Mysteries on TV: The Baron and Cracker, New on DVD This Week

Mysteries on TV

, your source for the most complete selection of detective, amateur sleuth, private investigator, and suspense television mystery series now available or coming soon to DVD, is profiling two series that have complete collection DVDs being released this week.

Steve Forrest starred as John Mannering, an international arts and antiques dealer and undercover agent for a fictional British intelligence agency, in . The adventure series, based on the books by John Creasey, was produced by ITC Entertainment (the same company that made The Saint) but lasted just one season of 30 episodes. Sue Lloyd played his assistant Cordelia Winfield.

The series shared many similarities with The Saint, with Mannering, like Simon Templar, living the life of luxury, driving expensive cars, and in the company of beautiful women. For the television series, however, several changes were made from the books on which it was based. For example, Mannering was a reformed British jewel thief in the books, but changed to the heir of a Texas cattle ranch for the series (hence the name "Baron").

The The Baron: The Complete Series DVD set of 8 discs includes all 30 episodes of the series that aired from April to June, 1966, and from October 1966 to March 1967.

was a UK crime drama series that aired on ITV1 from September 1993 through November 1995 and included 9 multi-part episodes over 3 seasons.

The series starred Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid of the Harry Potter movies) as Dr. Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald, a criminal psychologist who has the ability to "see" into the minds of the criminally disturbed (not unlike the character of Clarice in Silence of the Lambs which no doubt inspired this series.)

A remake of the series aired in the US on ABC during the 1997 / 1998 television season. It starred Robert Pastorelli (of Murphy Brown fame) as the renamed Dr. Gerry "Fitz" Fitzgerald and the then virtually unknown Josh Hartnett as his son Michael. It is also available on DVD as Cracker: The Complete US Series.

The Cracker: The Complete Collection DVD set of 3 discs includes all 9 episodes of the series plus bonus material, Cracker: Behind the Scenes, an intimate visit with the show's cast and creative team.
