Mystery Book Review: Shooters & Chasers by Lenny Kleinfeld

Review: Lenny Kleinfeld's debut suspense novel, Shooters & Chasers, is largely a police procedural that is interspersed with elements of a comic caper, legal thriller, and yes, a little romance. Regardless of how it's defined, though, it's a pleasure to read.

Chicago cops Mark Bergman and John "Doonie" Dunegan nab a suspect in the senseless murder of a local architect. But Emilio "Meelo" Garcia insists he didn't do it. He spins a far-fetched tale of events that led to his being in the motel where he was arrested. No one believes him, and the prosecutors not only have an open-and-shut high profile case, it's a political springboard for greater things to come. But Mark and Doonie go through the motions of checking Meelo's story out and one or two details turn out to be true. That leads them to continue the investigation until they're convinced the suspect's original wildly improbable story actually may be the truth. But who'd want to kill the architect, whose design is up for consideration as the new Los Angeles Fine Arts Museum? The answers lie in southern California where the two cops find competition among the rich and famous for recognition to be deadly.

For the most part, the plot in Shooters & Chasers evolves from the perspective of the two cops, Mark and Doonie. But virtually every major character, and there are more than a few, has a point of view in the story that's replete with intersecting subplots. It is a measure of how crisply written this book is that the reader can keep them all straight. And at over 400 pages, the book is fairly long, yet doesn't feel that way. Many scenes are written from different points of view, something that's typically hard to pull off without seeming repetitive but is done exceptionally well here. The murder scheme is comically convoluted; the assassins that pull it off know it is as well, but are counting on the cops and the prosecutors to believe no one would go to such extremes when a simple bullet to the head in a dark alley would have sufficed. The narrative occasionally makes tangential detours that don't really add any value to the story, and the ending, which has screenplay written all over it (so to speak), isn't nearly as polished as it could have been. Overall though, Shooters & Chasers is a cleverly developed mystery with compelling characters that is thoroughly entertaining.

Synopsis (from the publisher): A revered architect is dead on the pavement, gunned down by an inept mugger. Homicide detectives Mark Bergman and John "Doonie" Dunegan bust the mugger, who claims he wasn't the murderer, or even the mugger -- despite being in possession of the murder weapon and the victim's wallet. The prosecutor's a closet thespian. The defense attorney is neurotically insecure and the lone defense witness is a chronic liar. The prosecution's case is unraveled by the detectives who built it. The State's attorney is up for re-election and doesn't want to hear about it. The real killers, a pair of world-class assassins hell-bent on making a world-class syrah, were hired by a Los Angeles billionaire philanthropist. But which one? While narrowing the list, Mark and Doonie end up in Southern California, neck-deep in a three-sided war with the assassins and a squad of private security goons.

Mysteries on TV: The Baron and Cracker, New on DVD This Week

Mysteries on TV

, your source for the most complete selection of detective, amateur sleuth, private investigator, and suspense television mystery series now available or coming soon to DVD, is profiling two series that have complete collection DVDs being released this week.

Steve Forrest starred as John Mannering, an international arts and antiques dealer and undercover agent for a fictional British intelligence agency, in . The adventure series, based on the books by John Creasey, was produced by ITC Entertainment (the same company that made The Saint) but lasted just one season of 30 episodes. Sue Lloyd played his assistant Cordelia Winfield.

The series shared many similarities with The Saint, with Mannering, like Simon Templar, living the life of luxury, driving expensive cars, and in the company of beautiful women. For the television series, however, several changes were made from the books on which it was based. For example, Mannering was a reformed British jewel thief in the books, but changed to the heir of a Texas cattle ranch for the series (hence the name "Baron").

The The Baron: The Complete Series DVD set of 8 discs includes all 30 episodes of the series that aired from April to June, 1966, and from October 1966 to March 1967.

was a UK crime drama series that aired on ITV1 from September 1993 through November 1995 and included 9 multi-part episodes over 3 seasons.

The series starred Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid of the Harry Potter movies) as Dr. Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald, a criminal psychologist who has the ability to "see" into the minds of the criminally disturbed (not unlike the character of Clarice in Silence of the Lambs which no doubt inspired this series.)

A remake of the series aired in the US on ABC during the 1997 / 1998 television season. It starred Robert Pastorelli (of Murphy Brown fame) as the renamed Dr. Gerry "Fitz" Fitzgerald and the then virtually unknown Josh Hartnett as his son Michael. It is also available on DVD as Cracker: The Complete US Series.

The Cracker: The Complete Collection DVD set of 3 discs includes all 9 episodes of the series plus bonus material, Cracker: Behind the Scenes, an intimate visit with the show's cast and creative team.

Mystery Book Review: The Disappearance by Efrem Sigel

Review: Efrem Sigel's suspense novel The Disappearance is more than a mystery; it's a powerful study of interpersonal relationships, what keeps them together and what tears them apart.

Nathalie and Joshua Sandler’s son, their only child, 14-year-old Daniel was absent from their home when they returned from running an errand that lasted just two hours. It was a beautiful August morning in The Hollow, a small village in the town of Smithfield, Massachusetts where the Sandler’s had their summer home. Dan’s bike was in the garage. Nothing about the house or Dan’s room was disturbed. Maybe he had met his friends to take a swim in the river. Maybe they went for a hike. Maybe. Maybe. As the hours passed Nathalie and Joshua spoke with Dan’s friends. Nathalie called the parents of the friends they could not find. Nobody in this town of about sixty people had seen or been in contact with Daniel. Joshua, along with the small town police force, questioned adults and children. Had anyone seen somebody or anything out of the ordinary on that morning between 10 AM and noon? No one had. Joshua endlessly continued his search for almost a year to find his son. Nathalie, a cellist with the New York Philharmonic, put her cello down, and took a leave of absence from the orchestra and retreated into herself. It is with heartache that Nathalie and Joshua resolve they must continue their lives.

The Disappearance is a story of love, heartbreak, and tragedy. But it also am absorbing character study. Nathalie and Joshua are outsiders in Smithfield, rich people from the city. Some members of the town board aren't totally sympathetic to their loss, believing that change (in the form of summer folk) isn't good for the community. The compassionate police chief, however, a parent like many others in the town, does everything in his power to help in the search. But the focus here is on Nathalie and Joshua. Nathalie refuses to believe Daniel may be gone, but rather than continue to hope, gives up in despair. Joshua eventually accepts the reality of their son's disappearance, but never gives up his pursuit in finding him. He understands they must try to rebuild their lives together or lead them separately and apart. The mystery of Daniel is eventually resolved, but the story here, and the reason to read the book, centers around the consequences of a child's disappearance, not the act itself.

Special thanks to guest reviewer Betty of The Betz Review for contributing her review of The Disappearance and to Author Marketing Experts for providing a copy of the book for this review.

Synopsis (from the publisher): When Joshua and Nathalie Sandler's only child, 14-year-old Daniel, disappears one flawless summer day in a tiny hamlet in western Massachusetts, their world changes in an instant. Over the next year, Joshua neglects everything else to search for their son while Nathalie, a beautiful and gifted cellist, withdraws into herself, unable to play even a note of music.

The Disappearance immerses the reader in the Sandlers' world, deftly portraying the various townspeople who might be involved in this mystery, among them a mean-spirited local town leader, half a dozen troubled teenagers, and a dark-haired, passionate young woman who is drawn to Joshua and his plight.

Mysteries on DVD Review: In the Electric Mist

Mysteries on DVD: Mystery Books that have been Adapted into Screenplays and Made into Movies

We're still in the process of setting up a new website with reviews of mystery TV shows and movies which may (or may not) have a separate blog. In the meantime, we'll continue to post our television and film reviews here on and advise you of when the new site is up.

Film: . Original release date: 03/03/2009; DVD release date: 03/03/2009.

In the Electric Mist

Dave Robicheaux (Tommy Lee Jones), Bootsie Robicheaux (Mary Steenburgen), Julie "Baby Feet" Balboni (John Goodman), Elrod Sykes (Peter Sarsgaard), Kelly Drummond (Kelly Macdonald), Rosie Gomez (Justina Machado), Twinky LeMoyne (Ned Beatty). Directed by Bertrand Tavernier. Screenplay adapted from the novel In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead by .

and . It wasn't until late 2008 that the studio announced the movie was going direct to DVD, forgoing a theatrical release entirely, raising all sorts of red flags to experienced movie watchers. With a stellar cast, and a screenplay adapted from a book written by one of America's best mystery novelists, what went wrong?

In the Electric Mist

First, a couple of disclaimers. I think Tommy Lee Jones is about the best actor working today. And though I haven't read In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead, I have read many other James Lee Burke mysteries and found them to be exceptionally well plotted and written. So I went into this movie with high expectations.

The movie opens with Dave Robicheaux, a parish detective formerly with the New Orleans Police Department, investigating two crimes. The first is the brutal murder of a young girl, found tortured in the woods. It is followed soon thereafter with the murder of another young girl, found stuffed into a barrel.

In the Electric Mist

The second is the body of a black man wrapped in chains, found in the bayou by the star of a Civil War action movie filming in the parish. The body is clearly quite old, triggering Robicheaux to remember a shooting he witnessed when he was a teenager.

Robicheaux suspects the local bad boy, "Baby Feet" Balboni, may be involved in the first case. And because Balboni is an "investor" in the movie being filmed in the parish, that links him, ever so tenuously, to the second case as well.

Robicheaux typically plays by his own rules, using as his guide a moral compass that doesn't always fall within department guidelines. He's not above physically threatening a suspect or planting evidence to smooth over the rough spots of an investigation. Some of the more powerful scenes are when Robicheaux assumes the role of a bad cop, knowing what he's doing is wrong, but doing it anyway.

In the Electric Mist

One night, Robicheaux is drugged at a party and later drives his truck into a bayou. There he meets Confederate General John Bell Hood. He knows he's hallucinating, but the General makes two more appearances later in the movie when he's under extreme stress, but clearly not hallucinating. This is the origin of the title of the film (and the book), but is also the weakest element of the movie. There is only the vaguest connection between the conversations Robicheaux has with the General and the cases he's investigating.

One would presume both investigations are closed in the end, but the resolution to one is ambiguously, or maybe just clumsily, handled. I admit I originally made the assumption the filmmaker asked me to make, but upon reflection, I'm not so certain.

The last few frames of the film are a bit silly. I don't know for sure, but I find it hard to believe Burke included the scene in his book.

In the Electric Mist (DVD cover)
Buy In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead on DVD from Amazon.com

Is In the Electric Mist a great movie? No, but it is a very good movie and one worth watching. The performances are uniformly outstanding, the direction crisp, the bayou scenes dripping with atmosphere, and the plot intricate without being confusing. The soundtrack could have, should have, added depth and character to the movie, but unfortunately is completely forgettable. It doesn't interfere, but it doesn't contribute anything either. (And I know it isn't supposed to matter one way or the other, but the DVD cover is just plain awful. File that under "what were they thinking?")

The DVD of In the Electric Mist and In the Electric Mist (Blu-ray) are available to purchase from Mysteries on DVD, your source for movies that have been adapted from mystery books.

Review written by Chris, Age 11, Grade 6. Date of review: March 2009.

Review: The Field Guide is the first out of five books in The Spiderwick Chronicles. Written by Holly Black, this book will make you grab the edges of your seat when you read about the unusual creatures and fairies that exist in their world! Jared is one of two sons in the Grace family. As the troublesome one in the family, he is always accused of accidents. Simon is the pet lover of the family and captures the most unusual creatures of our world. Mallory is the oldest of the family and the tough one. She enjoys fencing and is genuine tomboy. The Grace children live with their mother, Helen. They plan to start a new life, living in their Aunt’s abandoned mansion.

“The doors were faded gray, worn with age.” The Grace family has moved to their Great Aunt Lucinda’s mansion, which in Jared’s opinion is a bunch of shacks put together. They plan to start a new life in the country after a rough ten years in California. Soon, Jared regrets moving here. Jared begins to hear scraping on the walls of the house. A few days later, he finds that someone had tied his shoes together. That’s when he discovers The Field Guide to Fairies and Magical Beasts. Jared begins to notice more and more signs that prove mythical creatures inhabit the walls of their house. The peculiar thing is, these beasts are invisible, causing no one to believe him. Even stranger events occur the next week. The Field Guide is being stolen by an invisible force, but whom, or should it be what? Packed with mystery, excitement, and twists, The Field Guide takes mystery to a whole new limit!

The Field Guide was crammed with realistic scenes such as the Hob Goblin eating the feast of cat, bird and human leg ravenously. I could smell the seasoning on the burnt foot and the peppers on the bird. This book contains mystery, adventure, magical creatures, and makes me want to stay up late to read the final page! I would recommend The Spiderwick Chronicles for anyone who loves mythical creatures and adventure! Tony DiTerlizzi has not disappointed me with his illustrations and Holly Black made me want to purchase the whole series! The Field Guide is a New York Times best selling book and so are the rest of the Spiderwick series! Keep up the good work H.B and T.D.!

Mystery Book Review: The Little Sleep by Paul Tremblay

Mysterious Reviews, mysteries reviewed by the Hidden Staircase Mystery Books, is publishing a new review of The Little Sleep by Paul Tremblay. For our blog readers, we are printing it first here in advance of its publication on our website.

The Little Sleep by Paul Tremblay

by
A Mark Genevich Mystery

Henry Holt (Hardcover)
ISBN-10: 0-8050-8849-0 (0805088490)
ISBN-13: 978-0-8050-8849-6 (9780805088496)
Publication Date: March 2009
List Price: $14.00

Review: Paul Tremblay introduces Boston private investigator Mark Genevich, a man who suffers from an extreme form of narcolepsy, in The Little Sleep, a hard-boiled mystery written in a noir-ish style.

Genevich's latest client is the daughter of the Boston District Attorney, and also a finalist on the hit reality series American Star. At least he thinks she is. His client, that is. He knows she's been on television as he's seen the show. He has suggestive pictures of his client that may be part of a blackmail scheme or worse. Or so he believes. Coming to the conclusion that he's not quite sure who his client is or how he got the photos or even what the photos mean, Genevich pursues his investigation not knowing how it will end, or even knowing how it began.

The plot of The Little Sleep is more than a little bit derivative, but the author handles it well, constructing a nicely paced narrative that offers plenty of clues leading to a denouement that is rewarding, if not exactly surprising. This, in and of itself, would have been sufficient to recommend the book if not for two major problems.

The first is The Little Sleep is written in the present tense, seldom an appropriate choice for a mystery. And it really doesn't work here. Genevich narrates the story, but drifts between his conscious and unconscious states, leaving the reader unclear whether what's happening is real or imagined. No doubt this is intended to add an element of suspense to his tale, but it has an overly contrived feel to it.

The second is the character of Mark Genevich. He has a disability, as is made clear in the opening chapters, and feels sorry for himself. Rarely an endearing quality to readers. But it also isn't necessary to remind the reader in every subsequent chapter what narcolepsy is, what its symptoms are, how it manifests itself, how Genevich suffers from it, the consequences of its occurrence, and so on. At a pivotal point in the story when it does come into play, the impact is considerably lessened because the reader is simply numbed by the repetitiveness of its reference.

The Little Sleep is, in the end, rather disappointing. A well-crafted story overwhelmed by character and voice.

Synopsis (from the publisher): Mark Genevich is a South P.I. with a little problem: he’s narcoleptic, and he suffers from the most severe symptoms, including hypnogogic hallucinations. These waking dreams wreak havoc for a guy who depends on real-life clues to make his living.

Clients haven’t exactly been beating down the door when Mark meets Jennifer Times -- daughter of the powerful local D.A. and a contestant on American Star -- who walks into his office with an outlandish story about a man who stole her fingers. He awakes from his latest hallucination alone, but on his desk is a manila envelope containing risqué photos of Jennifer. Are the pictures real, and if so, is Mark hunting a blackmailer, or worse?
