Cinemystery: Adaptation of The Keeper of Lost Causes Likely to be Most Popular Film of 2013 in Denmark

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

TrustNordisk reported today that the film adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen's The Keeper of Lost Causes (Danish title: Kvinden i buret), just released in Denmark earlier this month, is on track to become the country's most popular movie in 2013.

Kvinden i buret (2013)

Directed by Mikkel Nørgaard from an adapted screenplay by Nikolaj Arcel, the storyline is centered chief detective Carl Mørck (Nikolaj Lie Kaas) and his assistant Assad (Fares Fares) who become involved in a five-year-old case concerning the mystery of politician Merete Lynggaard's disappearance — a journey that takes them deep into the undercurrent of abuse and malice that lurks beneath the polished surface of Scandinavia.

Though the film has been sold to more than 35 countries, there is no US distributor yet for the movie, though discussions are reportedly underway.

Four films are planned featuring these characters, based on the first four books in the series. The second, adapted from The Absent One, is currently in production and set for a Fall 2014 release.

A Carl Mørck, Department Q Mystery

Read our review of The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen.

Carl Mørck used to be a good homicide detective — one of Copenhagen's best. Then a bullet almost took his life. Two of his colleagues weren't so lucky, and Carl, who didn't draw his weapon, blames himself.

So a promotion is the last thing Carl expects.

But it all becomes clear when he sees his new office in the basement. Carl's been selected to run Department Q, a new special investigations division that turns out to be a department of one. With a stack of Copenhagen's coldest cases to keep him company, Carl's been put out to pasture. So he's as surprised as anyone when a case actually captures his interest. A missing politician vanished without a trace five years earlier. The world assumes she's dead. His colleagues snicker about the time he's wasting. But Carl may have the last laugh, and redeem himself in the process.

Because she isn't dead … yet.

  1. I'm a big fan of Swedish writers, Henning Mankell is known as the most popular internationally famous living mystery writer. I've read every book because he is a fine story teller. I also study him. I'm very interested in the above books coming from that part of the world for that reason. I will read them. I have to mention that the Swedish writer, Stieg Larsson, has been a favorite of mine as well.

    1. I've enjoyed some of the recently translated Nordic authors, but many I find hit or miss. It seems that far too much time is often spent on the characters' personal issues, something I find detracting in a mystery or thriller.
