Acorn Productions announced today that ITV has commissioned three additional feature length (120 minute) episodes of Foyle's War.
The ninth series — eighth season in the US — will see Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) immersed in the dangerous world of espionage as a Senior Intelligence Officer for MI5 during a time when political and foreign governmental relationships were delicately balanced. Episode storylines will be based on real events in the early days of the Cold War.
"[Series creator] Anthony Horowitz has written three outstanding episodes and the audience are in for a real treat," said Jane Hudson, ITV's Head of Drama Series. "This series also gives us the chance to take the shoot to one of the jewels of the North West, Liverpool."
Production is expected to begin in Liverpool (substituting for post-war London) in January 2014 with the episodes to air in both the UK and US in 2015.
