The Big Sin by Jack Webb

The Big Sin
Jack Webb
Publisher: Prologue Books

First published in 1952, this book introduces Catholic priest Father Joseph Shanley and his Jewish friend Samuel "Sammy" Golden.

The police called the death of Rose Alyce, the gorgeous nightclub showgirl, suicide. But despite the evidence — the gun by her side, the powder burns on her temple, the despairing, unfinished note — Father Shanley refused to believe that Rose had killed herself. Rose had been one of his parishioners and a good Catholic and the young priest knew she would never have committed the big sin.

Convincing tough young Detective Sergeant Samuel Golden was another matter. The case was officially closed and certain important figures in the city government wanted it to stay that way. But Father Shanley was determined — and persuasive. And Sergeant Golden found himself disobeying orders and investigating on his own — hunted by his fellow cops and threatened by a hired killer.

He also found enough evidence to convince him that the priest was right when he called Rose's death murder. And in the end Father Shanley's "act of faith" proves to be a powerful explosive that blows the lid off a whole corrupt city administration.
