Sherlock (BBC)

"We all have a past. Ghosts. They are the shadows that define our every sunny day …"

BBC has announced that production on the fourth season of Sherlock has begun. The first of three episodes begins with the mercurial Holmes back once more on British soil, as Doctor Watson and his wife, Mary, prepare for their biggest ever challenge — becoming parents for the first time.

"[I am] genuinely thrilled to be back filming Sherlock with all the cast and crew," said Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Sherlock Holmes. "I can't wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait... though not for long... And it will be worth it."

"Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake," added co-creators, writers and executive producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. "This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax …" (Some have interpreted this statement to imply that the fourth season may be its last for the series. We hope not!)

No premiere date was announced, but early January 2017 would be a good guess.
