Beck: Episodes 19-21

Beck
Episodes 19-21

He's got no style, he's got no flash and he's squarely in middle age. But Swedish detective Martin Beck (Peter Haber) is good at one thing: methodically catching criminals so that they can be put away … for a long time. His tightly-wound partner, Gunvald Larsson (Mikael Persbrandt), is his opposite: an impulsive man who cuts a dashing figure, is in no way politically correct and who never met a boundary he didn't leap across. He ll do anything to get information from a suspect, including enhanced interrogation techniques.

It's classic good cop/bad cop, and together with their team they bring down dangerous criminals lurking in the seedy Stockholm underworld.

Beck's a loner but he's not anti-social. He regularly sees his daughter, with whom he now has a much better relationship than when he was neglecting her growing up. And at the end of a workday, there's always an interesting conversation and a nightcap with a neighbor who gives new meaning to the word quirky.

These DVD sets, in Swedish with English subtitles, originally aired in 2007.

Episodes 19-21 are "The Vulture", "The Attorney", and "The Japanese Painting".

Inspector Lewis: Series Six

Inspector Lewis
Series Six

Inspector Robbie Lewis (Kevin Whately) and Sergeant James Hathaway (Laurence Fox) face three new mysteries inspired by the "Inspector Morse" novels of Colin Dexter.

In "Down Among the Fearful", Reuben Beatty, a research fellow from Oxford's Department of Psychology, is found dead in the offices of psychic Randolph James. Lewis and Hathaway soon discover that Reuben had been leading an elaborate double life, moonlighting as a clairvoyant. Can a fellow psychic help solve the investigation?

In "The Ramblin' Boy", while Hathaway takes time off in Kosovo, Lewis is assigned a temporary sidekick, young constable Alex Gray. Together, Lewis and Gray investigate the discovery of an embalmed body of a man who died of cancer. However, the crematorium confirms that a body was burned, leaving Lewis with one question — who was buried in the coffin?

Finally, in "Intelligent Design", recently released from prison after killing someone in a driving accident, Richard Seager, a former biochemistry professor, is murdered — crushed to death by his own car. Between Seager's wife, his victim's family, and his colleagues at the university, Lewis and Hathaway have a long road to travel and a great deal to investigate.

These episodes originally aired PBS's Masterpiece Mystery! during Summer 2012.

Jack Taylor: Series One

Jack Taylor
Series One

Self-destructive, pigheaded, and overfond of the bottle, Jack Taylor (Iain Glen) is a forty-something ex-cop trying to earn a living as a private detective in his native Galway. Taylor has burned a lot of bridges, but he still has a knack for uncovering ugly truths. In his new trade, Taylor finds evil at every turn: the serial murders of young female factory workers, a vicious vigilante group executing summary justice, and a sadistic nun dubbed "Lucifer" by her former charges.

Set against the rugged backdrop of western Ireland, this crime noir series depicts a country in transition, caught between the certainties of the past and the anxieties of a post-bubble future. Those same strains play out in the life of Jack Taylor, a man seeking to reinvent himself in a community with a long memory and an uneasy attitude towards change.

This crime drama is based on a character created by Ken Bruen, with the three episodes in this set adapted from the books in the series.
