The first hour or so of this film, adapted from the young adult thriller of the same title by the pseudonymous Pittacus Lore, is largely character- and plot-driven. But Alex Pettyfer's dreadful performance as the titular Number Four and a rather poorly executed series of action scenes towards the end mar what could have otherwise been a pretty decent film.
