The Box, based on the Short Story Button, Button by Richard Matheson, Opens Tomorrow

Button, Button by Richard Matheson

The Box, a thriller based on a short story by Richard Matheson, opens tomorrow, Friday November 6th.

In The Box, a mysterious man (played by Frank Langella) presents a wooden box with a button to a couple (Cameron Diaz, James Marsden) which, when pressed, does two things: the couple will receive $1 million and someone, somewhere in the world will be killed. The couple has 24 hours to decide whether or not to push the button.

Button, Button was first published in Playboy in 1970, and later adapted as an episode for the television series The Twilight Zone in 1986.

The film has been heavily promoted on television, but if you haven't seen the commercials, you can watch the trailer below:

  1. This movie was aweful. It was pointless, and although the actors did well the story had nothing. There wasn't a time in the story when you could say, Oh ! I get it....Terrible..Waste of money...and i love movies.

  2. I loved the movie... it made a lot of sense about how humans are & what they may do if they had to make a choice like that! If you thought it was terrible maybe you need to study a little sociology & philosophy...

  3. I agree with aaron_appler. The movie was very interesting, creepy, funny, suspenseful....it was every genre in one. I heard of the short story about 4 years ago, and also saw a twilight zone episode, in which the movie was based on both of them. I was VERY excited when i heard of the movie comming out. I definately recomend the movie!!!

  5. I think the author wants us to decide what the symbolism is about, in the water and lightening. Maybe judgment, maybe rebirth, different choices that all people make whether consciously or subconsciously. Is God in control, is He vengeful,do we need to repent. Why are some people used as messengers or vehicles to share the message of eternity, are they God sent, or are they delusional and charismatic and we will fall for anything where greed is brought into play. I thought it was all very entertaining, thought provoking, without getting too profound, suspensefully adapted for the screen, acting was well done.

  6. The symbolism was confusing, but what i think they were trying to get to was creatinn. Mr. Steward was either the anti-crist, or god. Norma representing Eve biting the apple/ pushing the button. Arthur being adam, and Walter being Jesus Christ, because if norma didn't pay the conciquence, innocent walter would have had to pay it, just like jesus christ.
