Ridley Scott to Direct New Blade Runner Film

Blade Runner (1982)

Earlier this year we reported that Alcon Entertainment had acquired the film and television rights to the 1982 film Blade Runner. Now we're learning that that film's director, Ridley Scott, will also direct its prequel/sequel. (No one is saying whether the intended film will take place before or after the events in the original. But it is clear that the rights acquired do not include a remake.)

Blade Runner is adapted — very loosely — from the Philip K. Dick novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and stars Harrison Ford as bounty hunter Rick Deckard, who must track down four replicants, robots that are visually identical to humans and that work exclusively in off-world colonies, which have escaped and are hiding in Los Angeles.

  1. Could be truly awesome, as the original movie and director's cut were. Or, could be disastrous -- will Mr. Scott be able to approach it with a fresh eye?

  2. In an article on today'a Los Angeles Times (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2011/08/blade-runner-ridley-scott-directing-harrison-ford-star-prequel-sequel.html), Alcon Entertainment producer Andrew Kosove added these details: Production to begin in 2013, with a release expected in 2014 ("fast by big-budget Hollywood standards") and no role for Harrison Ford. "[I]f you're asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention, and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting."
