Telemystery: ITV Orders Adaptation of James Runcie's Sidney Chambers and The Shadow of Death

Telemystery: Mystery and Suspense on Television

ITV has annonced that it has commissioned a 6-part drama titled Grantchester, based on a character created by James Runcie and introduced last year in Sidney Chamgers and the Shadow of Death (more about the book, below).

Set against the backdrop of the real hamlet of Grantchester and written by Daisy Coulam, the storyline is centered on the life of Sidney Chambers, a charismatic, charming clergyman, who turns investigative vicar when one of his parishioners dies in suspicious circumstances.

"Grantchester is an exciting commission for ITV Drama and we're delighted to be working with Diederick Santer,” said ITV's Director of Drama Steve November. "Daisy Coulam's scripts are vivid and beautifully written with some wonderful characters at the heart of the stories. There's an emotional truth and gravity to this series which makes it a very compelling drama."

Filming is expected to begin in March 2014. No casting information was announced.

A Canon Sidney Chambers, Grantchester Mystery

Sidney Chambers, the Vicar of Grantchester and Honorary Canon of Ely Cathedral, is a thirty-two year old bachelor. Tall, with dark brown hair, eyes the colour of hazelnuts and a reassuringly gentle manner, Sidney is an unconventional clergyman and can go where the police cannot.

In this first outing, Sidney, together with his roguish friend Inspector Horatio "Harry" Keating, must enquire into the suspect suicide of a Cambridge solicitor, a scandalous jewellery theft at a New Year's Eve dinner party, the unexplained death of a well-known jazz promoter and a shocking art forgery the disclosure of which puts a close friend in danger.

Sidney discovers that being a detective, like being a clergyman, means that you are never off duty, but alongside the mysteries he solves he manages to find time for a keen interest in cricket, warm beer and hot jazz, and the works of Tolstoy and Shakespeare — as well as a curious fondness for a German widow three years his junior.
