armas, a known drug traffiker. Does his death have anything to do with Manuel Alavez who has recently arrived in Sweden? If so, why was his tattoo cut off his arm? The mystery of Armas’ life is as questionable as is his death.

The multiple stories in The Demon of Dakar are woven together with such finesse and realism that, despite the complexity of the plot, which definitely has the potential to confuse but somewhat inexplicably and agreeably doesn't, the reader is riveted to the words on pages. Little is as it seems here and just as peripheral characters are caught up in the what happens at the restaurants and the subsequent investigation of the murder, so does the reader. For those unfamiliar with Swedish police procedurals, The Demon of Dakar would serve as a terrific introduction.
