Stranded one night on a lonely back road in the California desert, Lucas Tunney sees something that shakes him to his core. Was it simply a halucination brought on by exhaustion and stress or … did he see a ghost? Although no other explanation seems possible he manages to convince himself that things like that just don't happen in the real world.

After he's rescued by an accommodating local, Lucas accepts an offer of employment in the nearby town of Cutter's Grove. For awhile his existence in this sleepy little burg lacks much in the way of excitement but that changes quickly when he's told about the mysterious disappearance of a young girl that took place a year earlier. When shown her picture, Lucas is forced to confront the fact that his experience in the desert was, indeed, real.

But going to the authorities about what he's seen is out of the question; he'll sound like a lunatic if he starts expounding on the existence of supernatural entities. As unappealing as the notion is, it doesn't seem that he has much choice; he has to try to learn how this child was killed and, in the process, learn who might have been responsible.

His search for answers will leave Lucas questioning everything he thought he knew, and will forever change his life.
