Jennifer Lawrence Expected to be Offered Role of Katniss in The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

We've been eagerly following the production news surrounding the upcoming film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' young adult thriller The Hunger Games. With the film scheduled to be released in just over a year, the focus recently has been on casting the leads, in particular that of series character Katniss Everdeen.

Last night Variety reported that Jennifer Lawrence will be offered the role, and is expected to sign on this coming week. Though Lawrence is a few years older than the character, we think she's an ideal choice, having proven in Winter's Bone that she can credibly play a teenager with outsized responsibilities.

The Hunger Games, the first of three books in the series (the other two are Catching Fire and Mockingjay), introduces Katniss as a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called "The Hunger Games." The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When her sister is chosen by lottery, Katniss steps up to go in her place.

Gary Ross will direct a screenplay adapted by Collins and Billy Ray.
