ComingSoon.net reports on a press conference today in which producer Mace Neufeld confirmed some of the details surrounding the next Jack Ryan thriller, based on a character created by Tom Clancy.
Chris Pine is set to star as Jack Ryan, the fourth actor to do so. (Alec Baldwin played the character in The Hunt for Red October (1990), Harrison Ford in Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994), and most recently Ben Affleck in The Sum of All Fears (2002).) The as yet untitled film will be based on an original screenplay, and not one of Clancy's novels.
"We pick him up when he's on Wall Street," says Neufeld, "...[but] the Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They're kind of 'thinking man's thrillers.' Jack is referred to as a 'water-walker' because of his ability to jump ahead to conclusions. That's very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that's how we want to portray him. He's a teacher. He's a historian. He's a linguist. And he's really smart."
