Cinemystery: TWC Acquires US Film Rights to Sci-Fi Thriller, Snow Piercer

Cinemystery: Crime Novels Adapted for Film

The Weinstein Company has acquired the US distribution rights to Snow Piercer, a sci-fi thriller adapted from the French graphic novel Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette.

Directed by Bong Joon-ho (of South Korea) and co-written by Bong and Kelly Masterson, the film stars Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Alison Pill, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, Song Kang-ho and Ed Harris. Filmed earlier this year in the Czech Republic, it marks Bong's English-language debut.

Transperceneige was first serialized in 1983 in the magazine À Suivre, and published as a single volume in 1984 by Casterman. Casterman re-released the graphic novel in 2000 when two sequels were written (by Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette).

The storyline tells of a massive train, a thousand cars long, on which the last people of civilization ride after the world has been buried in snow. The train, which simply circles the globe, runs on a limitless power source ensuring the survival of its passengers. Over time, however, this closed world begins to separate into social and economic classes, the haves at the front and the have-nots at the rear. A man named Proloff begins a journey from his place at the back, moving forward, trying to understand how this all came about.

Snow Piercer is expected to open in US theaters Summer 2013.
