Linda Fairstein served as head of the sex crimes unit of the Manhattan District Attorney's office from 1976 until 2002. It was during her tenure that she drew upon her own experience and wrote her first "Alex Cooper" mystery, Final Jeopardy, featuring a character whose profession, knowledge and expertise of the field is much like that of her own.

In 2001, Final Jeopardy was adapted into a made-for-television movie that aired on ABC, starring Dana Delany as Alexandra Cooper.
