Telemystery: BBC One Commissions Second Season of Shetland

Telemystery Prime Time Crime: Mystery and Suspense on Television

BBC One has commissioned a second series (season) of Shetland, based on the Jimmy Perez mysteries by Ann Cleeves. Douglas Henshall stars as the Scottish detective.

The first season consisted of a two-part adaptation of the third book of the series, Red Bones, and aired on BBC One last month. The second season will be expanded to three two-part episodes, adapted from three more books in the series: Raven Black, Dead Water, and Blue Lightning.

"I'm thrilled by the terrific response we've had to Shetland," said Elaine Collins, Executive Producer at ITV Studios, which is producing the drama. "The Scottish landscape is one of the most beautiful places on Earth and I'm delighted to be given the opportunity to work again with Douglas Henshall and the team on Ann Cleeves' wonderful Shetland stories."

Cleeves originally envisioned the Shetland mysteries to be a quartet of novels, each set during a different season of the year. She has since written a fifth in the series, Dead Water, which was published this past January in the UK and is not yet available here in the US.
